Kiwi Women Overseas

Thought it was time there was a thread for all the many talented NZ women now playing for overseas clubs and universities.

Motivated in this by noticing just how many darned good female players we have making careers overseas now - and by noting that there are only a couple of women listed under "Kiwi Players Overseas" and they've received no posts for about a year (buried three pages into this forum which no-one reads).

Probably there is enough interest for one umbrella thread for all women overseas rather than threads for individual players.

Please also pass news of this thread on to female football people you may know so they can follow it and contribute.

This is a big year for our women footballers with several now arguably amongst the best in the world and playing in the world's top women's leagues like Germany, Sweden and England, the Olympics on the horizon for the Football Ferns and our teams participating in the  FIFA Women's u-20 World Cup Finals in Japan in August, followed by the u-17 World Cup in Azerbeijan in September.

Ria on the bench but her side so poor defensively seems certain she'll see action at some stage.

Olympique Lyon the better team with lots of pace and skill- must be the best women's club side in Europe, even the world...

Great atmosphere in Munich's Olympic Stadium with what looks like a near-capacity crowd, most supporting Frankfurt. Could well be a record crowd for a Women's Champions League Final, maybe even a record for a women's club match in Europe. The Olympic Stadium holds 69,000.

Ria on in 60th minute to add some pace- described by the commentator as "a very, very fast player- she could make a difference..."

Crowd confirmed as 50,000- a record for a Women's European Final and I think for any European women's club match.

Commentator remarks Ria is already making a difference with her pace and helping create more chances for Frankfurt, more balls in the Lyon box...both commentators saying thay can't understand why Ria didn't start the game- "one of those bizarre decisions..."

Still 2-0 at 70 mins and Frankfurt getting forward more.

Fulltime: finishes 2-0 and Lyon deserved winners for the second year in a row. As the commentators on Eurosport sum up, Frankfurt paid the price for adopting too defensive a strategy and not fully utilizing their attacking talent like Percival. Ria's last game for Frankfurt- off to join Amber Hearn at Jena in East Germany next season...

Ria- as far as I know, the first Kiwi to appear in a European Women's Final.

Frankfurt defeated Arsenal Ladies in the semi over two legs 4-1 aggregate with Ria playing the whole game in both legs:

FFC Frankfurt have won the UEFA Women's Champions League three times (the record) and appeared in five finals. In 2006 27,000 attended the Final when Frankfurt played Potsdam.

Yeah, i saw the game live on TV here in Germany(free to air). I would have to agree with these comments about Ria after she came on.

She wasnt doing anything too fancy, actually she was just playing decent football pushed up from wing back(good idea when u are 2 down) played a couple of one twos down the wing or give and go's. she did this three times in the first 10 mins she was on and all 3 times resulted in decent wide play and a decent cross or play into the box. she wasnt doing the finishing balls into the middle, she basically got her job done, delivered the ball to the wide winger and then tracked back into defense.

A couple of times in her spell she had to double time it back to catch up to her attacking opposite as she was taking risks by pushing up. but it was all covered in the end.

There was also joy for Football Ferns skipper Rebecca Smith as Wolfsburg beat Ria Percival’s Frankfurt 1-0 with a second half penalty to book their place in next season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League and set up some final day drama next weekend to decide overall Bundesliga honours.

Ria started and was substituted in the 73rd minute, whilst Rebecca played the whole match.

The result ended Frankfurt’s slim hopes of returning to the Champions League and capped a miserable week where they lost two cup finals including this season’s Champions League final against Lyon.

Wolfsburg are just one point behind leaders Turbine Potsdam and need to better their points haul in the final round of matches next Tuesday morning (NZT). Wolfsburg are away to Essen-Schönebeck while Potsdam, who beat third placed Duisburg 2-0 away from home this morning, are home to bottom of the table Lokomotive Leipzig next week.

Leipzig are in a three way battle to avoid relegation with Anna Green and her team mates keeping their hopes alive with a 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich. With Bayer Leverkusen edging Amber Hearn’s USV Jena 3-2, only one of Leipzig (13 points), Leverkusen (14) and Jena (15) will avoid the drop next weekend.

