Wouldn't he be our Number 1? With Moss at #2 now?

Marinovic has been playing because Hudson wants every member of the squad to get gametime. I don't think there's any doubt Moss is AW #1

Gleeson surely has to be among our top three goalkeepers.

Moss, Marinovic, Gleeson ..then the likes of Williams, Crocombe, Tzanev, Sail etc..

Intereting chat about keeps. Just to compare where everyone is playing.

Moss: 27 games – Australia 1st tier

Gleeson: 2 games – USA 1st tier

Williams: 9 games – Dutch 2nd tier

Marinovic: 29 games – German 4th tier

Crocombe: 24 games – England 5th tier

Kinda puts the depth of our keeping stocks (or lack of) in perspective.

saying that if you picked the side based upon recent performances (yes, I know there haven't been many), Stefan beats Moss every single time.

not worried tbh, all whites does something special to anyone who comes in to keep. Im not sure if its the lack of defence or the legacy of mark paston but a keeper can be crap for their club and become world class as soon as they put an all whites jersey on.

2 Kiwis ever gplayed in the same MLS game?  Nelsen/Elliott?

Going back 10+ years a go there were the likes of Wilkinson, Nelsen, Elliott, Lochhead, Oughton, Wilson and Brown playing in the MLS so the chances of them playing each other was decent.

Yeh it's odd. Do you think that Williams is a substantially different keeper than he was when he was playing for City in the ASBP?

Great point Martin.

Footballers are like tennis players, golfers etc ( the other global sports). Outside the truly elite level the base of the pyramid is very deep and there's not a huge degree of difference in quality. Take tennis for instance, outside the men's top 50 there are guys ranked 600-700 who often beat top 100 players if given a Wildcard into an ATP event.

Below the premier divisions there isn't a huge difference between players. It doesn't surprise me that ACFC players could step into second tier professional leagues in Europe (outside the top 5 countries). Look at even the Scottish Prem league for instance.

So Hudson, Ernie and co shouldn't dismiss local players just because they aren't professionals.

I think that the level a keeper plays at, especially a young keeper, is a lot less indicative of their skill level than it is for outfielders. For a start, they are a lot less likely to get games off the bench or chances to start as cover for injured or suspended players than outfielders are. A second choice keeper could go years without getting a game - look at Tony Warner: 120 consecutive games on the bench for Liverpool without a single first team appearance. There's no way an outfielder could have a record like that. So if a keeper wants to play first team games he might have to go to a much lower level than the equivalent outfielder.

Plus there's just less spots for keepers than other players. Take Marinovic - he's in the 4th tier in Germanny, so say there's roughly 60-80 starting keepers getting regular game time at a higher level than him in Germany. If we had a young CM who was in the position of only having 60-80 CMs playing at a higher level in Germany than him, he'd probably be in the second tier and and no one would be questioning the level he was playing at. Obviously that's not a perfect comparison, but I think it just shows how much harder it is for a young keeper to establish himself at a decent level.

those first two saves are exceptional. Nothing wrong with the finishing there (top corner drive and headed down into the corner).

Can someone post a clip of him managing to kick the ball over the half way line? As I haven't seen this yet.

I think Gleeson has the most potential of all our keeping options on his day I don't think any of the others could compete but he does seem to lack consistency would be interesting to see him really try and hold a starting spot at club level a weaker MLS side or one of the stronger Scandinavian leagues maybe even Belgium would be very interesting. You can make a decent career out of being a decent number 2 but it would be a lot better for us to see him test himself. Hopefully the carrot of a confed cup spot may do this fingers crossed we make it.

Maybe even to the Nix if/when one of Moss or Italiano goes. Would be a good backup to Glen and be a good contest between Gleeson and Mambo

I imagine there may be a MLS team or two interested in him. I could imagine someone trading a draft spot for him etc to get him.

Has he been in the US long enough to get a passport? Being classed as a visa player might be the only thing held against him.

Well done him. Now challenge is to play consistently well for the next few weeks whilst no 1 keeper is out injured.

Probably best Hudson leaves him out of his OFC Nations Cup squad, as this shapes as a crucial few weeks/months in Gleeson's career to date.

He's been in the MLS team of the week before IIRC, and then not heard from for another two or three years after that. Has to get a starting gig and prove consistency

agree, on the recent clips he has definately got the goods in terms of shot stopping. What is the rest of his game like? handling crosses/kicking/leadership etc?

Beaten at the near post is never great. I'd also say at fault for 2nd goal - however in defence from looking at the match highlights he was by far the busier of the 2 keepers, and made a number of good saves also

Yeh who'd be a keeper. Some really good saves, but the two goals don't look good at all.

Still, watching the defending for the first no defender goes to shut down the guy in the box, they just back off and leave him, and there are almost no Portland highlights on attack, so it is hard to put all the blame on Jake. If he hadn't made those mistakes he could have very much been the hero of a pinched game.

Can I just point out (once again) that conceding at the near post doesn't mean it's the keeper's fault. All has to do with their positioning and location of the striker.

goal keeping 101 - cover the near stick.
