US Soccer designates the professional competitions into three tiers and at various times there have been multiple leagues designated at the same level. MLS is tier one, USL Championship is tier two, and USL League One and NISA are tier three.

NISA was initially affiliated to the now-defunct NASL which was a tier two league alongside USL Championship.

USL League Two is officially amateur and so does not have a designation.
