You might find that not many people care about the SPL. They won't even show England Estonia so SPL will be a big no no :)

If it isn't Old Firm derby then i don't think people are going to jump at the chance to watch the SPL. I enjoyed watching NZFC highlights i think when there isn't rugby on a friday night they should have a live game of the NZFC.

They don't have NZFC on a friday night, but I think NZFC, A-League, EPL and Champions League should come before the SPL.

I've just ditched Sky (despite the upcpoming phoenix games) becuase it just aint worth the money.

I got it for football. When I first got it they used to have one SPL game per week plus a highlights package. Not many kiwis maybe care for the SPL, but the real point is the lack of variety in the football coverage. Also, bugger all Euro Qualifiers, as someone pointed out above. Yet I am paying tru the nose for a bunch of rugby i don't give a sh%$ about.

Sky seriously need some competition in this country...

There would be more point in having a football channel than a rugby channel.
Football is 12 months of the year and always live football from anywhere in the world.
The rugby channel should be renamed the replay channel cause thats all thats ever f##ken shown!

Why dont you go to the Wellington Celtic Supporters Club on Cambridge Tce and watch the games there. They have live coverage off the Net.

You should try online streaming of games, not entirely legal and the quality isn't great, but its better than near non existant coverage of football on sky. herman2007-06-11 21:30:11

well world football is available here on various satellites, I now that TRT shows some turkish games and highlights, Dutch chanel shows some games from the dutch league and ERT shows almost every olympiakos game and Greek derby game, unfortunatly i doubt people would watch these leagues but also becasue of the language barrior.
My point is that there is world footy available ao they could make a channel quite easily but i dont think it would fly, although TVNZ could put say 4 hours of highlights on the Maori channel instead of showing that random map all the time (the hours its not screning anything) or make a sports channel on that new satellite tv thing theyre making

Sky is introducing a new channel next month called Sky Sport Highlights. Might see some more football through this maybe? Although it will probably just be rugby replays all week.

Sky ditched the SPL and Dutch League to buy Primera Liga games and a crap Serie A game now, Yeah Cagliari, Lazio!! But I like this set up better than the previous.

Yeah getting a satellite dish may get you channels that you want, you'd need to check the channels list for our area to see if you can get that. Costs a bit to get it done but no monthly fees.

To be honest I think that number of people who are into football in this country is big enough that we shouldn't have to be mucking around setting up our own satellite dishes etc. There is a buck to be made here and Sky isn't doing it because they don't have to - they have a nice cosy monopoly and consumers just have to take whatever bullsh*t gets pumped at them...
Sky's coverage of EPL - great
Sky's coverage of Champions league - ok

No way. If they have a football channell then all the epl games and HAL games would be shown live on there instead. I'm quite happy paying the standard sports package but I aint paying another farkin cent if I don't have to.

Champions League is on both ESPN and Sky. We definitely need a football channel. Someone should write a letter to Sky concerning it.

Currently Sky has in as well as ESPN has good coverage of: English Premier League, Spanish La Liga, UEFA Champions League, A League.

And shows some games from: Italian Serie A, MLS, German Cup, Englsih FA Cup, English League Cup, UEFA cup.

Internationally: Good coverage of the two major events (World Cup, European Championship), currently playing U21 Euro, A few friendlies and International Qualifiers.

Sky had Scottish Premier League, Dutch Eredivise and various Highlight packages from around Europe and the World.

A dedicated football channel would be hard to have as many football matches are played at the same time. What other leagues would you like to see?

French Ligue 1
Scottish Premier League
Die Bundisliga
Eredivisie...

This sounds like a message from Sky TV. Anyway, I'd like to see more Serie A games even just a few big games instead of Lazio, Ascoli, Cagliari, Torino. Milan derby would be good and some highlight shows with recent games not what they used to have highlights of games 2 weeks old. Other than that I'm pretty happy with the current coverage, Although whats with All Whites games getting the elbow to SS2 for Rugby games that don't involve the ABs.

i'd like to see coverage of all the games (in top flight football) with Kiwis involved, eg: Celtic, Toronto, Columbus etc etc.

a football channel would be great, but sky would charge like a wounded bull, tinny bastards.

I dont care that you dont care what I think, what made you think I did? I dont argue with everyone...mostly just you, because 90% of what you post is utter sh*t, and the rest of the 10% has some potential, but I manage to pick holes in it so I can reel ya in.

