match report:
NEW ZEALAND has won its first match of the competition with a convincing win against Sweden. The Kiwis came out with a strong game plan, and executed it well, after a disappointing loss to Ethiopia yesterday.
The scores at the end of the match were 12-5, with New Zealand celebrating the substantial winning margin.
After beginning the game with the traditional Haka, New Zealand put pressure on the Swedes early with a powerful goal in the first few minutes. Sweden attacked quickly claiming a goal for themselves, the teams then went goal for goal with New Zealand taking another goal, answered by an equaliser for Sweden. New Zealand then reopened a lead, but again Sweden came back with another goal.
After falling behind again, Sweden replied with their third and fourth goals.
New Zealand refused to let the game get away from them and scored yet another goal, leaving the Swedish goalie looking overwhelmed. This was not helped as the Kiwis grabbed another goal in the dying seconds of the first half.
With the scoreboard 7-4 in favour of NZ at half time, Sweden had a bit of work to do to get back in the game. Unfortunately for them, New Zealand quickly reasserted their dominance by grabbing another couple of goals. At this point Sweden was struggling to keep possession at all, and Sweden began to lose cohesion.
New Zealand capitalised, their striker scoring two goals in quick succession. Sweden then rallied to put in a fantastic last ditch effort, scoring the final goal of the game, but unfortunately it was not enough to take victory from the Kiwis.

New Zealand's team at the Melbourne 2008 Homeless World Cup are growing into their new roles as sporting and social ambassadors. In the space of a couple of days they've met players, coaches and other representatives from over 50 countries around the world- playing games, sharing meals and building strong friendships.
Already it's shaping up to be the greatest tournament on earth. Ever since the colourful opening parade that brought central Melbourne to a standstill, Australia has realised something very special is happening right here on their doorstep. Games have been played to packed houses from morning to evening in Federation Square and Birrarung Marr. At a tournament that usually builds by word of mouth across the course of a week, to have no empty seats in the stand and long queues outside the venues this early on is unusual. The quality of the football so far has been nothing short of awe-inspiring with high-tempo games, silky skills and goals galore.
Team NZ started with a haka and built a two goal lead before losing
8-3 to the Ethiopians on Day One. Today though the mood in the camp changed dramatically as the team ran away to a stunning 12-5 victory gainst Sweden. Sadly for the Swedes, they didn't know what had hit them as a much more self-confident kiwi team took to the field. The goals were raining in from all angles, with John Love, Ivan Onek, Everitt Johnson and Hunia Norman Tepu all getting on the scoresheet.
Goalkeeper Anthony Bradshaw and outfield players Marcel Coe and Barry Conlon also put in a good games in what was an outstanding all round team performance. Unfortunately, sweeper Wayne Riggs has picked up an ankle injury in training that's kept him out of the tournament so far.
The second game of the day was a less positive 9-3 defeat to Hungary, with a little bit of tiredness and a few niggling injuries beginning to tell. Marcel Coe got his first goal of the tournament, and after a brief post-mortem the team were able to dust themselves down and learn a few tactical lessons from their defeat. Tomorrow there's the small matter of England and Poland.
In the meantime, the team are gearing up for Open Mike night at the players centre, and hopefully a bit of beat-box from Anthony Bradshaw.

England has thrashed New Zealand today in an aggressive match, winning easily at 14-2.
It was clear from the beginning of the game that New Zealand had a lot of work to do with England scoring 6 goals in the first 4 minutes of the game, despite great work from the New Zealand goalkeeper Anthony Bradshaw.
Barry Conlon pushed through the English defence scoring a great goal for New Zealand. After another goal for England, goalkeeper Bradshaw hit the ground and stayed there stopping the game for several minutes. The injury forced him out of the game, but in a great show of strength he refused a stretcher off the field.
England managed two more goals before the half time whistle.
In the second half, New Zealand meant business, taking a goal within the first forty seconds. The game became fierce and an English player had to leave the field after suffering a heavy blow. English player Dominic Holver was then warned for becoming too physical, although it did not stop the force of the team who scored another 5 goals to take out the match.
New Zealand was not disheartened by their convincing defeat, with John Love performing a dance for the excited crowd after the full time whistle.
England is now in second position within their group, and will move through into section one of the secondary group matches.

MELBOURNE 2008 HOMELESS WORLD CUP HITS HALF-WAY MARK AS TEAMS AND CROWDS TURN UP THE VOLUME
The Melbourne 2008 Homeless World Cup hit the half-way mark today as
teams embarked on stage two of the tournament on the way to the finals
on Sunday.
Team Afghanistan put themselves firmly in contention for the final after
coming from 1-5 behind to beat powerhouse Russia 7-6.
Revelling in the support of a huge group of local Afghani supporters,
Afghanistan also beat Germany 9-8, taking a clear lead in their group.
Radio personalities Hamish and Andy showed their support for this unique
event, acting up as special guest commentators at the Fed Square
stadium, and hitting the pitch for a penalty shoot out with kids from
the crowd.
New St. Kilda AFL draftee Colm Begley also made a guest appearance at
the event, catching up with fellow Irishman in the Irish Homeless World
Cup team. Team member Paul Farrell, 22, from Dublin, was presented with
a St. Kilda guernsey and was taught how to take a "speccie", while other
players practiced kicking the unfamiliar AFL ball.
"What an amazing bunch of guys," Begley said. "I'll definitely be back
on the weekend to watch them play and hopefully see them win."
After finishing the preliminary round unbeaten in five matches, Portugal
posted its first loss of the tournament against Kenya in a penalty
shootout.
Crowds were treated to a feast of goal celebration dances by the
Zimbabwean team as they beat the Netherlands 13-2 at Fed Square stadium.
It was another day of packed crowds at Federation Square and Birrarung
Marr, with horns and flags announcing the arrival of the Norwegian
contingent, Polish matches a sea of red and white and the Cameroon
women's team braiding
The Australian Street Socceroos had their work cut out for them today
after drawing a strong group, including reigning champions Scotland,
Poland, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa.
Despite some great plays, they went down 3-7 to South Africa, 2-7 to
Ghana and 3-10 to Nigeria, putting the pressure on for their remaining
matches in this group.

New Zealand (6) v (3) Cambodia
By Tom Lyons
New Zealand recorded their first win of the second stage today, defeating Cambodia 6-3.
John Love continued his good form, slotting the first goal within seconds and scoring his second after two minutes.
Holding possession well and making the Cambodian defence work hard, New Zealand was content to hold on to their two goal advantage.
Cambodias first goal came courtesy of a penalty. Yannte judged the shot like a pro posting the ball in the top corner. New Zealand received a penalty just before half time, but was unable to add to their tally.
New Zealand started the second half in a flurry with Ivan Onek putting the lead out to two goals. Cambodia replied immediately, sneaking one past the Kiwi goalkeeper to make it 4-2.
Impressive team work and deft skills from Yannte and Nhanh put Cambodia back into the contest. But New Zealand remained focused, with John Love creating problems for the opposition.
Love was unable to consolidate the Kiwi lead and Cambodia scored again with a minute left in the match.
Last minute desperation from the Kiwis resulted in another goal to Onek, to put the game beyond doubt.
Johnny Love topped off his good work all day with his third on the final whistle to seal their 6-3 victory.
