Getting excited about (South) Korea. Good couple of wins recently against Japan and Ivory Coast. Will have decent chance against Greece and Nigeria at least.

Korea looking like they'll be the best of the Asian teams (including Aussie).

Agree.

But still think they won't have enough to get through to the second round.

sadly for them  they must face Obafemi Martins
hence progress looks remote

Nah.  He's getting really old now (32 not 25 as he claims).

Also he's from Cameroon.

From the stands of SJP a few years ago (before it got changed to Del Boy @ SJP):

Oba-Obafem,
Oba-Obafem,
Oba-Obafem, Obafmei Martins

21 or 28,
21 or 28,
21 or 28, Obafemi Martins

(discrepencies surfaced about his age and nationality)

Squad from soccernet.com http://soccernet.espn.go.com/world-cup/story/_/id/791624/ce/uk/?cc=3436&ver=global:

South Korea squad:

Goalkeepers: Kim Young-kwang (Ulsan), Lee Woon-jae (Suwon), Jung Sung-ryong (Seongnam)

Defenders: Kim Dong-jin (Ulsan), Kim Hyung-il (Pohang), Oh Beom-seok (Ulsan), Lee Young-pyo (Al Hilal, Saudi Arabia), Lee Jung-soo (Kashima, Japan), Cha Doo-ri (Freiburg, Germany) Cho Yong-hyung (Jeju), Kang Min-soo (Suwon)

Midfielders: Ki Sung-yong (Celtic, Scotland), Kim Bo-kyung (Oita, Japan), Kim Nam-il (Tomsk, Russia), Kim Jae-sung (Pohang), Kim Jung-woo (Gwangju), Lee Chung-yong (Bolton, England), Park Ji-sung (Manchester United, England)

Forwards: Park Chu-young (Monaco, France), Ahn Jung-hwan (Dalian, China), Lee Seung-ryul (Seoul), Yeom Ki-hun (Suwon), Lee Dong-gook (Jeonbuk).

Don't really know much about the team but I note that Ahn still makes it after all these years.

no problems with Oba's age
simply a clerical error

same defence may used by one H. Redknapp later this year

Is Kim last name or first name in Korea?

There seems to be an awful lot of them in that squad...

Kim is a surname (one of the most common in Korea)

Koreans, Japanese and chinese always put family name first.

In Chinese Kim = Jin = ?

Edit: So my surname is Junior and my personal name is 82.

Well, about a quarter of the population are.

Gold is the equivalent of Smith I guess...

(In China Jin is not a very common surname, Wang - meaning King is one of the most common. Junior is very, very rare)

Correct. This is the derivation of the name. Actual word for gold is Geum I think.  Not so good with the hanja or or chinese characters.

Kim also means seaweed, like what you wrap a sushi roll in, but probably a different character.

Jun82 I do remember reading the reason for this- but I gave the book away, so can't go look it up unfortunately.

If I happen to spot a copy in the next 5-6 months I'll drop back by the thread to enlighten.

Korean names are a bit strange tbh.  I once taught a kid whose given name translated to "Blue Dragon".

And romanizing Korean names can be hilarious too.

Nothing wrong with your Korean signature Stevo!

Anyway, as I've said I don't really know too much about the squad but hope they do well and get through to the 2nd round.

Tenuously related: Went to the Womens U17 World Cup quarter finals between North Korea and Denmark and really enjoyed the game (both sides were good but the Nth Koreans were amazing). Heaps of Danish supporters but the handful of Koreans (I'm thinking were Sth Koreans) out chanted them throughout the match.

In Asia you can't beat the Korean supporters for passion and noise (see 2002 WC).

Spain beating Korea 1-0 yesterday. Easily it seems

Lee Young-pyo (ex Spurs) started, Park Ji-sung rested as a sub (not used).
