Question about own goals

I just want to know more about own goals and how they get credited.

Who decides if it is an own goal? Is a deflection still an own goal? The reason I ask is that sometimes it is only from the TV replays that I see that contact has been made with a player and it gets credited to the striker instead of an "own goal".

Does the FIFA match report for WC games distinguish own goals and if so who actually decides if it is or not?

No I wasn't actually but that's a good point and I'd be curious to know that one, out of interest. I guess also - are there "first goal scorer" betting options and would it count if it was an own goal?ahmad2010-06-09 00:24:29

Own goal is usually one of the first goal scorer options

basic rule is that if the shot is on target and is deflected, it is credited to the attacker.  If the shot is off target and deflected, it is an own goal.

In cases that are not clear-cut, Feverish, Sepp Blatter and Lady Ga Ga get locked in a room with a crate of absinthe until they decide.

I think this is the "basic rule" some exceptions are made for shots off target and decisions are generally in favour of the scorer.

Does someone make the official call on whether it is an own goal or not? Given that these are WC fixtures I am talking about, is there tighter scrutiny for such games and official stats?

In all competitions I think the referee does but could be fourth official or match referee. No change in decisions given it is a World Cup either btw.

So will it go down on the official score sheet as an own goal, if the officials decide that it will be?

The reason I'm asking is that I want to have a spot prize in a "sweep" I'm running for team that scores the first own goal. But then I realised it might not be so clear cut.

So will the game report identify official "own goals"?

The referees award the goals, but if there's is some confusion or something missed decision can be changed, presumably by the organising body for the competition.

Yes.

Ok thanks for that. In that case I will use it for a spot prize (was not sure if it would cause too many arguments/complaints/appeals).
