A general football question for some research i am doing.
in a Aussie WC qualifier (v Uruguay) i think there was a banner that simply said Iran,
obviously a refercne to aprevious game where they had choked- does anyone remember any more details, like who held the banner (home fans? and was it succesful in psyching them out?

World Cup 98 Oceania/Asia playoff. They drew 1-1 in Tehran and were 2-0 up with 15 to go at home. Some bloke ran on the field and cut the net up. Had a fair delay repairing it. They restart play and concede 2 late goals to draw 2-2. Lose on away goals. Johnny Warren cried.
That's all i know about 'Iran'.

Three for me, and two for them.

Great, thanks - thats the back ground to the banner- now i just need to know about the banner itself, mainly what game and was it:
- Uruguay fans getting up there noses
- All Whites fans getting up there noses
- Socceroo fans providing a cautionary reminder
Anyone else out there with a long memory?

The question is, which Uruguay game are you talking about?
Australia played in WC qualifying process in 2001 (won 1-0 at home, lost 3-0 in Montevideo), and also in 2005 (both teams winning 1-0 at home, Australia won the penalty shootout). They also played a friendly last year, which Uruguay won 1-0.
I think you're probably referring to the game in Sydney from 2005, since I don't think the other were on TV. Can't remember the banner itself though...

The 2001 game was on TV i think EG. I remember seeing Muscat score a late pen to sew up the win.
