Latest on MLS labour disputeIt's a fairly good write-up, although some of the editorialising seems to have been written on Mars. Such as:
for the rest of America, the thinking surely goes something like this:Lockout? Strike? In pro soccer? And in this economic climate? These guys can't be serious.
Needless to say, for the rest of America, strikes and lockouts are very much part of the economic climate! Note also the remarks about sinister 'outside interests' and the efforts to keep them out by holding secret talks. (That's a long established code for the union negotiating behind the backs of its membership.)
It should be stated firmly that the players' are perfectly entitled to employ their right to strike in pursuit of a fair contract. The financial situation of MLS is entirely the responsibility of its owners and directors - that is to say, the people who have made the decisions about its development. If the heads of MLS continue to issue the threat of the game failing, the players ought to respond by saying, "Well, then, let us organise the League!"