In other German league action Sarah Gregorius was on the score sheet for the second week running, netting Bad Neuenahr’s first goal in a 4-0 rout of Hamburg.

Unfortunately, Rebecca Smith's Wolfsburg had to settle for second in the Frauen Bundesliga after they drew 1-1 at Essen (Smith didn't play) whilst Potsdam annihilated Football Fern Anna Green's Leipzig 8-0 to take the title and condemn Leipzig to relegation. (Anna Green played the whole game).

"The FFC Turbine Potsdam has secured for the sixth time overall and for the fourth consecutive year, the German Championship. Brandenburg's interior provided with their 8-0 (3-0) win at home against 1 FC Lok Leipzig not only for clarity in the title race, but sent back the same in the second Sächsinnen Women's League.

The Japanese world champion Yuki Nagasato brought the turbines before 6460 spectators at the Karl-Liebknecht-Stadion in the 19th Minute on the road to victory, Antonia Göransson (36th) and Genoveva Anonma (39th) scored for the half-time, the World Cup participant from Equatorial Guinea in the 55th Followed by the 4-0 minutes left.

Nagasato added two more goals (64, 68) to a total of three. Margret Lara Vidarsdóttir (86) and Isabel Kerschowski (88) made the final score late in perfectly. Anonma secured a total of 22 goals season also the top scorer before Conny Pohlers (19) of Hamburger SV.

Wolfsburg land in second place:

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALI RILEY ON BEING NAMED NZ WOMEN'S PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2012 (fourth in a row)

Her team Malmo in Sweden are currently third in the Swedish Women's League after seven rounds (season runs April- November). Fellow Football Fern Kirsty Yallop's Vitsjo are second after Yallop scored in the latest round:

Previously Ali won the US women's title with Western New York Flash coached by former Cantabrian and All White, Aaron Lines and playing alongside Brazil legend Marta.

Like many top players from the national pro women's league in the USA, the WPS, which is having a one year break, Ali has been forced to find a club in Europe. Last year with a 13-2-3 regular season record, the Flash earned the regular season title and the right to host the WPS Championship Final against Philidelphia. On August 27, 2011, Western New York Flash capped their inaugural season in WPS by capturing the 2011 WPS Championship title 1-1 (5-4) in a penalty kick shootout in front of the largest championship crowd in league history.

Rebecca Smith's Wolfsburg were presented with the German Women's Bundesliga title on the weekend (first title in their history) and stand to bask in more glory the next few weeks, with an unprecedented treble in the offing: 

- German Cup Final v Potsdam on Sunday (Monday am NZT); 

- UEFA Women's Champions League Final v the holders Lyon Thursday next week (Friday am NZT) - Stamford Bridge, London

GERMANY: A division down and Rebekah Stott was an unlikely hero for SC Sand scoring the only goal in a 1-0 away win at second-placed Koln to maintain their push for a place in the Frauen Bundesliga.  Sand – who also have Betsy Hassett on their books – are currently third in the Southern Conference of the German second division, four points off the automatic promotion place with three games to play.

In the Northern Conference, Anna Green and Lokomotive Leipzig are stuck in mid-table.

SWEDEN: Ali Riley has played every minute in Malmo’s opening three matches in the Damallsvenskan.  Malmo – last season’s runners up – are unbeaten but sit in third place on goal difference and trail league leaders Tyreso by two points.  Similarly, Kirsty Yallop has played all 270 minutes for her side Vittsjo, although they have a single win from their first three outings.

Meanwhile over the Channel in Britain, it seems we only have one rep in England's top women's league these days, Hayley Bowden (Moorwood before her marriage to former All Black Dominic Bowden).

She of course signed for top English club Lincoln Ladies (a smaller town with a big history of success in women's football) in the English Womens Super League last month, having played for Chelsea 2010- 2011. The English women's season only kicked-off mid-April::

Only 26 foreign players have played in England's semi-pro WSL, now in it's third season - and four of those have been Kiwis. That's almost one-in-six foreign players, a proud achievement for us a small country. NZ has been the largest source of foreign players, along with Australia and Spain.

Rebecca Smith's Wolfsburg clinched the second part of the treble on Sunday, winning  a thriller in the DFB German women's Cup final 3-2 against Potsdam.

