Togo's BAN????
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Togo have been banned from the next two Africa Cup of Nations following their withdrawal from this year's tournament.

The Confederation of African football (Caf) also fined the Hawks $50,000 for quitting the competition in the wake of a gun attack on the team bus in Angola.

WTF!!!!!!

This is quite possibly the dumbest decision ever made by a footballing body anywhere in the world.

CAF suspends Togo from the next two Nations Cup Tournaments? .... An insult to the Togolese rooted in sheer stupidity, i say. Is it so easily forgotten that if the gunmen who attacked the Togo bus were not typically African in their marksmanship there may have been no Togo player alive to stand on the pitch? Only in Africa ....

...so maybe...

f.k the media, FIFA have to overturn the decision. All the media can do is highlight it. FIFA's call.

Imagine if the ICC banned countries from refusing to play in Pakistan, there wouldn't be any test nations left.

A podcast I listen to tells me this morning that Togo have in fact been banned because, while the players wanted to play on, the Togolese Government forbade them to.

Whether this is true or not I'm not sure, but that's the line that CAF are apparently running with.

The ban is to discourage politicising of these events.  Apparently if the team had wanted to go home of their own accord then there wouldn't be a ban now, but they were ordered home by their Government and so there's a ban.

I have not verified the truth of any of this, just reporting what I heard from a reasonably reputable sauce.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.
