The two of them are often the two AR's for Phoenix home games, in fact, they've probably had more A-League games in the past 2 years than O'Leary has.
The man in the middle - Referee Admiration/Angst/Appointments thread
At least O'Leary will do a good job. I wish he did more Nix games.
Uh oh.
I thought O'Leary was fine. I didn't think that was a foul on the Bosnian defender for the Nigerian goal.
The offside was unfortunate, but in real time it looked pretty close.
They definitely don't deserve what they're getting from the local press.

Tho if that means he does less ASBP games .....then yes , yes indeedy ...

If we had scored a legitimate goal against Paraguay in the last World Cup that would have meant we'd got into the second round, but it had been ruled offside by a lino from a small and distant country that only possessed ONE professional club so we instead went home EARLY, don't you think our press (and supporters) would feel aggrieved?
doubt our press would even understand the offside rule enough to feel aggrieved.

I would feel much less aggrieved if we had been expected to easily deal with Paraguay and the disallowed goal had come in the first half of that game and where we failed to capitalise on plenty of other chances we had during the remainder of the game where in reality we have ourselves to blame for the loss more than the linesman, than the situation you have described above.
O'Leary alright. The lino on the far side atrocious.
Mark Rule flagged offside a definite Dzeko goal. Put Bosnia out of the tournament in other words.
Mark Rule - what kind of level has he refereed / assistant refereed at?
In my opinion, only officials who have refereed in professional leagues should be given games at the World Cup.
I know O'Leary is an A-League ref and that's good enough for me. (Interestingly, how many A-League matches did he ref last season?)
But Mark Rule (and fellow assistant Hintz) - only ASB Premiership? Not a good enough level.
ASB Premiership is probably a weaker league than the Conference National and some semi-pro regional leagues in England and weaker than the State Leagues in Australia.
If people overseas (and in Bosnia) found out that the assistant refs for an important World Cup game only had experience reffing in such a minor amateur league with crowds of fifty (Otago) to a few hundred, they would find it laughable.
The lino got it wrong. Ok it happens the world over in every league. Unfortunately its the 4th offside wrong at this tournament I read and the only one that has decided a game. Its just the glare on this tournament magnifies it into a hanging offence where as Sunday league out the back of some park, the worst he would get is being told to fuck off by two men and a dog.
At least it wasn't the Lino that we know in Aisle 12 as "Offside" because he invaribly gets it wrong. The short stocky bald guy. He knows us and we know him and now he tries to run the line over by aisles 26 to 30 because he knows when he gets it wrong, he cops it. We usually start calling "offside" everytime an attacking move starts before he has a chance once he's done his usual cock up..
Hardly atrocious. Made one mistake. Bosnia had plenty of chances, so put themselves out of the World Cup.
Perhaps one blatantly wrong game changing mistake by a Lino make it atrocious?
Dzeko crying about it to the press was pretty prominent in the Guardian's WC coverage this morning. Not just NZ media on this story...
Dzeko is a pussy. Can't take anything he says seriously, especially when he goes back to bitching about that 'foul' leading up to the goal
The Guardian only care because he plays for City. If it was a no name Iranian complaining that the ref cost them a win against Nigeria then nobody in England would care.
I just had a phone call which gave a really interesting perspective.
In the opening game, everyone complained about the penalty given. The general thought was that while there was contact, it was not enough to say 'that's a penalty'. Now we have this incident and while there is a little small bit of contact if you find the right camera angle, people want this given.
I guess you are damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Umm sure, but did you read what I wrote in my post, or were you just quoting to see if the button worked?
I totally expect the Bosnian press to reflect their nation's understandable frustration about being on the wrong end of a close offside decision.
But TVNZ aren't, last time I checked, a Bosnian news outlet.

The New Zealand press didn't mention Dzeko at all. In fact, they were pretty skinny on any detail or analysis. Surprise surprise.
Just disappointing from our media (again). I should be getting used to their lazy, ill informed coverage I guess.

I read yr post. I think O'Leary was good. The Nigerian goal was good. So was the Bosnian goal - but that wasn't given. What should/could have been 1 -1 became 0 -1 and end of Bosnia instead of continuation. That's all I'm saying.
You see someone has started a petition (badly written, think English is a second language) for FIFA to fire Peter O'Leary and the result to be changed to 1-1. Got over 23k signatures too.
Funny they used picture of him talking to Nigeria keeper as proof he favored them and they also ask that the Nigeria team get drug tested, as the "must" of been on something of course...
I agree with what Patrick said, really they lost it themselves. While it could of changed the match, they didn't take their chances and are now going home.

