This all shows how fickle my EPL affiliations are. I used to be a Blackburn fan cos Ryan played for them... enemies: Burnley.
Now I follow Burnley cos of Wood...

If he had missed it, would he have been given a penalty? The defender absolutely clatters him.

Burnley will disagree with you on that one. I think he's good enough to be a decent striker for a lower end premier league club.

Premier League clubs buy players who are not good enough for the top flight regularly.

He will get on the end of a few balls in and score a few, but ultimately don't think he is cut out technically for that level.

Also worth noting he is the same striker as Vokes, so offers nothing different to him up top, and is probably a lesser striker.

True, you would know more than Burnley about his skills. They just spent a record fee on a player who isn't good enough for the league they play on. Silly them.

We'll see in 6 months time. Fancy a wager on how many he'll score then pal? You sound confident.

Burnley had 20 shots on goal v WBA and missed with all of them. This has not gone unnoticed. Wood will get game time next week v Spurs for sure.

First Kiwi to score at Wembley?

Snap

Apparently Chris Killen has scored two at Wembley playing for Celtic in an Invitational Tournament in 2009 called the Wembley Cup which included Barcelona Spurs and a Middle Eastern Team. Tournament was only held the once despite crowds of 55k and 64k

He did make a mess of two previous chances just beforehand that a striker with more foresight and positioning would have taken. One weak header that he didn't position himself for right, and a volley that he didn't position himself for right and the ball ended up going backwards. Really happy for him and I definitely think he's good enough for the Premier League, but we can't have him making too many meals of chances or Vokes will continue starting. Goal was an absolute peach though

Wood gets to go from Wembley to Lawson Tama in just over a week. Football is the best.

What's night and day is how much more supportive the Burnley fan base is compared to Leeds.

He nodded down the header to Brady who then put in that through ball and Wood executed that brilliantly. Beautifuk stuff.

A bit over critical don't you think? Considering he was a second half substitute to get in that many goal scoring positions to begin with, to me, shows he has what it takes to be a top-level striker. Harry Kane made a mess of a number of chances too (including a 1 on 1).

Didn't see the game, but to me this is brilliant news and well deserved.

https://www.foxsports.com.au/football/premier-league/tottenham-v-burnley-video-highlights-wembley-curse-continues-for-spurs-dropping-points-late/news-story/08cc4fe0601781a478c3b21582be1cbd

One swallow doesn't make a summer, but scoring in the 92 min, in front of 68,000 fans, at the home of English football, with all the pressure of a big money move, chasing his EPL dream - boys own stuff.

Whatever else happens in his career (and not staying he will be a long term success as a premier league striker) - he will never forget that goal. He's a proud Kiwi, who's family sacrificed a lot when he went to England as a youngster - congrats to them.

Went to that Tourney and vaguely remember him scoring.  8 years ago, a long time.

I love him like any Kiwi fan should, but sadly he really could have done better :( Burnley seemed to use him as a target man in the final few minutes when he had tons of chances, so he didn't have to do much to actually put himself in a good position, someone like Kane would have had a really good go at it on a good day. Good point you have with Kane but anyone can have a bad day, I think that at the Confeds + a little bit at Leeds, Wood's shown that he's not the most clinical of converters and makes many hashes of good chances, and it's come through a little bit in this game. I sincerely hope I'm completely wrong though, if Wood could put a little work into this problem area he could be a gem for Burnley. If not, Vokes is ready to pounce, he certainly doesn't want to be displaced by a brand spanking new 15mil pounder

If every striker netted every chance or half-chance that came their way, football would be a fairly batshark game.

He's been with the squad for what? 1 week? He's still building familiarity with his teammates and the system, hence lots of offside runs.

Apparently yes. Previous 11 games were all off the bench.

And scores!!

Edit: Latches on to a poor back pass after 4min, deft finished past the keeper from about 30 yards.

Having watched both Vokes and Wood play many times now, I can safely say that Wood is a much better player. He is far more mobile; stronger, taller, quicker, better stamina and even has a better first touch believe it or not.. Vokes looked exhausted after 60 minutes v Palace whereas Wood still looked fresh and agile, despite putting in similar workloads. Wood is also a better finisher than Vokes.. clearly Sean Dyche sees Wood as an upgrade to Vokes as well, otherwise he wouldn't have shelled out a club record signing to get Wood.

Obviously Wood has a long way to go, but he is still young and his best years and full potential are yet to be realised.

Very nice info from BBC Football today:

◾Chris Wood is just the second player from Oceania to score in their first start in the Premier League - the other was Brett Emerton in August 2003 for Blackburn against Wolves.
◾Wood's strike was scored just 169 seconds into the match, Burnley's fastest Premier League goal since November 2016, also against Palace - Sam Vokes firing the Clarets ahead 78 seconds into that match.
◾Wood is the first Burnley player to score in both of his first two Premier League appearances for the club.
◾Wood became just the sixth player from New Zealand to start a Premier League match, after Ryan Nelsen, Winston Reid, Simon Elliott, Danny Hay and Lee Norfolk.

Also the first (or maybe second I can't quite remember) Burnley player to score a hat-trick at international level and the 6th Burnley player to score at Wembley

Yes a striker from little ole NZ, scoring freely (well 2 goals from 1.5 games) in the world's most high profile football league. This really is big news. Gives a glimmer of hope for those big AWs games in November.
