No minutes again against one of the weaker teams, that fairly much sat back and defended for the whole game. Hope his luck changes soon. Wilson did well with his chance, but not his best game.

He'll get game time, but with Wilson back from injury he'll need to wait.

He came on at 89 minutes and got about 4 minutes game time. Did anyone see Wilson’s goal? Amazing.

thought F. Schär's goal was the better of the two, Wilson's one was a good piece of inter play after a good midfield defensive block.......
the Woodsman is gonna have to take his chances to push for a starting spot.

Half-time. Tougher examination for the Magpies this week, especially in the midfield. Both sides have had their chances, though Brighton perhaps one or two too many for Eddie Howe’s liking. The first half has made it look very much like a game that will be decided by an error or a piece of individual brilliance.
Neither side has really had their finishing boots. Have to unfortunately agree with Coochie, in that Wood is less likely to be an impact sub, and more a Wilson is exhausted/crocked replacement.

I think if they prefer this style of football they’ll be looking for a more mobile, nippier 9 to be a point of difference. In many ways Wilson and Wood are similar and the former has the gaffer’s confidence.

Stays 0-0. Individual brilliance provided by sub Mitoma on the left wing, having Trippier for dinner, but Brighton can’t finish and Newcastle hang on.
Wood gets less than ten minutes at the end, as Wilson is totally gassed in the hot sun and also having a lot of chat with the ref. Doesn’t have much to do.
Second half entirely Brighton.

De facto Newcastle thread sorry- but they’ve been exhilarating! It’s stuffed me a bit in FF, but happy to see it. Actually Wilson missed a good chance. But the the one he scored in combination with Saint-Maximin was brilliant. 2-1 Newcastle at HT, with both Toon CB on yellows already, plus a yellow fur Guimaraes for good measure. Jared Gillet doing a decent job with the whistle thus far.

Gets through a power of defensive work. Doesn’t get a sniff of a sniff anywhere near the goal. Finishes 3-3.
Need a little more impact off the bench. Can’t help but think Cornet would have been better here than at West Ham.
Newcastle throw their hat in the ring as a club on the make, along with Brighton, Wolves and maybe even Leeds.

There was a disagreement with Saint-Maximin and words when Maximin shot into 3 defenders rather than pass. Feel he has to get blind drunk with the dude or some such equivalent and work it out if he wants to be in the goals. Maximin died with the ball 3 times in the front third out on the left without threatening a strike or getting it in the box.
It seemed like Howe was going to drag Maximin, but at the last minute he didn’t and then there was a bit of a tactical shift. Wood was playing deeper, defending and playing passes from the top of the box and holding the ball. Fairly usefully. But tbf most of the time he was on was Newcastle defending their draw.

Can see that Howe wants to use Wood, but is not quite sure how to get the best out of him. Murphy was ineffectual in providing service off the bench. Willock impressed me today, but that starting team were all fired up and St. James’ park was roaring.

Go get dreads, go to the dog track, whatever- but he laid on a beautiful goal for Wilson and had a great game where ripped through City. Didn’t wanna pass to Woodzee. That’s a problem for Wood.

You know how Newcastle just signed Pedro a striker from Watford?.....And like you know like how Chris Wood was probably gonna be struggling for meaningful minutes as it was before that?..... And you know how like Uffie said they are in the market for a tall striker?....And you know how like he'll be around this part of the world for the international window anyway just before the start of the A-League season....I mean I know it'd be pretty out the gate but.... Loan spell at the Nix just for sharks and gigs?

From Flying Kiwis.

Also, word on the street is that Newcastle are on the verge of signing João Pedro, a 20yo Brazilian forward currently at Watford. Don’t worry too much about that. Newcastle’s plan has always been to sign a young striker capable of playing out wide in the hopes of adding some versatility as well as a player who can develop down the line (they wanted Hugo Ekitike but he signed with PSG instead). This move seems to fit that mould exactly.

