From this week's Flying Kiwis.

Congrats to Ashworth. Following a bit of a well trodden path now for young NZ footballers.

Pittsburgh actually finished top of USL Eastern Conference last season.

Chalk another one up for the USL crew. Hunter Ashworth, a NZ U20 World Cup starting centreback in at the 2017 World Cup, will be doing his thing for the Riverhounds in 2020... as soon as things get back to normality which might be a long while to be fair. But anyway, a one year contract with a club option for 2021, not a terrible place to end up after a four year college career split between the University of Santa Barbara (alongside Noah Billingsley) and the University of San Francisco. He joins Sam Brotherton as a contracted USL player from Aotearoa... though a few of those MLS dudes will spent plenty of time at this level too.

PR head coach Bob Lilley: “Hunter provides a physical presence who is strong in the tackle and very good in the air. He also is a very good passer out of the back and is comfortable with both feet.”

Just out of curiosity, is it common for players on scholarships to change teams/universities halfway through a degree like he did?

Happens all the time. Often they lose the full funding or the coach changes, but I have seen many move for varying reasons.

Not unusual in many sports. Most sports the scholarship is only for 1 year and its up to the coach to re-offer, so this is an opportunity for either to part ways. Sometimes the change is because of a change in academic direction, the new college might offer a degree that the former doesn't or has a superior academic depasrtment for that discipine.

exactly. In situations where the athlete is only going to college to further his sporting dreams, most prominently the NBA, university transfers happen almost as much as footy ones

Starting for Pittsburgh to make his pro football debut in the USL, verus Louisville City.

Louisville beaten USL grand finalists 2019, and winners in 2018 (against Musa's Phoenix Rising).

Ashworth with a early yellow.

Looks like the USL regular season has been shortened to 16 rounds - about half the normal. League split into 8 groups.

Full game in a 6-0 thrashing of Philadelphia Union II, in the USL.

I imagine the USL reserve teams of MLS sides are pretty weak at the moment.

Normally they would be strengthened by fringe MLS players dropping down frequently and playing for them, like for example Tuiloma has done often with his time in Portland.

But with all the MLS teams at that Orlando hub, and carrying large squads, those fringe MLS guys can't leave Florida and play in the USL.

Got announced today as signing for USL team San Diego Loyal, coached by USA legend Landon Donovan. He went straight into the starting lineup for today’s game against Tacoma Defiance, who are the affiliate club of MLS franchise Seattle Sounders, so had a quite young lineup. All USL matches are live-streamed on Youtube in New Zealand so I had a watch of the first half.

He played the first 45 (subbed at halftime, maybe match-fitness related) as the right side of a back three, and looked reasonably tidy, aside from a couple misjudgments where he gave the ball away. Seemed to be happy to play into midfield and pass forward, which is always a good sign. San Diego dominated and Tacoma looked dodgy, but managed to snatch a fluke deflection, just before halftime. Despite the domination, San Diego still lost 3-1, and are now on 0 points from their first three games.

Ashworth might be a bolter for the Olympics if he keeps playing though. He’s 1998-born, and has U17/20 World Cup experience, plus played the Olympic qualifiers and the 2 1-1 draws against Australia in 2019. He slips under the radar more than Stanger and Pijnaker, but they have only played 174 first-team minutes between them this season. Pijnaker being picked for the All Whites suggests Hay rated him higher than Ashworth, but a lot of water has gone under the bridge between November 2019 and July 2021. Olympic squads are tight (18 plus 3 travelling reserves) so Pijnaker’s ability to cover left back could help him, assuming Reid will start at centre back, but Ashworth is definitely not out of the race to go to Tokyo.

Yipe Mr Voerman had Ashworth in an article as a Tokyo contender. Could depend on if any of the 3 overage players end up being a CB. You would think at least one of Reid, M Boxall or Tuiloma will be picked (don't really see the point in taking Tommy Smith).

But if by chance all 3 were unavailable - then it could be three U24 CBs, which Ashworth would be right in contention to be part of.

Good to see he got picked up by another USL side. Mods please update his club. San Diego is a MLS expansion candidate apparently. Cheers

"Another addition to the USL Crew, get in there. Hunter Ashworth, a kiwi youth international at U17, U20 & U23 level (who grew up in the States), joining San Diego Loyal where his coach will be some bloke called Landon Donovan (you may have heard of him) who once upon a time won the Golden Ball at the 1999 U17 World Cup held in Aotearoa. Scored against New Zealand in the opening game in fact. So that’s cool.

Ashworth played for Pittsburg Riverhounds at the same level last year but only played four games and was released at the end of the year. The 23 year old therefore rocked up in San Diego and has done enough to earn a contract. Beautiful stuff. The Loyal were an expansion team in 2020 and are one of those USL teams with big intentions. They should have arguably made the playoffs in their inaugural season but missed out due to back to back forfeits – refusing to continue in one game after a racial slur against one player and then the next week after a homophobic slur against another. Landon Donovan’s not only the coach, he’s also the executive vice-president of soccer operations, a co-owner, and a co-founder. Busy man. He’s also a fan of Hunter Ashworth.

Landon Donovan: “Hunter has come in and proven that he wants to be an SD Loyal player. He competes extremely hard every day and represents the values of our club. We are thrilled to have him join our team.”

Hunter Ashworth: “I’m very proud to be a part of this club. Previously, from an outsider's perspective, it was a place any player would want to be. Now to be a part of it, I feel very blessed and am excited to give all I have for the team. I can’t wait to put the Loyal Kit on and see what it means to the people and city of San Diego. It’s an honour to have this opportunity to represent the badge.”

Ashworth went straight into the starting eleven for his club debut later on the same day on which he was signed, that one was away to Tacoma Defiance. But he was hooked at the half with his team down 1-0. They’d equalise soon after the resumption though ended up losing 3-1. That’s three losses from three for San Diego to kick off their year. Ah well.

Up Next: Louisville City, away on Sunday at 11.30am (NZT)

From Flying Kiwis.

Hunter Ashworth (San Diego Loyal) – Second behind Phoenix Rising in the Western Conference but Ashworth has had next to nothing to do with it. Signed for the Loyal in May and played three outta four halves in his first two games but has not been seen again since. He was an unused sub in a game a couple weeks after his last appearance and that’s it, not a sighting otherwise.