Only 27 foreign players have played in England's semi-pro WSL, now in it's third season - and now five of those will have been Kiwis. That's almost one-in-five foreign players, a proud achievement for us a small country. NZ has been the largest source of foreign players, along with Australia and Spain.

Match Report: Liverpool Ladies 4 - 2 Everton Ladies

 Liverpool Ladies went into this game in pole position in the FA Women's Super League, 6 points from the final two games would see us crowned Champions of England for the first time...

The 4-2 victory over our Merseyside rivals again sends us clears at the top of the league, our main competitors now for the title Bristol Academy sit 5 points behind in second with a game in hand.

 The final day fixture against Bristol will be a title decider should they beat Doncaster in their game in hand. Liverpool vs Bristol is on Sunday 29th September, 2pm KO @ Halton Stadium.

Fantastic news regarding Sarah Gregorius and Liverpool Ladies - they won the FA Women's Super League for the first time in the club's history (after ten consecutive national titles to Arsenal !) yesterday (this morning NZ time) after beating closest rivals Bristol Academy 2-0.

Liverpool had five players playing for England on Thurs. night + Gregorius racing back from Football Ferns duty.

46 goals in 14 games. 12 wins, 2 losses, no draws.Finished bottom previous two seasons - but new manager, new players...

Top-scorer Natasha Dowie (19 goals) is the niece of former Northern Ireland, West Ham & Southampton striker Iain Dowie.

Telegraph: "The Gunners have traditionally had by far the best financial backing from their parent club, but they have been overtaken in cash terms this year by Liverpool, whose investment is close to the £1 million mark, and Chelsea. Next season Manchester City, set to replace Doncaster Rovers Belles in the WSL, will up the ante still further..."

Continues the trend of NZ being one of the top three sources for foreign players in the league since it inception.

City a new entry in the FA WSL and Hassett seen as a key signing. Experienced for a 23 year-old -  more than 50 caps for the Football Ferns. Played last for SC Sand in the German Women's Bundesliga Second Division.

City have also signed four England internationals: Jill Scott, Karen Bardsley, Steph Houghton and Toni Duggan.

Hoyle claims W-League title Football Ferns midfielder Katie Hoyle was part of a championship winning side on Sunday as her Melbourne Victory Australian W-League side took out the competition Grand Final 2-0 over Brisbane Roar at Lakeside Stadium.

AUCKLAND - Football Ferns midfielder Katie Hoyle was part of a championship winning side on Sunday as her Melbourne Victory Australian W-League side took out the competition Grand Final 2-0 over Brisbane Roar at Lakeside Stadium.

Playing in front of a crowd of over 2500, Hoyle started for the Victory and played 77 minutes before being replaced with her side, coached by former New Zealand U-17 coach Dave Edmondson, up 2-0.

After claiming the W-League title, the next club assignment for the 26-year-old Hoyle will be with Notts County Ladies FC in England for the new FA Women’s Super League season beginning later this year.

The Football Ferns squad for the upcoming Cyprus Cup tournament will be named next week.

Football Fern defender Rebecca Stott a regular for FC Sand who are leading the 2.Frauen-Bundesliga South after 12 games. 22 game season finishes in June. The German Women's Second Division is divided into two groups, North and South. The winners of each group gain promotion to the First Div. (where three Football Ferns play for USV Jena).

In Germany, Abby Erceg scored the winner for USV Jena away to Bayer Leverkusen on the weekend, leaving Jena fifth on the table behind Bayern Munich. Jena have three Football Ferns (also striker Hearn - nine goals - and defender Ria Percival - two goals), all regular starters.

In the Swedish league, the "Damallsvenskan" it's contrasting fortunes for the two Football Ferns' sides:

Five games into their season, Ali Riley's Rosengard (Malmo) lead the league.

While Football Ferns Japan goalscorer Kirsty Yallop's Vittsjo sit tenth after five games on the twelve team table.

Betsy Hassett's Manchester City Ladies FC sit bottom of the FA Womens Super League after two games, having lost both.

They were also dumped out of the FA Women's Cup a few weeks ago by Chelsea.

Hassett is the only overseas player in the newly promoted side.
