Cornet is away for the next month for the African Nations cup which will not help Burnley. Interestingly, considering Wood is the striker, Wood seems more likely to assist Cornet than the other way around. As he wins headers from the long ball and Cornet runs onto them; it's actually how they won the freekick that lead to Cornet's goal.

Burnley has an old squad and clearly lack pace, so Cornet makes a difference there... Cornet is the only one who seems to have lots of energy and capable of something special amongst the Burnley team.

Burnley's midfield and crossing has been rubbish this season which isn't helping Wood who is looking increasingly out of confidence.

As mentioned above, the 2 matches against Watford are already shaping as crucial to staying up. I don't think they have announced the date yet for the rescheduled (due to Covid) match, let's hope it doesn't clash with the All Whites WC qualifiers or the club vs country thing will be more of an issue...

Think is no chance now Wood will be released by Dyche for any AWs games outside Jan and March FIFA windows.

Huge chance Burnley will go down. What do you think will happen to Woodsy? Go down with them or transfer to another Prem club?

he'd be hoping to score a decent contract with another prem club, surely? He's 30 now so maybe 5 years left to earn himself some really decent coin before taking whatever he can.

Wood named in the starting 11 for the FA cup match vs Huddersfield starting in 30 minutes.

Unfortunately SKY has the rights to FA Cup matches (not Spark) and they don't seem to be showing it.

Yeah odd that Woodsman was subbed at HT. Injured?

Huddersfield's (6th in the Championship) keeper came off at 40 mins, and on came young 19 yr old Aussie Nicholas Bilokapic as reserve keeper.

Probably not a bad thing Clarets are out of FA Cup, as they deal with a congested schedule and a relegation scrap.

The keeper coming off at 40 mins (who was already their 2nd choice keeper!) was a result of a collision with Wood, so it's possible Wood got hurt in that same inpact. He didn't look injured though (I was watching on a dodgy stream) and stayed on the field until half time if that was the cause.

Interesting... maybe not the best for the All Whites though; Burnely/Dyche seem to have a pretty good attitude with releasing international players (even if not required to). Apparently he also has a groin strain though, which may make Newcastle more hesitant.

Newcastle talking it up, but would be surprised if Burnley let him go to a fellow relegation rival at this stage of the season. Only way to sway it would probably be a massive transfer fee Burnley's way which would allow them to pick up someone quality before the window shuts.

As pointed out earlier, it would likely cock up plans to be released for AW's WCQ.

Some Burnley fans maybe feeling less Woodsman love, but I'd agrue without him they are much more likely to go down, than with him.

But if he goes to Magpies doubt it changes his AWs availability status one bit. Neither club will release him this season outside FIFA windows - not when they are both fighting desperately to avoid the drop.

Arguably Burnley's best player (Cornet) is away for nearly a month for the African Nations Cup; did they have to release him? (genuine question, I don't understand the international windows, but assume it's not for that long). Even if it's a FIFA window I know Watford has been accused of refusing to release their Senegal player so at least Burnley wasn't caught up in the same for Cornet (who has also had injury issues) who could of pulled the same card.

Euro clubs have to release players for African Nations Cup (9 January – 6 February 2022). Crazy amount of mid season time really, that players are unavailable for their clubs.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_International_Match_Calendar

Though the clubs got date of player release pushed back until 3rd Jan (previously was 27th Dec).

Interesting side issue.
"African nations have been frustrated during the pandemic when countries have imposed quarantine requirements on return that prevent players featuring for their countries without missing club matches."

Burnley fans won't be happy. "Leaving them in their hour of need" so to speak, especially for a rival. If both get relegated would that be Karma rewarded? I hope Burnley stay up.

Interesting move if it goes through. Big payrise presumably so you can see why he'd go for it. But it seems likely that if Newcastle stay up there will be some huge investments on the horizon, probably for far bigger fish than Wood, so he could end up on the bench. Alternatively if they go down he'll be playing in the Championship next season. Bit of a gamble, although if he thinks Burnley are going down regardless then there's nothing to lose. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Seems to be good for all parties.
Newcastle get a striker that they desperately need.
Wood gets a payrise, become part of a team that will invest hugely and plays in front of 50000 fans.
Burnly get a sold amount of cash when they are probably are probably a 90% chance of going down, and presumably there is some kind of release clause related to relegation.

Bit rough on a Burnley with Wood to say they are 90% likely for the drop. Sure they have been struggling but they have also been in this position before.

Now by letting him go, almost seems yes they planning on relegation. I’m sure many Clarets fans won’t be happy, though they have had an EPL stint longer than many of them probably hoped.

I'm hearing a release clause somewhere in the £20-25 million range. Good deal for Newcastle for a proven prem striker with plenty of experience. Surely as a bonus it pretty much guarantees Burnley relegation.

I don't really see a downside for the Woodsman.
With or without him Burnley look a strong shout for relegation, and at 30 a contract with Newcastle could be his last good multi year deal and by the time they have invested more in to the squad he may well be of an age where he'd be more content being an impact player off the bench.

Power move buying the most proven striker of your biggest relegation rival though. Would be the equivalent of City buying Salah for an impossible-to-refuse sum, aka doing a Bayern Munich.

Well atm they have to match Newcastle's result for the rest of the season which seems unlikely if they bring in a bunch of players, or try catch Everton/Leeds who are 8 points head.

Yipe Clarets are a strong prospect of being relegated but it's too early to say that it's 90% certain, especially if they had kept the Woodsman.

They have 2 games in hand on Leeds & Magpies. 1 game in hand on Watford & Everton.

But losing Wood is massive blow to their chances of staying up. No Cornet for next month. Barnes long term injured.

See that Burnley are to host Newcastle last game of the season. Could be a frosty reception for Christopher.

If he goes there is still a chance Newcastle get relegated and Burnley stay up. Wood’s not in vintage touch- though a goal changes that.

Burnley have a better culture than Newcastle IMO, but Newcastle have some class players.

I guess Wood would be deputising for Wilson?

Also practically, at the moment J Rod or Vydra are a slight step down but not much. It’s a betrayal, yes and for morally questionable owners, but that’s most of the league snd certainly the shirt sponsors.

Seems a lot of the English fans are very 50/50 on this transfer. My only concern is how he'll play in a different system as Burnley has a very clear system that Wood fits in really well and has been playing for years so will be interesting to see how they use him and if he adjusts to it well.

I think he’ll go well. Should get better service from Trippier and co

Plus a tonne of experience in the UK, and I presume Leeds had a different system to Burnley, where he couldn’t stop scoring a tier down

Fresh challenge and maybe he needs that after a few years at Burnley around basically same players and coach

Good luck understanding the Geordie locals

Yeh my feeling is that the system hasn’t been suiting him or Burnley quite as well this year. No Barnes. The defense not as impregnable. Bits and pieces of luck. Players not quite finding form.
He’s got more in his locker than he’s shown- it would be great to see it at Newcastle.
I’ll be a bit worried if the whole plan is Trippier crosses, but I don’t think it is.

Apparently this is the third time Newcastle has tried to sign him over his career, so they obviously rate him more than just an opportunistic way to get a striker and weaken a rival.
