what the hell is up with this wild card stuff in the play offs?

Top three in each conference at the end of the season gets automatic qualification to the playoffs. The remaining four spots in the playoffs are selected from the league-wide standings. These are the "wildcard" spots.

So even if you come last in your table there is a chance you can progress to the final and win the whole thing?

Would be incredibly unlikely, but possible.

Nope. Lowest you could come is seventh in your conference. It's the best three in each conference, then the best four in the entire league not already qualified regardless of conference.

Example: Last year it was an eight-team playoffs with 2 per confenerence + 4 wildcards. NY and Columbus (51 and 50 pts) qualified through the East conference spots, LA and Salt Lake (59 and 56 pts) through the West conference. The remaining four wildcard spots went to Dallas, Seattle, Colorado and San Jose (50, 48, 46, 46). All four are from the West, and finished above the next highest East team (Kansas City, 39).

Where it gets weird is that it would've been possible for the second placed East team to earn less points than the 7th place West team. yet still qualify ahead of them.

Right I got it, so one conference could potentially have more teams in the play offs compared with the other?

i.e 4 from east and 6 from west?

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

NFL star to trial for soccer team

Wide receiver Chad Ochocinco is using the NFL lockout to see if he can play for Major League Soccer side Kansas City.

Never short on publicity-grabbing ideas, the Cincinnati Bengals player was set for a four-day trial starting on Tuesday.

The club said on Wednesday that after the tryout, it will determine whether to extend the trial.

"We're always searching for players who can help our team and bringing in new talent," Kansas City manager Peter Vermes said. "We know that Chad is an exceptional athlete and that he loves the sport of soccer, and he did play a lot when he was younger. We're excited to see how his skills will translate once he arrives next week and begins training with our team."

Ochocinco started playing football at age four but chose to focus on American football in high school.

"Due to the NFL lockout, I'm excited to be able to follow my childhood dream of playing for a Major League Soccer team," Ochocinco said.

The reality TV star was friends with the likes of Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. In January, Ochocinco visited Ronaldo, Kaka and the rest of Real Madrid's squad and was introduced to manager Jose Mourinho.

He has said he uses a football to warm up for NFL practices and games.

Kansas City opens its MLS season on Saturday. It narrowly missed the playoffs last year.

Hopefully Portland can kick off the season with a win, they were looking good in pre-season, some strong stuff, messy goals, but strong stuff.

I think ESPN will start airing MLS games after the UEFA is open, I believe thats what happened last year?

I think bet 365 will be streaming games perhaps? Will wait and check. There are some games played on ESPN, I remember looking, but it's pretty much 3 days late.

EDIt: Actually, I am pretty sure bet 365 will be streaming these games live because I remember being told they stream a-league from my mate in Australia, but it wasn't on my list of games to stream, i.e sky sports holds the license for N.Z so bet 365 would have to ask them to stream it on the web ... I dunno, sounds pretty right to me.Azevo2011-03-20 11:28:06

  • 19' Injury delay for CHV's Andrew Boyens, who looks like he caught an elbow on the last play. Throw-in for the Timbers.
  •
  • 13' CHV's Boyens impedes Perlaza about 25 yards out, giving the Timbers a free kick in a dangerous spot.

It's decent, but I *LOVE* Portland's kitS. Seattle ruined theirs by adding duct tape to their previously excellent home kit, swapping blue with black has resulted in a crap clash kit, and fluoro yellow for their cash-in third kit was NEVER a good idea. Vancouver's away kit is great (I'm gonna buy one) but our home kit is just plain wrong. Chest bar or nothing.

As for the other clubs (incl. Philly), they're not important. Let's face it, only Cascadia matters when it comes to MLS

Is Cascadia a regular thing? Or just started? Wonder if Montreal will be added to it next pre-season heh.

Sadly Portland have not won anything this season, but there kit is damn sexy, especially the home and their training kit. tis sad, pre-season looked promising, to bad There is no stream on bet365 for Chivas vs Portland, HT atm 0:0, Boyens picked up two yellows, so chivas down to 10 men next half, come on timbersAzevo2011-03-30 16:13:05

Cascadia is a geographical region, some refer to it as the Pacific Northwest. Montreal isn't part of the it.The Cascadia Cup has been around since 2004 but the rivalries have been around for longer, from what I hear they were pretty strong in the days of the original NASL too.

Ah righto, that makes sense now, Timbers get their first win as an MLS club, 2-0 win over Chivas, advance in the U.S cup now. To bad it wasn't a league match heh.Azevo2011-03-30 17:17:41

I was sort of watching this game while playing FM. My impressions were that it wasn't too bad, the stadium was packed and the atmosphere was great. Playing standard was generally good. Henry is crap now, no pace, no finesse, can't pass - being carried by the team.
