Woodsman converts a pen, and Magpies win 1-0. His 5th of the season (1st pen). He'll need 5 goals from 7 games to make it a 5th consecutive 10 goals or more, EPL season.

He drew the pen, which went to VAR and was reviewed by Jarrod Gillett! Pen action and goal from about 12 mins in the video below.

Newcastle (14th) looking pretty safe now, 10 points clear of Burnley (18th), though Clarets have 2 games in hand.

Could be that last game (22nd May, Burnley verus Newcastle) of the season at Turf Moor is must win for Burnley in their relegation battle with Everton (17th), but Newcastle are already safe by then.

Good to see him on the scoresheet after having an earlier one ruled out for offside. Given his barren-ish run before now I was a little surprised he was the penalty taker tbh.

He earned the pen, and his pen conversion rate is top drawer. I think maybe around 95% or something

I’d say he’s currently Newcastle’s designated pen taker when on the park

Plus he needs goals for his confidence as some pressure on him to be scoring more as the main striker. No brainer he took it

I hunted high and low for it too to reference here. It seems you can actually get rid of stuff off the net permanently if Google, Apple, Meta, Microsoft etc actually care.

And it costs places to have a large database of back issues, so natural erosion doesn’t help too.

I guess others know more about web snapshots. I recently used the National Library to find a snapshot of an old website profile belonging to a friend who’d passed away.

And as search engines become more gamed and narrow it gets more difficult to recover things.

Probably done by the PL- they’ve got to have some decent resources and they are very dedicated to protecting their brand.

From the Guardian’s Football weekly podcast:

‘…as she was slowly coming to the end of her life I was giving her score updates from the game.
She’s always been a fighter and managed to hang on through what, by all accounts was one of the dullest halves in football history and the last smile that came to her face was when I told her that Chris Wood had scored….I will forever be grateful for that last smile that football gave her.’

From this week's Flying Kiwis.

Incredible stat: Chris Wood hasn’t missed a penalty for club or country for six years. 18 consecutive goals from the spot and that’s not including shootout successes either. If you chuck those bad boys in then the streak is up to 24 spotties in a row.

Some stat that, I take it all back. Although now I'm most surprised that he has been involved in 6 penalty shootouts!

Newcastle up to 11th. 15 points now clear of Burnley (18th) in the drop zone. In highlights he only has one clear chance, but was offside anyway.

Joelinton started in the centre of a front 3, with Saint-Maximin moving centre and Joelinton bumped out left where he’s picked up two first half goals so far! Seems like rotation or horses for courses, but does put pressure on Wood.

Easy 3-0 win for Newcastle. They go up to 9th, and only 11 pts off Man U and European football.
https://highlightsfootball.net/video/norwich-city-vs-newcastle-united-highlights-3/

Wood an unused sub. He might well finish the season on the bench. Howe has been praising him, but he just hasn't had the scoring success this season, compared to prior. 5 to date (2 NU & 3 Clarets)

Though Magpies have a tough finish to their campaign now. No more Norwichs - esp if Clarets have everything riding on their last game.
Liverpool (H), Man City (A), Arsenal (H) & Burnley (A).

Considering Burnley will likely need points in the last match to avoid the drop, that could be an interesting/weird game for Wood if he plays. Imagine if he scored the goal away at Turf Moor to consign them to relegation!

Rotation I think, the previous game was only 3 days before and he had played the full 90. It's going to be hard for him to get back in now though after his replacement scores 2.

If I was him I'd ask Eddie Howe to be benched for that game. It's a no win situation for the Woodsman. Might as well have a week off to get ready for the AWs camp.

Then post the Playoff game, he'll go into a proper pre season sometime July to push his Newcastle case for season 2022/23.

And yeah Clarets since sacking Dyche seem revitalised.

Newcastle's next four games hold the eventual fate of their opponents in their hands: Liverpool or Man City for the League title, Arsenal in the Champions League and Burnley for the drop?

I don’t think Wood has synched completely with his attacking teammates. Joelinton and Shelvey have put him through or put the ball on his head. The others seem to use him to distract defenders so they can go themselves. Just a feeling watching the game. He’s not a player who’s going to pick up the ball on the counter, burn players with pace and dribbling which a lot of the others are being wide forwards by trade.

Flying Kiwis.

"Chris Wood was left out of the team for the weekend’s match with Norwich. Not dropped, to be clear. He was one of four changes from the Palace match with in-form regulars Fabian Schär and Jonjo Shelvey amongst them. Miguel Almiron was also rotated despite his goal in the previous match. Just one of those ones where the fixture congestion has been real rough and with their relegation worries deep in the rear-view mirror Eddie Howe can afford to rest a few blokes here and there.

Eddie Howe on the changes: “Three games in six days. Norwich had a free week so we couldn’t come here lethargic, tired or mentally fatigued after the week we had - two tough home games where we had long spells without the ball. We needed fresh bodies, one or two players had a few niggles as well so we didn’t want to risk them. I was really pleased with the guys that came in. I thought they did refresh the team and thought we looked very good physically today for certain points in the game. Also, I think it’s healthy for the group to do that as well, it shows we do have a capable squad and that I’ve got options to choose from, plus competition for places as well which is absolutely vital.”

Makes sense. Only drama is that this was a great chance for Chris Wood to add to his goal tally and give himself a little more hope of reaching that 10-goal mark for the season. He’s on five goals with four matches left so probably not gonna happen, especially not with Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Burnley to face in those four games. Might need to score them all against the Clarets which may be awkward.

Newcastle beat Norwich 3-0 with Joelinton scoring a double (35’ & 41’) and Bruno Guimaraes adding another (49’) as the semi-rotated Magpies saw off the relegation-looming Canaries with relative comfort. Amazingly, considering where they were a few months ago, that win lifts Newcastle into the top half of the table.

Up Next: Newcastle vs Liverpool, Saturday at 11.30pm (NZT)"

Imo they’re really missing Wood. Liverpool have needled the crap out of Joelinton and minimised his threat. The other players are struggling to link their attack together and deal with the physicality from the Liverpool midfield. Wood linking the play and holding off defenders would be handy imo.
It’s odd, it feels like Liverpool are counter attacking quite a bit despite being the dominant side.

Finished a 1-0 win to Liverpool. Newcastle 9th with 3 games left.

It's all Liverpool in the highlights. Wood with that one chance late on, but he strays offside.
https://highlightsfootball.net/video/newcastle-united-vs-liverpool-highlights-4/

Elsewhere Burnley (up to 16th, 34 pts) win 2-1 at Watford. Clarets now 5 points clear of the drop zone (Everton, 29 pts) but Toffies do have 2 games in hand, but look in trouble with Chelsea & Leicester their next opponents.

I'm sure Wood will be happy for his ex team mates at the Clarets. Turns out sacking Dyche was the clean slate they needed.
