Used it on and off with Bilbao. With most sides in Spain playing with only one out and out striker, he tended to go with two central defenders.

Really hard to get it to work but when it does it is spectacular. When Bielsa took over at Bilboa it took the Basque team months to get it right....they struggled initially and then had a great run.....Made the UEFA cup final playing fantastic football.

Not sure if this is what Hudson is planning but if it is then it would be tough to get the sufficient time to bed in in with the AWs.

Bielsa never seems to last anywhere. Is it because he is crazy or is it because his techniques only work for a short amount of time before it's figured out?

The common perception is that it just takes too much out of the players to play with that intensity over the course of a whole season. His big successes have all been in South America, and that's where he developed the system, so I'm inclined to believe that the system isn't quite suited to European football, whether it is the intensity issue or something else.

Most attempts at putting a footballing ideology above all else don't last long. Bielsa strikes me as a theorist of the game, taking certain principles as far as they can before they become completely abstract. So he's widely admired and definitely a big influence on contemporary thinking about the game, but his lack of even a bit of pragmatism makes it hard to get continuing success.

As an aside, I think Guardiola could be much the same, but he had the good fortune of inheriting a squad that could play the way he wanted almost immediately, and his approach was a continuation of the way Barca had been heading for years, rather than an abrupt change. Now he's gone and taken over another ridiculously gifted squad, but even with them his approach has looked flawed at times.

I still think their are places for the likes of Bielsa and Guardiola......they are theorists. But often they advance football strategy to new levels. Others then pick up the baton and take their ideas and implement them to suit their own circumstances.

The problem with Bielsa is that his ideas are often way above what ordinary players can implement. At OM he is on a tight budget so he has to try and adapt his game to suit the players he has available. If he could pick his own eleven they would smash Ligue 1

He is in know way rigid....his 3331 will often morph into 4 at the back during a game. If the opposition plays two up front then his team will play 3 at the back. If the opposition introduce wingers to attack wide then someone drops back to make it a four man defense.

It will be interesting to see how much Hudson follows the Biesla model with the AW's. The critical thing with three at the back is mobility and good technique of your defenders. You can get exposed if you turn over ball and your wingbacks are high. You then expose your defenders to one on one situations. Which is fine if they are quick and have good technique.

Of the current squad Winston could do it no problem.....Durante and Siggy I would worry about.

It will be fun watching the progress of both OM and the AW's

Yeah I didn't mean his formation was too rigid, more that the basic priniciples he aims for sometimes appear to be put ahead of his team's ability to reach them.

Still, it's probably a great environment for Bill to be in as a youngster

Bill on the bench for the Marseille seniors.....did not got on the field. still it shows he is on the radar for the main squad. OM beat Evian 3-1 and are now 2nd on the Ligue 1 table.

Huge controversy here in France sporting circles. Last week at a press conference Bielsa, OM's guru coach fired a broadside at OM's Chairman. Accused him of lying to him when he signed up. Apparently he was promised that 30 million euros would be spent on new players. He said he submitted a list of 12 players he wanted recruited and non of them where signed.

Its kind of wierd but it happens quite often on the Continent....The Chairman is in charge of recruiting players and the coach just gets on and coaches whoever he gets. This is the case at OM. Imagine at the Nix Dome doing all the recruiting and Ernie just coaching.....wouldn't work IMO.

The OM chairman signed a few nobodies and Bielsa is not happy. He inherited a very poor squad from last season and then they sold Valbuena, their best player. The fact that they are playing fantastic football and near the top of the table is a testament to Bielsa's coaching ability. Its all good for Tuiloma as it means he will get more opportunities than he would have if they had bought in a number of better players.

As an aside its interesting to watch supposed coaching "guru's". IMO the real testament to how good a coach is....give them an average bunch of players and see what they can do. Bielsa so far looks like he has that ability to transform average players into a good team. I watched Athletico Madrid beat Real yesterday. Their coach is brilliant.....despite his team being plundered of players at the end of last season he still had the ability to get his team of no bodies to beat the mega rich Real.

The opposite is Mourinho IMO.....they were poor last year and he couldn't get them going. Answer to that...open up the cheque book and buy even more mega star players like Fabrigas, Costa etc.

I wonder if there is a lesson in this somewhere for Hudson....if he can transform the AW's then he gets all the kudos he deserves..and he will have to do it without a chequebook.

Austin, has Bill made a 1st team breakthrough recently - since your last post? If so does El Loco see him as a DM? OM currently top Ligue 1 too.

Looking through OM's results on the Ligue 1 website it seems that he just had the one game on the bench.

Bill has had one game on the bench for the 1st team since my last post. He has also played 77 mins for the reserves as a DM. Mid week Beilsa organised a game between the first team and the reserves to give some of the senior squad more game time. He rested some of the very top guys and drafted two players from the reserve team to play with the seniors.....Bill was one of these guys and he played most of the game ...as a DM. So this shows that Bill is still on the radar.

