Had an inkling that with Just missing today's Helsingor game, something might be happening.

Nice move if true. This is his 4th season now in Denmark? Time to have a crack at the Superliga.

Hopefully McCowatt can find a spot at the next level as well in this transfer window, as already looks like Helsingor are going to struggle to be promoted this season. Sounds like they are either selling, or have already sold some of their better players.

Just signing for Horsens is confirmed.
Great move for him, to test himself at the highest level in Denmark, after 3-4 seasons at Helsingor.

3 Kiwis in the Danish Superliga. Good stuff. Very early days (3 rounds in) but unbeaten Horsens actually sit 2nd (on GD)

Elijah Just has hurt AC Horsens in the past, and head coach Jens Berthel Askou is looking forward to benefiting from Just's qualities.

Excellent move. The Danish production line continues to work well for young, driven, aspirational Kiwi footballers.

Wonder what the fee to Helsingør would've been? Nice little windfall for them no doubt to cushion what has been a terrible start to their season.

From Flying Kiwis.

There it is. Elijah Just has signed with Horsens on a permanent basis with a contract that’ll run through until 2026. He will wear his trusty #27 jersey for his new team. Check out the quotes below and you’ll read that there was interest in him from several other clubs, including rival Superliga clubs, and that Horsens see him as an immediate help to their squad... albeit with the asterisk that it may take him some time to settle and adjust to a new team at a higher level.

As Just himself says: it was time. FCH had stalled and this opportunity was right there for him. Gotta do what you’ve gotta do. There’s even a ready-made spot there for him as attacker Casper Tengstedt is being sold to Rosenborg with Just seen as a direct replacement.

ACH sports director Niels Erik Søndergård: “Elijah Just had a terrific last season, where he really showed himself on an exuberant FC Helsingør team. He was one of the architects behind their great simple playing style. He fits very well into our strategy of bringing in young players with great development potential and we have no doubt that together we can turn him into a skilled Superliga player in a short time.”

ACH head coach Jens Berthel Askou: “We wanted to add another wide offensive player to strengthen the squad. Elijah Just, despite being only 22 years old, has been a big player for FC Helsingør and he has great untapped potential. He is a senior national team player and has eye-catching qualities. He can hurt the opponent in both small and large spaces, he finishes well with both feet, and he can attack his opponent in several ways. He is a very mobile, quick-thinking player who can give us even more dynamism. He will of course need time to get used to our way of playing and the intensity of the Superliga, but he is an exciting addition that fits well into our strategy. There has been a lot of interest in him - also from other Superliga clubs - so we are happy that he has chosen us because he can help us in both the short and long term.”

Elijah Just: “I am ready for a new and higher level in my career and it makes perfect sense to switch to AC Horsens. The club has a good staff and I really like the mentality of the players, which suits me very well. I was in Aalborg to watch the game yesterday and I saw a team desperate to keep that clean sheet above everything and it was actually quite inspiring.

I already felt like part of the team and I look forward to contributing with my qualities.
Of course, I have some work to do in terms of adapting to the playing style and getting to know my teammates but I will do everything to help the team as soon as possible.”

Of course this does leave Callum McCowatt a bit stranded. Often he and Just would find each other subbed in opposite directions at the same time so on a purely personal level this should mean a more consistent starting gig for him. But that’s assuming that he’s still there at the end of the transfer window which may very well not be the case.

They’ve also sold striker Tonni Adamsen to Silkeborg this week to go with a few other offseason departures and there’s every chance that McCowatt might be eyeing a way out himself. But we’ll have to wait and see how that goes.

Comes across as a humble and down to earth lad. Hopefully this move is the start of something special for him & his footballing career.

Nice to see the big long term contract too. 👏👏

Congrats to him with Superliga debut, after about 3-4 seasons in Denmark. Another showing the road for young Kiwi footballers.

I accidently clicked onto the bottom of page one of this thread just now, and there are some comments which show that three years is a long time. Stuff like the move to Helsingør was a bad move, and wasn't setting him up for a professional career. Also another one saying they'd prefer Just at the Phoenix over guys like Sotirio or Devlin, who, of course, ended up being quite decent. No shame in those takes, I'm sure everyone has similar, just interesting to see the process.

Midtjylland are a bunch of clowns at the moment. TWO GAMES IN A ROW, 3-0 up against a promoted team and drew.

Was some of the ugliest top-tier football I've sat through in a long time, Viborg took them apart and Horsens were lucky to score after throwing their CBs forward.

Eli's just about the only player on the team capable of trapping a ball - certainly the only player on the pitch for Horsens capable of unlocking a defense carrying the ball. Bit of a worry as the team's playstyle doesn't suit him at all; they were just woeful

Makes the most of an opponent slip up and delivers a peach of a ball to the edge of the 6 yard box. That'll help him feel like he belongs at this level.

Hopefully the first of many goal/assist contributions to come for Eli. 👏👏

Horsens aren't exactly known in Denmark for playing much football... kings of sharkhousery and their GK Matej Delac (ex-Chelsea) is among the best in his position in the league on his day.

Even in this game they only had 28% possession... not really a game style that suits Eli but if he can nail down a starting place, still a better place to be playing than 2nd-tier Helsingoer (big gap between the two tiers in DK).

Nordsjælland run out winners 2-0 quite easily. They're obviously having quite a good season and it's not easy travelling to the astro at the Right to Dream Park, but Horsens really didn't offer anything, they didn't even manage a shot all game.

Eli came on just after the penalty which made it 2-0, which gave him 21 minutes to try turn things around, but wasn't able to a lot. Carried the ball into space a couple times, but couldn't get a shot away or allow a teammate one. Any comeback was killed when James Gomez (who played for Gambia against the All Whites roughly this time last year) was sent off in the 77th. Bit funny as it was given as a second yellow, before a couple minutes of VAR review led to him being called out from the changing rooms to have the second yellow rescinded and replaced by a straight red. That meant Just was playing as a striker in a 4-3-2 and it wasn't great. A third Nordsjælland goal was also disallowed by VAR in added time for handball. There's, of course, a big step up in quality from 1. Division to Superligaen, but going from a team that was so dominant to one that can't manage a single shot isn't great for getting into form/confidence.

Also, Eli is hardly a guy with his best years behind him, but even still, at only 22, he was older than 12 of the 16 players used by Nordsjælland this morning. They're a club owned mostly by the Ghanaian-based Right to Dream academy, to provide a solid pathway into Europe for the best of the talent the academy produces. As a result they play many young players, both African and Scandinavian, and sell them on for big (in Danish terms) money if and when they're ready. In the last couple years they've sold players to Rennes (Kamaldeen Sulemana, Danish record fee of €20 million), to Ajax (Mohammed Kudus, €9 million), to Brighton (Simon Adingra, €8 million), and to Sampdoria (Mikkel Damsgaard, €7 million). The scorer of the penalty, Norwegian Andreas Schjelderup, could well be the next; having only turned 18 in June, he already has 53 Superligaen games and 15 goals under his belt. I suppose it’s a bit of a reality check as to where European/African talents stand against New Zealand talents.
