The Illustrious Third Place Playoff. Who cares?

The game no one wants to play. The thread no one could be bothered starting. Who can get up to claim the illustrious third place?

Paul the Octopus says Germany. I've learnt to never doubt him. Although I think the game will mean more for Uruguay as they are stoked to get this far, whereas Germany really hoped to be playing the next day.

No one can be bothered yet two threads started within a minute of each other

Three for me, and two for them.

Not gonna bother with the graphical write up for this. Think it'll be worth watching though. I remember the Euro 08 third place playoff between Turkey and Russia was a real corker. Ended 5-5 and went to penalties if i remember correctly.

Was there a game? I can't find anything on the game on google. Wikipedia says third place playoffs were abolished.

I think you might be right. I think it helps that both of those teams were pretty stoked to get that far and still had a lot to play for. I doubt Germany will be that stoked about this game, although I remember they played well four years ago against Portugal.

it's in Port Elizabeth, owrst attendances of the tournament.  I'm predicting semi-farce, half empty ground, no-one will care (apart from maybe Klose)

Normo's coming home

Buffy's pulling your leg, there's no third place playoff in EUROs.

As for the game, Germany's a better side, and being Germans, thay don't take anything easy, so think they'll win.

The last two third place games featured the home team which probably helps. They also provide a few goals.
Bit of a contradiction there. I predict four goals.

Oh yes, the 3-1 Turkish win over S. Korea in '02 was a great game to watch.  Suker's goal was great, I didn't even know what had happened they scored so quickly.  Also, unless my memory is failing me, Gne? gave Ilhan Mansiz a start and he had a good game.

Over half the reason it was so memorable, however, was due to me being at a mates place and his dad came marching through the door with fast food for me and said friend.  Friend had fallen asleep, though, and I devoured it all with gusto (felt ill next day).

The Portugal - Germany one was also just as memorable as not only did Oliver Kahn play, but Germany won and Nuno Gomes scored a great header for Portugal.

Hope this one lives up to the legacy of the last couple.

Hakan Sukur.

I was thinking of Hakan as well so not quite sure how I mixed the last names.

Looking forward to seeing Germany again. Hoping they put on a strong team.

Yea, that Turkey vs Korea game is about the only 3rd / 4th playoff game I remember. Was great.

I doubt Germany will really bother playing. They may even put out a 2nd string. They wont want to be there thats for sure. I know someone who will be cheering Klose on for golden boot though, thats the only meaning to this game.

Allegedly

There would not be a team on this planet that would put a 2nd X1 out for this game.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

rofl Holland were flat as tacks in that game. The fire was well and truly out by then.

Germany to win... If they are motivated enough to play

Germany will definitely be up for it. Will want to atone for a sub-par performance against Spain.

May give Marin a run. He was ineffective against Serbia when he came on, but devastating against Bosnia in a warm-up match. Very exciting prospect.

I know, I know, its serious!

He's a Bosnian Serb. What else would you expect.

Hans-Jorg Butt getting a start in goal. Hope Germany get a penalty and he takes it. Not sure if a keeper has ever scored at the World Cup before so would be great to see.

Three for me, and two for them.

loving this game so far

khidira seems to be playing further forward than he has in their previous games and he looks good, makes nice runs into attacking space
