They must see some promise in him. Well done McGarry. A mid table team in the Dutch top flight.

Imagine he’ll start in their youth/2nd team.

Top Left do you know much about Willem II?

"Willem II has strengthened with James McGarry. The 20-year-old left back from New Zealand has been training with the Tricolores since Saturday. He signs a contract for two seasons. In addition, the club has an option to extend the contract with two seasons.McGarry already passed the medical examination and the formalities were completed this morning.

Wellington Phoenix McGarry, who also has an Irish passport, transfers transference from Wellington Phoenix, an Australian club that plays in the Australian A-league and where McGarry has been playing since 2014. In 2016 he played for the first half of the season for Wellingon United, after which he returned to Wellington Phoenix.

In addition, he came out for the national teams New Zealand under 17 and under 20.Pleasant ambience"I feel like starting the competition," says James. 'The atmosphere at the club feels good, there is a good culture and everyone can get along well. The conversations with the trainers were positive and their understanding of the game suits me. "'Talented boy'Technical director Joris Mathijsen: 'We are very pleased with the arrival of James. He is a talented boy with a good mentality. This is a quality of players from Australia and New Zealand. We are glad that he chooses us to develop further in Europe. "

That's a terrific move. Irish passport would've helped.

I spent a working week in Tilburg about 15 years ago. Very quiet town. He won't find much to distract him long as he stays clear of the super strong beers. Bit like Lower Hutt.

"At the end of the drive the lawmen arrive...

I'll take my chance because luck is on my side or something...

Her name is Rio, she don't need to understand...

Oh Rio, Rio, hear them shout across the land..."

Sounds like at the moment, McGarry may not have much competition for left back role. Also short mention of Woud possibly joining him.

https://www.bd.nl/willem-ii/linksback-james-mcgarr...

The left back position was still meagre at Willem II. With the youthful Dylan Ryan, the Tilburg club had only a real left back.

Countryman Michael Woud is, if he comes through the medical examination, the third goalkeeper of Willem II.

On Woud's instagram story it showed his passport with the words 'on to a new adventure'.

James came on at half-time and played the whole second half in a home friendly for the first team vs. leading Belgian side Gent (fourth  last season) in a 1-1 draw:

Fellow Kiwi Michael Woud played the full 90 in goal.

Line-up: Woud, Dankerlui (60. Kok), Lewis (Van den Bogert), Heerkens (60. Ryan, 77. Lieftink), Abbel (45. McGarry), Lieftink (45. Saddiki), Llonch (45. Akkaynak), Crowley (60. Urbanski), Croux (60. Bogaers), Sol (60. Kristinsson), Abubakar (60. Coulibaly)

Getting some good minutes preseason.

Played 65 odd minutes in a 2-0 loss to Sparta Rotterdam & looks like he got a full 90 a couple of days later in a 1-0 loss to Belgian side KV Mechelen which was played behind closed doors.

Hopefully in the frame to make his Eredivisie debut in a couple of weeks when Willem II kick off their season at home to VVV Venlo.

Willem II has loaned in a 19yr old LB from Ecuador, so McGarry will have some competition for the starting spot.

Awesome to wake up and see that McGarry has made his debut in the Eredivisie against VVV, played 63 minutes before getting subbed off.

crazy, considering what happened with his minutes at the team he left

All power to him

As a huge nix fan who doesn't really watch Handy prem, this is baffling. If he's good enough to even start in an eredivisie game, surely he could've had literally all of Parkhouse's minutes

Annual finals disappointment enthusiast.

how he do?

I had a random Willem fan ask me about him on Twitter ages ago, I replied to him today and got told that he did very well & he liked his style and passing. So he can't have stunk up the joint. He was subbed off for a winger, so guessing that was due to them chasing the game rather than his performance.

Looked at the game stats, lloked like they dominated, but couldn't score!

Should have played him up front.

Seems he played left wing, rather than left back. Sent a message to someone that says he is a journalist covering Willem in his Twitter bio.

James starting again tonight against FC Groningen. Playing left wing, one unofficial formation I saw had him on the left in a front three but he’s covering a lot of ground getting back etc, I’d say a more traditional winger from what I’ve seen. Willem II up 1-0 at HT

subbed at 63. Solid game, didn’t see all of it due to a struggle with streams but from what I did see he looked good.

finished 1-0 to Willem II. James was replaced by a new player on debut. Not sure if that means he could make way for him in the xi eventually.

3-0 to Willem II at half time, the player that replaced McGarry in the starting line up has a brace but has picked up a yellow card.

5-0 up and they have used up all their subs, would have thought it would have been a great chance to give him another run.

Was a surprise that he got given an opportunity in the first game. Remeber that he is still young and has already made a massive step up, hope he contiunes to do well.

Wasn't the kid who replaced him the same age, from Central America? Hopefully he can earn it back soon.

2 goal starting debut... might take a while to get a start back. But so long as he can keep clocking up minutes even off the bench this season is a massive success for him.

nah he was replaced by Kosovo international Donis Avdijaj who to be fair is much much more established than McGarry. Considered one of the most promising youngsters in the world while he was at Schalke (had a 41 million pound release clause at 17), his career's stalled a bit at 21 but it's really no surprise McGarry's been benched by him tbh

On the pine with Woud, as Willem II (4th on table) visit last year's champs PSV (1st).

Hopefully they get to catch up with Thomas post game for a photo snap.

They could include Sainsbury as well as the token Aussie. He is on the bench for PSV.

Will be a nice moment if McGarry gets on at a packed Phillips Stadium.

PSV fans will be on a high qualifying for Champions League midweek, and then drawing some big name teams in their pool.

Sucks Thomas is injured.

Found and article stating James has a hamstring problem.

https://www.tilbo.com/koster-vasthouden-aan-onze-speelwijze/

On James McGarry, Dimitris Kolovos and the longer absent Karim Coulibaly and Jordens Peters after, Koster has a perfect selection. Koster: 'James has some problems with his hamstring and Dimitris has unfortunately had a backlash. '
