Why do players throw their hands up when they commit a foul?

Isn't that an admission of guilt?

OK, you're pretending you didn't do it, but if you really didn't do it, you would just carry on playing without responding to the whistle.

I imagine they're also awful poker players. 

Throwing their hands in the air every time they bluff.