João Pedro will not be seen as an immediate rival to Wilson/Wood and you can be damn sure that João Pedro is not the bloke that Eddie Howe is gonna turn to with twenty to play against Man City when seeking to hold onto a 3-3 draw.

Saint-Maximin - What a find. he is the sort of player you pay your money to go and see. I think Newcastle is exactly the sort of club where his abilities will flourish and be allowed to do what he wants. Great for fans and the team. Sets up a lot of opportunities.

Hope you feel better soon. Yeah I'm really hoping Wood is given a start. After being behind Wilson for the first few matches so far and possibly this Pedro guy on the way, I think he deserves it, plus Newcastle will be heavy favourites so it might be an easy way for Wood to grab himself a couple of goals.

Why does Tranmere sound so familiar to me? I feel like there was a Kingz/Knights/Phoenix connection at some point, but can't pinpoint who it is I'm thinking of.

Wood scores from a corner to put Newcastle 2-1 up. It also looks like Newcastle could be signing young Swedish striker Alexander Isak so that will put Wood further down the pecking order.

Yeah I came in here to post that exact news.

Isak signing will pretty much resign Wood to a bit part role at best, although Wilson’s poor injury record could at least leave the door slightly open for him.

Yeah I feel Woods involvement will likely be as a sub in the last 15 of EPL matches, or in these cup matches for a full 90 so hopefully they can stay in as long as possible.

He needs to score goals. Do that in the cup and he will get a chance in the PL. Up to him to take it.

Just because someone is signed doesn't mean they will be successful... lots of strikers come in and disappear pretty quickly.

good looking set piece, did all he needed to do to shake off his defender and after that there is no stopping the shot. Assuming he played ok given he got the full 90?

Unbelievable how much grappling was allowed at corners. The attackers literally had to wrestle their way free. Woodsy did well to find a free moment.

Apparently Wilson is injured so there could be more action for Wood in the short term. The rumors is that Wilson's injury is more serious than previously though  and that's why they've rushed through the Isak deal. Seventy million seems to be the number thrown around which sounds way to much for Isak.

As a West Brom fan, if Newcastle sign Isak I’d really, really like to see Wood return for a loan spell. Obviously it would be a drop back down to the Champ for him but he’d be a nailed on starter every week in a team that could realistically win the league. Albion have all the pieces to be a force this year but with Dike injured are crying out for a proven goal scorer that can just finish the chances.

Doubt it would ever happen but I feel like it would be a good deal for everyone involved.

As long as Wilson is injury prone (got a hamstring injury), I doubt Newcastle will be letting Wood go anywhere.

Isak is quality but will take him time to settle in Geordie land. And sounds like if Newcastle sign Isak, they will then bypass João Pedro, ie it's one or the other not both.

The biggest thing for me from the Tranmere game is getting some combinations with Trippier and Willock. The goal assisted by Trippier and he put Willock through with a chance. If the starting players trust him and get to understand his game then he will have more chances to do well and get some goals laid on for him. I’m sure Howe anticipated more from a Trippier/Wood attack than we’ve seen.

Isak’s arrival would represent a big relief for Howe, who could be without the injury-prone Wilson for a few weeks and has only the less than prolific Chris Wood as natural central attacking cover. Ashworth’s pursuit of Isak signals the end of Newcastle’s interest in the Watford forward João Pedro but Howe remains anxious to make a midfielder his final signing of the window.

The manager and his Saudi Arabian overlords are keen for the team to begin closing the gap on the Premier League’s leading sides and Howe and Ashworth are exploring the possibility of securing either England’s Conor Gallagher or the United States international Christian Pulisic on loan from Chelsea. Gallagher, who spent last season on loan at Crystal Palace, is also wanted by Everton and West Ham.

Will Woodsie get a start? I think he’s a less mobile striker than Wilson, but if he gets his mojo going, he’s plenty mobile enough. Netted against Tranmere and the highlights package made a big deal about him not converting a tricky one on one, but he still was good enough.

Hanging in there for his breakout game in which he endears himself to larger proportions of the fan group and scores for fun.

Has been a more consistent striker in the past, but needs consistent service as well.
