Angus Kilkolly has signed with FK Panevezys in Lithuania!

An interesting move. Hope it leads to bigger things within Europe!

Not sure that it's a step-up in terms of level of play, but being in Europe could provide other opportunities, so good on him.

Beautiful part of the world as well. Lots of fun for a young lad in Vilnius and especially a few hours away in Riga. And with low cost airlines like air Baltic he can spend weekends in the swiss alps or French riviera for 50 euros.

Well weekends in the off season and week days in the regular season. What I'm saying is for the lifestyle being in the EU, even if it's in the far east, is better than playing in the Ukraine or Russia or even the US or Asia as Europe is small, well connected, and easy to travel around. He's also living in an area which has turned into a bit of a party capital as there's plenty of cheep booze and food, lots of nightclubs and bars, and very attractive girls. Heck Riga even had a Kiwi bar right in the old town, doubt its still there though.

As long as he doesn't mind drunk Germans and Poms on stag do's vomiting in the streets he'd be a fool no to enjoy himself.

Edit: I googled it, still there surprisingly: http://www.kiwibar.lv/

Looks like that "Kiwi Bar" has a great selection of Kiwi Ales on tap such as Bombardier, Guiness, Leffe & Zelta ! .. or maybe theyre doing the honourable thing & saving the population of Europe being subjected to "insert crap Kiwi beer of choice here".

Owned by Australians (see tripadvisor).

That's a shame, must have changed owners since 2008.

Is this even a professional league? Didn't realise it was division two

No, it would be amateur, perhaps semi-pro for the top players. The first division would mostly be semi-pro as well, with perhaps the Vilnius teams being professional.

Football would be the third most popular sport in Lithuania after Basketball and Ice Hokey. And Lithuania itself is probably only 2.5million people if that.

and don't think Angus is there on an amateur contract

He is there on a pro contract with training being full time. It is a televised league. I think most people would see this as a stepping stone, a chance to play football full time and get exposure to wider Europe. In New Zealand central league he was training twice a week so it's a step up at least in intensity.

The club must have high hopes then because I doubt many players in second division Lithuanian teams are pro.
