AS with Bevin last year, this isn't a professional contract. It just provides the opportunity for San Jose to sign him up first.

Exactly.

More detail here:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/76090035/new...

"While there are no guarantees that Colvey will be signed by San Jose, the 21-year-old defender will report for preseason training this week and is now effectively on trial with the club...

"I am headed up to San Jose where their preseason camp will begin at the end of the week. I will just be training with the team and taking part in any preseason matches until the decision is made to either keep me on board or let me go."

Colvey grew up in the Marlborough Sounds before moving to Nelson where he attended Nelson College and played senior football for Nelson Suburbs, later being accepted into the Asia Pacific Football Academy and relocating to Christchurch for his final years of secondary school.

He then secured a scholarship to California Polytechnic State University where he has been playing for the past four years...."

Kip qualifies to play for both the USA and NZ.

He was born in Hawaii.

"Kip Colvey" does sound very American.

So another Tyler Boyd.

Lets hope that he turns out to be good enough to play for the All Whites but not the USA.

He's played for NZ at both u-17 (2011 FIFA u-17 World Cup) and u-23 level (2015 Olympic qualifiers PNG)

Kip Colvey Position: Defender
Height: 5-10
Weight: 162 lbs.
Born: March 15, 1994 in Lihue, Hawaii
Hometown: Picton, New Zealand
College: Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
Citizenship: USA/New Zealand

Looks like his contacts may have helped him to get to to San Jose:

http://www.sjearthquakes.com/post/2016/01/20/break...

"A four-year starter, Colvey departed Cal Poly ranked sixth all-time with 74 appearances, while playing his first two years under current Quakes Academy head coach Paul Holocher."

Been getting some minutes in preseason:

http://www.sjearthquakes.com/post/2016/01/28/earth...

http://www.sjearthquakes.com/post/2016/01/30/match...

"Fans got their first look at several new faces, including rookies Andrew Tarbell, Patrick Hodan, Kip Colvey.."

It seems like he's doing pretty good in preseason matches. Has been mostly a sub and provided an assist against Sacramento Republic FC. According to this:

has turned heads despite being picked in the third round of the MLS draft last month. The former Cal Poly star can fill a big need because he plays either side as an outside back.

Rosario Central, the All Whites, Waitakere United and the mighty Phoenix! speaker of engrish

And has just been subbed on.

Fantastic news for him - to make starting squad and get game time so soon. Now Hudson just needs to leave him at SJE and not pull him out of there for meaningless training camps.

Kotahitanga. We are one.

Starting today against Timbers (Gleeson on the bench).

Great goal.

Colvey got a full 90 minutes in a 2-1 win. Promising signs very early on. Seems to be drawing a lot of praise already among the fans.

Hopefully more NZers can follow Colvey's lead and get to this stage.

Does anyone know how being born in the US has aided him? Is there a limit on international players?

Kip got credited with an assist on their first goal. Quote from the Quakes big soccer forum

"Everyone on the team needs to have the vision Colvey had on his second assist to Godoy leading to the goal. He didn't play the safe pass and the killer through ball gave us that goal".

Looks like full 90 and an assist for the first goal today in a 2-1 win

Yes there is. Default is 8 but teams can trade amongst themselves.

Full 90 in a 3-1 loss to the Galaxy this arvo

Starting for Galaxy were Ashley Cole, Stevie Gerrard, Nigel De Jong & Robbie Keane! A dad's army of

past stars.

No doubt young Colvey would have been nervous. Hope he went well.

PS. How did Dan Keat ever get on the Galaxy roster?

De Jong is only 31. Been around for ages and still a few miles left in the tank.

He played mainly for the ressies but was also used as a centre back in the 1st team even though he's more a midfielder

Not required off the bench as San Jose drew 1-1 vs DC United.

Better for his development to be picked for PNG or stay Stateside?
