Sims on the pine for a 3-1 road win.

25 yr old Ivory Coast team mate Diabate with a hat trick. He's never played a game for Côte d'Ivoire, at an any level. An indication of the depth they have.

Sims on the pine for a 3-0 win. Month long break now in Sweden.

25 yr old Ibrahim Diabate from the Ivory Coast the first goal for GAIS. He has 9 goals in 12 league games for GAIS this season. Played for the 2nd teams of Mallorca, Atlético Madrid and Sevilla.

Never played for Côte d'Ivoire at any level. Would probably have 15+ caps for the AWs, though this is yes his first season of significant goals at a senior level.

GAIS win 3-0

Degerfors with 9 shots on target, zero goals… Sims to thank for that, with all 9 saves. GAIS score three from five on goal 🤯

Match highlights, but it's mainly GAIS's 3 goals. Sims makes 4 saves but only 1 would you call challenging. Must have been some other better ones.

Lets hope he's nailed the starter's role for awhile.
Krasniqi the usual keeper was listed on the pine. GAIS had been travelling very well (now unbeaten in 9 league games) so a surprise from afar Sims got picked. Maybe Krasniqi has a niggle.

Sounds him being picked was just squad rotation.

GAIS has been rolling along like a steam train lately, culminating in a 3-2 win against Hammarby last week. They’ve risen right up into contention for the European places and an excellent defence conceding less than a goal per game has been a major factor in that. But Kees Sims hadn’t had much to do with it all. He played through the League Cup group stage prior to the Allsvenskan season and he’s popped up in friendlies and in the U21 cup... but with GAIS number one Mergin Krasniqi in fine form and fitness, Sims had spent the league games sitting on the bench.

Until the trip to struggling Degefors this week where coach Fredrik Holmberg decided to make four changes to the team that beat Hammarby, citing a need to keep his whole squad active and rewarded for their efforts in training. Kees Sims was one of those changes and in his first match of the season he made nine saves on the way to a clean sheet victory...

That’s how you take your opportunity. Most of those saves were relatively simple ones but Sims made them all without a fuss and also earned praise for his distribution and aerial work. GAIS won 3-0 to further entrench themselves in the top six. They’ve now gone 11 games undefeated in the Allsvenskan (whereas Degefors have lost seven in a row).
This isn’t going to change anything about where he sits in the squad but at least Sims has offered up a little more evidence that he’s ready to go whenever he’s called upon. And perhaps kept any curious scouts on notice too.

Fredrik Holmberg pre-game: “It's time to give [Sims] an opportunity and a chance. He's too good to never get a chance to show how good he is.”

Fredrik Holmberg post-game: “[Kees Sims] put in a great effort. Very stable in the air game and on the shots from outside as well as making good decisions with the ball. Especially because it was his first Allsvenskan match in a while. So I am very satisfied.”

Yes Sims sadly back to the bench. GAIS lead 1-0 after 15 mins.

Edit - 3-0 win. GAIS (5th) having a good season.
2 pts off Malmo (3rd) and European spots.

Surprisingly Sims in goal as GAIS lose 0-2 to top of the table Mjallby

Niche Cache.

Sims not only got the start in a 3-1 Svenska Cupen second round win against Lödde, as expected, but he also got the start in a 2-0 league defeat against top-of-the-table Mjällby, very unexpectedly.

The cup game was a routine affair with GAIS going 3-0 up after 48 minutes and the only concession being a late-ish penalty kick. Even with a rotated team they were way too good for their lower-tiered opponents.

The Mjällby game was the opposite. This time GAIS were the underdogs, producing a strong performance for much of the game to frustrate the league leaders with their sharp press and defensive shape... but they couldn’t withstand them for the full distance. Goals conceded after 63 and 87 minutes. Sims kinda got sent for the first one, though that was because his entire backline left him exposed by sleeping on a ball over the top. The second was a header at the back post from a corner kick where Sims claimed (unsuccessfully) that he’d been fouled.

Could’ve done better on both counts... but otherwise he did good, including a nice low save leading to the corner.

Some playing action for Sims. Into the fray at 45 + 3 mins, presumably because starting GK Krasniqi is injured.

GAIS up 1-0 when he came on. Finishes 1-1.
A 6.8 Soccerway rating.

Him & Gray maybe in a battle for the 3rd GK spot with the AWs this window.
Looks like Tzanev ain't going well at all at Newport.
