NZsoccer.com used to run a weekly column updating the exploits of Kiwi off-shore players. Perhaps with the collective effrots of those who use this site we can re-create that column in a thread here.

So to begin with here's a couple:

Ryan Nelson: Played the full 90 minutes in Blackburns 4-1 win over Premiership strugglers Charlton. Was given a 7/10 for his performance by Sky Sports Planet Football. See here: http://home.skysports.com/matchratings.aspx?fxid=298723

David Mulligan: Scun-thorpe remain at the top of League One, despite loosing 3-1 away to Blackpool. David Mulligan did not feature in the team lineup over the weekend.

Duncan Oughton: Was not required off the bench in the Crew's 1-0 win over DC United, their first win of the season.

Simon Elliot: Remains injured and not likely to feature in Fulhams last few games of the season. Fulham are in the middle of the relegation battle loosing 3-1 to Aresenal over the weekend.

Chris Killen: Is still not fit and has not played for Hibernian for a number of months. His contarct expires soon, and Chris has rejected the offer of a new contarct with Hibs.

Andy Boyens: Has been a regular fixture in Toronto FC's defence, alongside team captain and Canadian international Jim Brennan at centre back. Due to his height, Boyens is often used in set pieces for headers. Has played the full 90 minutes in most games this season.

Toronto is falling in love with Andy Boyens.

Mist?  U pissed?

Pleased to see Boyens is doing well at Toronto.  It will be a tough first year for your new club, and that will help Andy toughen up for All Whites action.

their are a few other lads in college football as well in the States. Two from here (Danny Moir & Aaron Clapham) are at the same college but not sure where. Anyone got any info on them?

Anyone know much about the US system? why are the likes of the Olds and Mathews coming home early?

erictheking, i'd imagine its the same as in any country, there are only so many spots up for grabs with pro clubs.

it may not be that they aren't good enough for it, but more they aren't american enough.

think of it this way: 2 players at a similar skill level one from the USA, one not...which one is the American owner going to sign? there'll be less chance of home sickness etc with the American.

Are you suggesting that perhaps they were pushed out? I believe that the college they were at was putting up some decent moeny for them to be there (fees/accomodation) i would have thought that they would have made sure they were getting a good investment.
I guess i hope it was becuase of something like homesickness because they were by far to of the best players we had going around when they headed over there and ith young Boxal leaving to go there next year i hope for his sake he doesnt suffer the same consequences as them.

Aaran Lines is washed up in the USL First division. That's one level below MLS, but we don't have a promotion/relegation system.

Ryan Nelsen - Featured in a 2-1 win over Boro. Played fairly well, let down by a dodgy Warnock at times.

Chris James - Seems that Sanchez doesnt plan on featuring him in the  first team after he bough the Championship + League One Dream Team. Seemingly will be loaned out and has had a few trials with Championship + League One clubs and has featured in trial games. Managers impressed technically but comment he "Doesnt have enough about him physically"

Adrian Webster - Ex Perth man undergoing trials in England, currently unnatatched. Most recentlly featured in a pre-season with Brighton but the manager thought "He was no better than what we already have."

Chris Killen - Played in a 0-0 bore draw last weekend with Celtic, subsequently was started on the bench against Falkirk this weekend, Celtic won 4-1 and Killen got no game time. Doesnt look bright for next week.

it was simply a theory, but the money you speak of is a drop in the ocean over there for them...atleast here they are in the national selectors minds and have the chance of being picked up that way

I imagine it would cost a good $30,000 a year for them to be there wouldnt it? with fees etc...quite a bit for a 16/17year old when you could have a US citizen that would pay you to be there. Rikki Herbert sent them there when he was the acadamy director. He even recommened that Matthews withdrew form the NZ Secondardy Schools team (which he did) so he could concentrate on his school exams before he went to the states.

some of the colleges these kids end up in recieve 'donations' that dwarf those figures you mentioned.....dont forget we arent the only country sending them over. i hope im wrong with my theory of them being pushed out, but when you consider talented youngsters from the USA, Canada, Cuba, Mexico, Chile etc etc etc............ gings2007-08-13 22:49:09

Yeah im pretty sure half their team was from overseas.
These guys were the most promising players in the country at the time. Old is doing pretty good haivng been capped etc but Matthews has dropped off the radar all together (i know he was in the squad against Fiji).

Pretty sure they both dropped out because your College visa only lasts three years and neither finished degrees in that time.

Players joining the MLS draft before completing degrees is pretty rare, as opposed to the higher profile professional sports.

Rory Fallon scored against the mighty Hull City for Plymouth Argyle

(apparently city fans were relieved when he was subbed - but the misery continued)

the result  - not worth talking about

that makes sense for old, or perhaps the chance to play pro for the Jets? which would be understandable.
Matthews is a bright lad, i struggle to believe that he couldnt finish a degree. Did he even last three years?

Dave,

Don't forget to include McGlinchey and Tommy Smith.  Keep them in view so we can claim them as ours when they have to declare.

You home for any Phoenix games ?

Matthews apparently got injured and missed or was going to miss too many games. As a result they ended his funding and hence his stay in the States.

Re: Hard News' entry;

I read Seatter's comment on McGlinchey on another thread back in September that he has till 7 Jan 08 to declare his availability for the AW's. Do we need a rapid fire lobby effort from YF? Maybe a letter from the fans to him?

I'm in the UK and may be able to get a letter into the editor at his local paper over the weekend, if I can't track him down through the club...at least the Celtic PR team will spot it they may give him a reminder.
