Okay so it's fine to have English Tommy Smith but not okay for Andrew Durante? I'm sure Tommy would have played for England had he been good enough ..oh and Reid for Belguim ..it's probably embarrasing they call Danny Hay a former All White at the bottom of this.

He didn't play when Smith got named there. I'd say Reid is the more obvious selection. Even Chris Wood, someone who is going to be the first name on the team sheet over the next five years.
My heart melts every time I see Wood.
I think we're not in as bad a position as some may say, the only big problem facing the team is that gaping hole in the midfield and Wood alone can't make up for it pounding away at the front.
he came across as a real plonker on radio sport with herbert. TBH though reid is probably the best choice. id rather tommy just focused on his game. and well reid is playing at the highest level

Yeah, he is obviously considered a very good leader at West Ham, but how does that mean that he is instantly a better leader than Smith? Until I see more of the two of them on the field together without Nelsen, I think it's impossible to compare the two without knowing them personally and seeing them around the other AWs in camp.
Smith has captained Ipswich as much as Reid has captained West Ham.
Either way, Hay's reasoning for choosing Reid because he chose NZ over Belgium is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever read.

Apparently in some sports, if you are the captain but on a particular day someone else is captain and you are still playing (and shag a super model) you are still the captain and get fined. True story bro.

Six points clear of the drop, there's a good chance they will stay up. Not that it is relevant at all.
I don't think it matters where they play their club football and at the moment it's not too bad because Tommy Smith is a sure starter, but if we get another good CB then he could be on the bench with Reid starting. Therefore, Reid should get it long term.

Agreed. As a hypothetical, say Durante had lived in NZ all his life, and was playing with the kind of consistent form he showed before this season, would people be happy with him being captain? I would guess that a lot of people would be and wouldn't be too concerned that he was playing in a lower-quality league than some of the European-based players.

Herbert, who has coached the Phoenix since their inception in 2007, has talked about a "blip year" and a "three-to-five-year plan". That didn't wash with Hay, who said the club's loyal fans deserved better.
"That's not good enough because in one breath you're trying to encourage fans to come through the gate and then in the other, well, you're going to have to endure crap football for the next three or five years.
"With some ambition and fresh ideas, things could actually be turned around pretty quickly," he said.
Hay said the club's senior players also needed to shoulder some blame but Herbert, the league's longest serving coach, had run out of ideas.
"As a player you can become stale," said the former defender who played in the English Premier League with Leeds United.
"It's like anything in life, if you eat boiled chicken every night, it's going to get pretty dull. They look directionless and rudderless.
"They've gone ragged now and there's not a huge amount of tactical awareness or structure."
