Aye? how does that work? the curtain raiser is played after the main game when [presumably] everyone has buggered off. Is that normal anyone?

depends. some reserve games are scheduled on their own date, some are played after the main match, to save on expenses and allow players on subs bench to get some game mins. (kinda complicated who is eligible for a reserve game) And each MLS team not having an affiliation with an USL team plays an USL team twice per season (and it counts towards USL league standings). most reserve games don't get much attendance, but teams like Portland draw a lot. I think RSL had 7000 for a reserve team match once.
as for the game itself, frustrating as hell. watching Toronto (and Columbus) is about pleasant as getting a BJ with sandpaper.
better game from yesterday was Seattle vs Dallas
