He is recognised as such but I believe that Aussies like Viduka or even Christian Karembru (probably spelt wrong) who won a world cup are better.

Ru crazy disco, Viduka? he's an ox whose had only 1 gd season which was last year. Rufer was the man and werder bremen and is still revered there.

Karembru fair enough, a tight call but Viduka?

Christian Karembeu better than Wynton? No.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

OK Viduka is maybe pushing it but Tim Cahill is potentially the pick of them all.

You have to understand that this was voted on buy all the Fifa Members, and it refers to players last century. viduka was in Croatia around 2000 and cahill was still in Aussie somewhere. Its only really been in the last 10 years that Aussie players have started to make a mark.
Rufer was also voted in the all time 11 import players to the bundesliga. he top scored in 94 in the champions league. What would your reaction be today if a Kiwi was the top scorer in the champions league. this just goes to show how poorly the sport was covered in NZ that most people don't know the achievements of our greatest ever football export.

Karembeu played for france - to me he shouldn't be included. Does that mean that someone like andrew mehrtens would be elegible for African rugby player of the 20th century? I think not. A little different perhaps as mehrtens was bought up in NZ, but a fair comparison nonetheless. I don't believe Karembeu should be elegible whether he was better then wynton or not.

If you look them up on wikipedia rufer has a much bigger piece than karembeu - an indication of who was better perhaps?

hahahaha dont mock me - third post in a row i know i know...

But just thought I'd bum myself out... saw that karembeu was indeed in the running for that award and I DONT AGREE WITH IT at all.

And then saw that Frank Farina had the biggest wikipedia piece out of the three of them but wynton still won...

you really shouldn't judge someone's worth by the size of their Wiki

It's a tough call because there are a number of candidates that are all pretty close. Wynton is certainly amongst the top echelon though. Perhaps more so because when he left NZ and became pro in Europe, it was due largely to his being so outstanding that he was probably the only player in NZ at the time capable of footing it in Europe. That says something. Today, there are young players coming from academies and developing to a high level, more often. Wynton didn't have that sort of luxury back then.

Yeah i think he was and still is the best. Cahill of Australia is up there but i still think Rufer is the best.

There are only really 3 canditates that stand on the same wavelength. Harry Kewell, Wynton Rufer and Christian Karemberu. I'd say Wynton because Harry is made of glass.