OM are top of the table a good 5 points above the big spending PSG. Beilsa has chosen the same starting 11 for the last 3 games and he does not seem to use the bench that often. Marseille have a very lean squad.....I think that with injuries and suspensions Bill is highly likely to get game time this season. Beilsa has no problems with throwing in youngsters.....he has already used a 19 yo CB and a 16 yo winger in the 1st team this season.

Great atmosphere at the Stade Veledrome last week where OM beat St Etienne 2-1. 55,000+ fans and the place was rocking.....the noise they make is incredible. Not a cheap day out though.....a ticket close to the goal line down low was about $120

Not in the squad for the 2-1 away win vs. Caen on the weekend.

Marseilles are now five points clear of Bordeaux and seven points ahead of PSG.

PSG who?

Apparently Bill has played twice for the reserves this season in CF2 (two starts and 169 minutes):

Beilsa has organised a game today against Nimes. It will be the Marseille 1st team minus the players away on international duty or injured/rested.

Bill has made the squad of 16 for this match. The Forums are picking him to start at DM.

Game will be screened live on Canal +. kickoff is 6.30pm Friday local time... So that should make it 5.30 am Saturday NZ. There is a possibility that the game will be canceled as the area has been pounded by rain for the last week. A decision will be made a few hours before kickoff

Bills game for the Marseille 1st team against Nimes was canceled at midday because of the weather. Another game was organised at the last minute against Arles-Avignon......a Div2 side.

Game finished 1-1. Bill started at DM and played the first 77 minutes. Game not broadcast. Match report said Bill was "a little timid" in play but was technically good.

Looking at the lineup for OM it was definitely a 1st team reserves plus a few 2nd team additions.

Bill played a full 90 at DM for the Marseille reserves in the weekend.....they won 5-2

Big day for the first team. They beat Toulouse 2-0. That makes it 8 wins in a row and they top the table. Also the crowd of nearly 62,000 was a new record for the club and for the stadium.

Very funny moment during the game....Beilsa watches the game sitting on a chilli-bin on the side line. Someone brings him coffee in a cup and puts it on the bin....Beilsa doesn't see the cup and sits on it....burns his arse.....very funny. Check it out on youtube

Bill not on the bench for the 2-1 away League Cup loss to Rennes:

http://int.soccerway.com/matches/2014/10/29/france...

Seems nearly all our best players overseas this year are struggling for playing time: Tuiloma joins Smith, Wood, Rojas, James, Bertos etc. who have been warming the bench or in the reserves mostly in recent months.

Bill was on the bench for the 2-1 home win vs. Lens yesterday morning NZT

http://int.soccerway.com/matches/2014/11/02/france...

Two Pacific Islanders from Oceania were involved in the game with Lens manager Antoine Kombouare being from New Caledonia.

Kombouare would be the highest profile club manager to ever come out of Oceania, having also managed PSG (2009-11), Strasbourg etc.

Won the Coupe de France as manager of PSG in 2010.

Played 283 games for Nantes and PSG in a 352 game pro career in Ligue 1, Switzerland and Scotland (Aberdeen).

Kombouare gained promotion for Lens from Ligue 2 last season in his first season in charge, having previously won Ligue 2 as manager of Valenciennes in 2006.

I fail to see what Smith, Wood, Rojas, James or Bertos would get out of laying on the bench. Tuiloma on the other must be learning heaps. I have no problem with him not getting regular game time given the environment he is in.

Marseille have a huge game against Paris this weekend. Marseille are league 1 leaders and PSG are second. They also have huge problems with injuries and suspensions. Last weekend they played their backup DM at RB and Bill was sitting on the bench as the only DM reserve. Romao...Marseilles most experianced DM was red carded so will miss the PSG game. Bill will almost certainly go to Paris for the match. He won't start but if there are injuries in the match he could very well make his League 1 debut.

What a match to make your debut.....the biggest game of the year, away to PSG in Le Classique. He would be marking a Paris midfield of Veratti, Cabaye and Matuidi......all current internationals.(game is 9 a.m NZT Monday morning)

Great to see Bill finally make his Ligue 1 debut. It is good reward for him after putting in 18 months of hard training. He has been really solid for the OM Reserve side recently so its not surprised to see him make his senior debut.(The Reserves are top of the table currently)

Bill came on with 5 minutes to go. He was a tactical sub after Lemina, playing DM was red carded for a punch. Beilsa pulled off the winger Ocampos and put Bill on to shore up the defense.

Bill looked mega nervous when he got the call to go on. He did OK when he got on even though it was near the end of the match. He barely touched the ball but defended well and his positional play was good.

Lemina will be suspended for at least one match. If the other DM, Romao is still injured then there is a chance Bill might start the next match. So he could make his starting debut in front of 50,000 at the Veledrome in Marseille.....which would be quite amazing. Hard to say if Beilsa see's Bill as starting material at DM......he might move a CD forward to get someone with more experiance there.

Its really important for Bill to get noticed. His contact expires at the end of this season. Unless he is seen to be potential first team, he will not get re-signed

That is just insane.......if we had Boyd and Thomas out wide with Rufer, Ridenton and Tuiloma central we would be on fire at the WC. Can't we get some new birth certificates drawn up? LOL  its been done before in age group competitions around the globe
