Hey if Australia won the right to host the world cup in 2018, do you think New Zealand would be interested in hosting maybe 1 or 2 groups? I think its possible and would really benefit you guys...

Will FIFA allow it to be across confederations ? Do we have the travel infrastructure to move 10000 dutch fans from Auckland on Saturday to Christchurch on the Wednesday ?
Moot point anyway, as I can't see Aus beating European bids or China to 2018 anyway.

If England qualify, I could be a piece of number 8 wire travel infrastructure and drive a few Tykes around the venues

FIFA would allow cross confederation because Oceania has never hosted a World Cup and will never be able to with no country in the confederation be able to host one on its own.
Well you're hosting the Rugby World Cup in 2011 that would be a good test run, and besides you willl only be hosting 2 groups so you only need 2 cities which will probably be Auckland and Wellington.
If New Zealnd is in on this bid it oculd actually help us land the World Cup.

I don't think it even made tv3 news.

not when i was flicking between it didn't
and tv 1 missed the chance to interview a politician or two , or the politicians hadn't had time to ask their advisors to explain the difference in scale between THE World Cup and that Mr Mallard's hobby 'world' cup - and so couldn't be arsed responding
edit - no pun intended

Dont see it happeing myself - the Australian bid itself would be very much an underdog, and we wouldnt be ble to host a single group (6 matches), let lone 2. Im not sure that ay of our stadiums other than te RoF would met the FIFA criteria (at this stage anyway), and as HN said, our general infrastructure (airports, roads, beds) would be woefully inadequate to cope with even one group...the RWC might help a bit in this respect, but Im not sure itd help enough...

Provided they did win it, are Australia likely to give games away to another country?
I doubt it.

Australia's problem will be the number of stadia needed. Even allowing for the grounds there they are well short. If they can push a group here (and by 2018 Eden Park, Lancaster, here and maybe even the new Dundein stadium might be options although i suspect here would need have increased capacity) it releases the need for major additions that might not be used in Aus.
The infrastructure would be amajor challenge here, even if we are talking ten years time.
As I say though, I can't see them picking up 2018.

Yea, traffic would spend an hour at the Otaki roundabout on the state highway trying to get into town, and everyone would miss the game!

australia will go alone, they don't need and most importantly want to co host the wc with nz.
in 2018 nz will have 2 grounds that fit fifas criteria in chirstchurch and auckland (unless westpac can be upgraded)
melbourne: 100k
syney: 83k
perth: 70k
brisbane: 60k
second melbourne/sydney ground: 50-60k
adelaide: 45-60k
and only 3 more need to be upgraded after that which could come from numerous places such as
newcastle
gosford
gold coast (their stadium ins't that ideal for a 20k upgrade but if there is a city with the right infrastructure gold coast is right up there)
canberra
townsville
wollingong (why not)
but still that isn't that great comared to england/spain/china/usa
aus won't get 2018, best bet is to go for 2022, which is still unlikely

I remember being told by a guy working at the MCG that it doesnt fit with the FIFA criteria, something about the elevation and the gradient of the pitch, but was drunk at the time, so cant remember the full details.
But anyway, Im pretty sure that for 32-team World Cups FIFA demand a minimum of 10 venues complying with its requirements (including the minimum capacity of 35,000), but the actual preference is 12 (as in Germany in 2006) or 14 venues (plan for Brazil 2014), so Australia will need to do a lot of work to upgrade/extend its facilities solely on that basis. Add in the geographic position of Australia and the limited points of entry into the country, and World Cup hosting starts looking a bit tricky for Oz. Which is a shame, as Id love to see it happen.

^^ the minimum is 8 venues but 12 is desiered
and minimum capacity is 40,000 (but that is expected to increase)
i think it is unlikely aus will get the world cup in the next 30 years, be great to see it happen though

Good point. It's so far away here and Australia for the rest of the world. Too isolated perhaps to have a realistic chance of hosting. No doubt Australia could develop the infrastructure. After all, they have hosted an Olympic Games.

Well, if thats true, they must have changed the criteria in the last 18 months or so. There were a few stadiums in Germany in 2006 with a capacity of less than 40,000 (most notably in Nurnberg).
