Hello from Canada.

Looks like Ryan Nelsen poached your star player Jeremy Brockie who is now on loan at Toronto FC.

I don't follow A League too closely, so can you guys give your thoughts on this guy? Cheers

Had a good year goal scoring, probably surprised many as he hasn't been a consistent scorer in the league previously.  Brilliant natural talent who can score some spectacular goals, however goes missing for long times in matches and can sometimes look a bit lost tactically as a striker (runs aren't that great).  I've always thought he really needed some good coaching - it really could go either way with him.  I'd definitely be gutted if he left us though, I think he's got loads to offer.

Big call. Good luck to him.

Grumpy old bastard alert

Wonder if he knows about it, as he was getting a tattoo of his new babies name on his arm yesterday.

Do the A-League and MLS seasons overlap?

If yes, what does this mean?

Finishes Oct 26, when does A League start?

Good move for him if it comes off

Not by much. October is a clash. Pretty sure he will be back before then.

I'd assume it's basically an extended trial for Brockie till about end of June, when European contracts expire. At that time Brockie will either have proven enough to keep around, in which case Wellington will collect a bit of transfer fee. Most MLS loan deals usually have a buy clause built into it. Or, Brockie will be released back to Wellington if he's not good enough.

Or alternatively it is just a loan until the end of August/September.

I doubt that.
Nelsen and Kevin Payne, the general manager of Toronto FC is doing an overhaul of the roster, and there are a lot of loans that supposedly will expire end of June. Any of the loanees have until then to impress, or they will be released and their spot be taken up by one of European players whose contract just expired at end of June. (well, likely European players. Toronto is also looking into Central and South America for players)

I can see this too. Prove himself in MLS for few years, try to get to Europe before he turns 28?

The bit I was skeptical about was the buy clause. Even if he does well I doubt he will be sold.

He's still got 2 years on his contract so I'd love it if he was sold off haha.

How common is it for MLS sides to buy a player though? I thought it was about the same as A-League - ie rare

pretty sure this loan is just to keep him playing for long off season, Toronto need a goal scorer, he's available and wanting to play - it's a win-win. It would be pretty stupid if we sold him after being our best goal scorer.

Especially doing so 1-2 weeks before a new coach was appointed.

Why would we be sending him otherwise?  Literally the only thing that could happen is he gets injured

Money for the loan, experience and staying match fit. Why are we sending Fenton and Boyd to play for Wyners? Why did Durante get loaned to Sydney for the Asian champs? Sames reasons.

Players signed on transfer fees are rare, but some teams will buy players if the fee are small enough. More teams are paying transfer fees for players, though most of them ends up being a 'designated player' (A League marquee players, each MLS teams are allowed 3 designated players)

Ok so I presume we are actively looking for loan moves for all of our players in the off season?  I don't understand it personally just as I didn't get the Durante move.  Surely all you can do is turn their head if it goes well

Nice one for brockie, with a long off season I reckon the club should look at doing more of it. I'm sure there are plenty of leagues going on at the mo we could look at/players could look at.

I really hope he doesnt come back injured.

The Wellington Phoenix has agreed to loan Jeremy Brockie to the Ryan Nelsen-coached MLS League club Toronto FC.

General Manager David Dome said the club had been working with Toronto to bring the deal to fruition and he is pleased that Brockie is getting the opportunity to taste life in another top league.

“It is a great opportunity for Jeremy as the MLS is of a good standard, and it is possible that Jeremy could come back an even better player than he now is,” Dome said.

“The break between seasons in the A-League is too long and the club has been looking for opportunities for some of the players to play football in other leagues in an effort to get greater benefit from the break.

“Michael Boxhall is currently on loan to the Oakleigh Cannons in the Victorian Premier League as part of this programme”

“Both Clubs have also agreed to work closely together on football issues following on from this deal so it’s a great association to have”

Brockie will return to the Phoenix in August.

Hope Brockie does well, tho am a little surprised Nelsen didn't look at Smeltz. Brockie's star is on the rise atm tho.

For all you know he did, but Smeltzy has to go on important shopping trips with his missus over the break.

Hang on, let's be fair here.... they've got to move there first THEN decide she doesn't like it and come home.

Smeltz would be much much much more expensive and hugely out of form.

On the other hand Brockie is from Nelson.. and Nelsen might like that

Brings out a decent idea - not nelsen, but there is now a relationship between the two clubs so we could see loans coming the other way maybe?

yes but just how feasible would this be for Wellington, with restrictive foreign player quota?