Didn't notice the assistant refs much I suppose all season despite watching all games on TV. I do notice the refs.
The A-League website bizarrely never lists match officials in its match reports - a major short-fall:
http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/aleague/result...
My reckoning using Google (the A-League website is no bloody use since it lists no officials) is that Mark Rule's sum total of experience in professional matches last season was four Hyundai A-League matches as assistant referee (one in November, two in December, one in January). Other assistant refs were used in other Phoenix home games such as Ryan Gallagher:
https://www.google.co.nz/webhp?sourceid=chrome-ins...
Hintz was assistant in eight matches:
https://www.google.co.nz/webhp?sourceid=chrome-ins...
O'Leary reffed six A-League matches last season:
https://www.google.co.nz/webhp?sourceid=chrome-ins...
Mark Rule is easily the least experienced of the three OFC officials at the current World Cup and was called up at the last minute to replace the injured Ravinesh Kumar from Fiji.
Norbert Hauata from Tahiti has previously been senior to Rule and Hintz at FIFA age group tournaments. Hauata was on the referees list at last year's u-17 World Cup in the UAE and reffed two games. Rule was only on the assistant ref's list and was Hauata's assistant in those two games. O'Leary didn't attend:
http://boxscorenews.com/ofc-match-officials-appoin...
O'Leary, Hintz and Kumar were the OFC officials at the u-20 World Cup in Turkey last June- July (O'Leary the ref) and the team did two group games:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_FIFA_U-20_World_...
O'Leary's CV is impressive:
O'Leary has extensive experience in reffing internationals in Oceania since 2004; the OFC Champions League; the 2007 and 2009 club World Cups; plus the 2007, 2009, 2013 FIFA u-20 World Cups:
Norbert Hauata from Tahiti has previously been senior to Rule and Hintz at FIFA age group tournaments. Hauata was on the referees list at last year's u-17 World Cup...
Just on this point. Hauata hasn't been senior to Rule as it were. There are two different FIFA lists. A referee list and an AR list. Mark was on the AR one and Norbert was on the referee one. By the time it comes around to the World Cup, they have been specialists in their chosen role for years. FIFA doesn't appoint ARs from the referee list and vice versa. If, hypothetically, Norbert wanted to be an AR, he would have to give up his R badge and go back to his Island and look to be nominated and accepted for an AR badge from square one.

I can't believe I sruck up for O'Leary but hey, he was supporting his linesman who he felt had a better view. I have no issues with that but I don't think Mark Rule should ever go anywhere near Bosnia. He certainly got that call wrong. Still, it is not like this was a last minute opportunity.
An unfortunate picture of O'Leary with the Nigerian goalie (ie unlucky timing of a not unusual post match situation).
HOWEVER ......
I note also that Dzecko is hugging a Nigerian player. Is it not true that Dzecko missed numerous gilt edged opportunities? And now embracing a Nigerian! I think we all know whats REALLY going on here!
The plot thickens ......
Do they play cricket in Nigeria or Bosnia?

I am still extremely aggrieved about the Guatamalen who refereed us against Italy in 2010 and was completely out of his depth
and O'Leary's decision was nothing like that. Fair goal.
Though neither of the one's in the Italy game were.

Assistant Referee 2: Hakan ANAZ (AUS)

Standby Assistant Referee: Rodney AQUINO (PAR)
At least the referee decision in the last minute of the Greece/Ivory Coast game will get people talking about a differeant ref blunder.
Looked like a blatant bit of cheating.
Penalty for me. Clear contact.
Did the referee not wish to see the dental records on Suarez? That too, might take the heat of O'Leary.
Penalty for me. Clear contact.
I would be interested in your opinion of the Nigerian goal v Bosnia.A trip on the Bosnian defender or not?

No foul. Incidental contact and a 50/50 coming together of players.
In todays game, the only reason the player went to the floor was the contact.

Interesting.I thought the only reason the Bosnian player fell over was because his leg was clipped accidently.Good to know why it wasn't a foul.
Law 12:
A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following seven offences in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:
- kicks or attempts to kick an opponent
- trips or attempts to trip an opponent
- jumps at an opponent
- charges an opponent
- strikes or attempts to strike an opponent
- pushes an opponent
- tackles an opponent
“Careless” means that the player has shown a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or that he acted without precaution.
--
So in asking whether this is a penalty, the only question is this:
Did Player A kick/trip/tackle an opponent with a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge, or without precaution.
Yes: pen.
No: play on.
--
Now, kick and trip require contact by definition. You can't kick someone without kicking them.
Tackling however, not so much. You can make a tackle without contacting an opponent. It can still be a penalty. (Crazy imho, but that's what the rules say).
--
I initially thought the pen today was a Greek dive. But the replay showed a trip. So I'm comfy it was a penalty.
How can you give a penalty when there is no contact??
See this angle. I think that is extremely clear unless someone has something else that completely contradicts that?
Also on the podcast you are saying the penalty in the opening game is not and now this one is? Hmmmm. There is more contact on the Fred penalty than there is here.

Depends on the manner of the contact. The contact on Fred was not enough to cause him to fall to the ground, yet he did. The contact in today's match (which isn't shown on the angle in the video you linked, find another replay) was the only reason the Greek striker couldn't get his shot away, therefore it is a foul.
