When exactly was Boyens played out of position for the All Whites?

He was better than Vicelich!! Vielich almost cost a goal in the first 15 for misreading a cross, fortunately Mossy saved his arse and saved at the  strikers feet and for the second goal he through out a leg to intercept a pass to the striker in side our 18 yard box... my question been here, why wasn't he closer to the man he was marking who, collected the ball and scored??

Boyen and Reid were always going to get pulled out of position and dragged out wide - not their faults, we had two wing backs playing out of position, was always going to happen. Plus no midfield so they had to track runners and try to stop people moving forward with the ball.

All in all - he was by no means our worst.

Agree with this, Vicelic was dreadful, especially in the first half.

Boyens had a better game then usual. Like touchme pointed out it was a very difficult task for the defenders with the way the team was put out. I thought Reid had an exceptional game, I'm not sure how vocal he is but I get the feeling if he talks more and maybe gets a little stronger he could be a suitable replacement for Nelson. Obv not as good but suitable.

pretty sure herbert has played him at fullback a few time which would be out of position.

That's hardly all the time, is it? Which is what you said originally.

He's been played exclusively as centre-back for the All Whites in the last two years.

Back 3 = 3 cente-backs.

Using your logic, anyone playing in the back 3 for the All Whites, including Nelsen, is playing out of position since they all play in a back 4 with two centre-backs for their clubs.

Umana in, Boyens out: It seems Michael Umana has become a first-choice center back for Robin Fraser, much to the chagrin of some Chivas fans. Despite being a below-average defender for the Goats on a points per start basis as of July 4, he has moved up the depth chart over Andrew Boyens, and has started the last eight games. He hasn't made any egregious mistakes since failing to stop Dominic Oduro from scoring in the Chicago game, and I don't recall Boyens really messing anything up in recent weeks. But if Chivas continue to rack up points, Umana's struggles will be forgiven by Chivas fans.

Andrew Boyens: This is probably the player I have been most confused about this season. He started the season off strong, and except his brief performance in the nightmare Real Salt Lake match, where he got two yellow cards within the first half hour (and that was before Marcos Mondaini broke Javier Morales' ankle) he has played really well in the center of defense, and even scored a goal. Then, he went off on national duty with New Zealand, and he hasn't played much since. Fraser seems to prefer Michael Umana to Boyens, and I think a lot of Chivas fans have been puzzled by that, as Boyens looks to be a better defender. Perhaps behind the scenes there is more reason for his benching? That may be the answer to this riddle.

Boyens' midseason grade: B

Boyens an unused sub in the disasterous shambles of their 3-0 home loss to DC United, where Brazilian centre-back David Junior Lopes was red-carded for breaking DC United midfielder Chris Pontius' leg. Defensive stocks already threadbare...
Thus Andy's chances of playing in Chivas' next game seem good:

'There are questions at center back, however. Pearce is still out and Jnior Lopes is unavailable after picking up a red card against DC. Without them, there will be an opportunity for players further down the depth chart to stake a claim for the stretch run.

Weve got Andy Boyens, who has been training hard, and its an opportunity, said captain Simon Elliott. Heaths on the mend, hell be back soon, but you have to look at it as an opportunity for someone to be raising their hand and saying, 'I deserve to play every week.' Its what are you preparing to do time. '

Reports suggest he had one of his better games for Chivas, preventing LA from increasing their tally on occassion:
"Right away on Sunday, the Galaxy put pressure on Chivas USA's goal. Barrett broke in alone on 'keeper Dan Kennedy but couldn't get a ball into the back of the net as Goats defender Andrew Boyens rushed back to clear the ball right off the line"

From the one of the biggest Chivas supporters' sites, The Goat Parade:

Boyens looked good tonight: He was a bit lucky on the defensive end, but Andrew Boyens looked great tonight. He was one of the top players on a subpar game overall for Chivas. He had two close-range clearances in the first six minutes, and his goal line clearance in the first minute, although fortunate, changed the course of the match and allowed Chivas to stay in the game far longer than they probably deserved. In addition to generally good defensive play, Boyens also had a couple of chances on headers on the offensive end, although both were wide. This performance did not alter my belief that Boyens should have been the starting center back in place of Michael Umana for much of the season. I am not a coach, I do not know what could be happening behind the scenes, but Boyens seems like he should get the spot ahead of Umana. He should get that anyway with Umana's knee injury likely to sideline him next week in the season finale against the Seattle Sounders.
Defense was shaky again: Although they only allowed one goal, and Boyens played pretty well, the defense was collectively shaky and if it wasn't for the multiple wasted chances by Barrett and Adam Cristman, this could have been a rout within 15 minutes.

oh dear, poor Andy has another own-goal shocker, Chivas USA lost their last game of the season 3-1against seattle sounders. the own goal was the opening goal 7 mins after Andy had come on to replace another player. Feel for him.

He was also replaced during the reserve team game. They were losing 3-2 when he came off. Chivas got a goal and it finished 3-3.

Voting has closed, and once again you, the fan, have spoken! The fans' choice for 2011 Chivas USA Defender of the Year is Heath Pearce.  While four players got votes, Heath won handily and only really got a run for his money from the runner-up, Ante Jazic. Third place was a tie between Andrew Boyens and Zarek Valentin. Thanks very much for voting and making your voice heard!

Boyens was picked up by LA Galaxy in Round 1 of Stage 2 of the 're-entry draft'. Probably chosen to add some depth on their reserves' bench.
