Welcome to the Degà, @charles_spragg

Here’s something different. NZ youth international and Eastern Suburbs prospect Charles Spragg has leapt on into the professional ranks in lovely Catalonia after signing a first team contract with Palamós CF – who compete in the fourth tier of Spanish football. The club was founded all the way back in 1898 and was a second tier club for six solid years in the early nineties though is pretty stable amidst the vastness of that Tercera division these days – the fourth tier (it goes Primera (aka La Liga), Segunda, Segunda B, and then Tercera) features 360 clubs split across 18 regionalised groups.

So not the highest possible standard but along with getting to try establish himself in the Spanish footy pyramid, the 19 year old also now gets to live in a gorgeous coastal town in Catalonia. Whilst playing football for a living. Palamós began this season just hoping to stay in this division but a few early wins have them dreaming of something a little tastier than that. Not sure how long Spragg’s contract is for but it comes after a successful trial period. And while there’s a fair bit of competition for the attacking spots on this team he should be straight in with the first team so that’s sweet.

Worthy of his own thread.

Soccerway actually has Spragg's club Palamós, playing way down in the Spanish 5th tier (not 4th tier), with a huge array of regional leagues.

https://us.soccerway.com/teams/spain/palamos-cf/2116/

Though do note the Girona II side (40 points) is top of their league. Palamós is third (26 points).

No idea how Spragg is going. Soccerway don't provide stats that far down the charts.

Still he's playing 'pro' football in a beautiful part of the world, and hopefully being noticed by someone.

Didn't Archie Thompson play and score in the 4th division in Spain?

Did a bit of digging on this one and he's only made one appearance off the bench for a total of 14 minutes so far this season.

Came on in the 2-0 loss to Girona on Gameday 14. His squad number is 24 by the way, so his name is not even listed on the substitutes bench, only the number.

5 substitutions per side allowed per match too. Not too sure he's going to get too much exposure, especially at that level, but I suppose it's a nice part of the world for him to live in and experience the culture at least.

In 5th Div, as a 40 year old.

Racing Murcia

On 20 August 2019, Thompson signed a contract for fifth division Spanish side Racing Murcia.[8] The club has high ambitions as they aim for promotion to La Liga, the top division in Spain, within five years.[9] Thompson made his debut on 2 September 2019 coming on as a substitute in the 64th minute against Abarán CF.[10] In a video documenting the progress of the club uploaded to SBS' The World Game, it was announced that Thompson had left the club and returned home to Australia.[11]

Article on Charles Spragg the first New Zealand player to play for Palamós CF making his debut for the club.

Full article ?: https://www.diaridegirona.cat/esports/2020/01/02/charles-spragg-jugador-nova-zelanda/1021647.html

Translation from ??: ”He made his debut for Riudarenes in a derby against Girona B and later debuted at home against Tona. New Zealand striker Charles Spragg already knows what it means to defend the dean's shirt and in this way he has become the first player of this nationality to play with the Palamós. Spragg has been international for his country in the Sub17 and Sub18 categories and reached the Costa Brava in late September from the Eastern Suburbs of the New Zealand city of Auckland. Joan Marmol's team opens the third in 2020, 5 points from the promotion promotion, which occupies the Vic. More utopian seems to be catching the attractive Girona B leader, just 14 points away.

Premier Catalan league suspended due to Covid-19 with no promotion or relegation. Palamos was one point away from promotion when league was suspended & if promoted would play Barcelona B next season. Spragg played the last 4 games with Palamos winning 2 & drawing 2 games

On checking the website, named as sub 6 times with only 26 minutes from 5 appearances off the bench.