Sky is sh*t though, f**k all football, best is ESPN, which is Yank for f**ks sake, the commentators are utter sh*te. I've gone to watching football on my computer, free and illegal programs but if thats the lengths I gotta go to get it I will. We should bring over Fox Sports from Aussie, they seem to do an excellent job, even have Championship games on.

What pissed me off recently about SKY is that they didnt show Aussie v Uruguay, which although a friendly featured some A-League players and I wanted to have a look. Thank God they showed a replay the next day, but it should be live because they only show sh*t like replays of rugby that has been on 10 times already (and everyone was bored of it the first time they showed it) or cricket which goes on for 3 days. YAWN. ESPN is the best and 1 time i was trying to watch something, and guess what they were showing, Hot Dog eating competitions. I couldnt believe it.

You know what.  Whilst I support the idea of a footie channel instead of the current deal, I have a feeling like some here that sky would put all football onto it leaving nothing on the normal bands.  That ain't good for the pure fact that most kiwis would have absolutly no chance of watching football at all.  Its a pity really.

While I was living in the USA I saw womens football, the NSL and college football on cable as well as free to air tv live.

And now here in the UK Rugby and football are about on equal terms (given the availabity of both, ie tons of footie but also lots of Rugby).

I just believe that NZ media is deliberatly trying to subvert football, be it TVNZ, SKY the papers or radio.  Its ingrained into them to do it.

ESPN is a joke, and a poor quality one at that. They have some good games albeit with budget picture. And the rest of the time they have spelling bee, hot-dog eating, and once I had the misfortune of switching to ESPN and unless my memory decieves me, it was either showing Chess or Scrabble, I can't remember which. I mean that is just down-right pathetic. I've also seen "women's pro action bowling" on ESPN, something must be done!

I am glad that I have got that off my chest :)

What a complete joke this is. Do you really think all the big media organisations in New Zealand are purposely ignoring football and deliberately trying to push it into the background?  The coverage the Phoenix has got in the DomPost and on ZB in Wellington has been considerable.

I suppose you cheer for whoever's playing the All Blacks too as your little protest against the coverage rugby gets.

The problem I have with ESPN is that sky has no control over content, they get the whole package "as is" of the satelite. I have stayed up late to watch WC or Euro qualifiers that they list on the little blue bar at the bottom of the screen. Then I checked the online guide and there is no mention of the football, and to my suprise 3am rolls up and there is replays of national line dancing competition or some other bollacks. I have phoned sky to ask about this and they say, they are told what will be on, advertise it as such, then at the last minute espn may change the time or omit it completely. I subscribe to Arsenal's TV online and i get to listen to every live game whether its league cup, fa cup or priemeir league, just no live images as that would piss of the networks . What im saying is i would pay for a Decent Football channel. When i was in singapore on holiday my wife struggled to drag me out of the hotel as they nearly had 24 hour football coverage on there Star network. And i could watch live games at a decent hour :)

That sounds brilliant, not having to get up at 3 in the morning to watch a game.

Yeah  I do mate, some post grad research I did supports this idea (especially at TVNZ).

And look, Cricket, Rugby and that stupid sport netball get more coverage in their off seasons the football does during the on season.  As for the two examples you gave, they've only recently started doing that and it is becuase they have jumped on the Phoenix band wagon (thats a good thing) but 12 months ago the Dom was rubbish.  And one final point most articles you read in any of our print media are/were only NZ Football, NZ Knights or Phoenix press releases, no reporters do/did the required journalism.

And no I don't, I go to ALL AB games where possible.  Went and saw the Maoris play the other day and even had a few drinks with them post match

any word on the streaming sites mate,

also it was brought to my attention that certain media companies in Aus linked with AFL purposefully dogged the melbourne fans and the A-league pulling the hooligan card which i think is very cowardly and childish

i immagine us chanting semi loud, banners, bit of jumping after goals and if we are lucky a flare.

....we are not going to behave any where near fans at a PAOK VS ARIS game in greece or euro derby match....

where fans, take bombs, light fires, light upwards of 40 flares, fight with each other, police and firemen too, attack players from opposing teams equipment like thier bus......the list goes on.....this is hooliganism not what we will be doing

so i fear we will be attacked by the media and im posative that rugby fans fear the development of this sport in NZ,rugby is a mino game and always will be only afew countries actually care about it, NZ, SA and wales, plus pacific countries.

also the fact that parents prefere their kids to play footy not rugby for obvious reasons

when the time comes we should discuss a family zone for games where parents can be assured that no violent or offensive behvior takes place. Hopefully this will combat anti footy media
