Whatever happened to retirement?
Playing for pocket money while studying sure sounds like retirement to me.

Winning a few things and not getting so many BS calls against you after years of hard yards for head bandages and shoulder injuries probably nice also.

Louis one of the heroes of the Nix imo and the way he came back time and again makes him just as much, if not more, a great role model as those   parlayed talent into an overseas career.

Hope he enjoys the sunshine and 20 degrees through the Queensland winters!

Was dated from a few weeks back, but sounds as though young goalkeeper Henry Gray is over at the Central Coast Mariners.

However, the young talent does not see the time with Wellington as a wasted opportunity. “Of course, I expected more from my time with the club,” Gray said. “But I am also grateful for the six months I got to work with [goalkeeper coach] Paul Gothard and improve myself to a level that was far more than I thought possible. I am also grateful to have worked within a professional setup. Even now, I train with the Central Coast Mariners with Miguel Miranda, who previously worked with goalkeepers like Ederson or Jan Oblak.”

They obviously have a pretty good track record over there with the youth setup. Haven't seen any other sources to confirm otherwise, but perhaps something to keep an eye on?

British parents. Born in Germany. He should have a useful passport at least.

The U20 WC in Indonesia this year will be a big shop window for him, if he can fight off Kees Sims & others for the starting spot.

NPL Victoria kicked off over the weekend and there was no shortage of Kiwi's in amongst it all.

All the goals here ⬇️

Former NZ U17 rep Emlyn Wellsmore played a full 90 for his new club Oakleigh Cannons as they got off to a solid start to their campaign with a 3-1 win at home over a Green Gully side featuring Taylor Schrijvers who was also making his club debut.

Five time All White, and various age grade rep Luke Adams got off to a winning start for his new club Dandenong Thunder. Played the full 90 as they came away with a 1-0 victory against Heidelberg United on the road.

Andrew Withers (GK) formerly of Eastern Suburbs and part of their premiership winning side of 18/19 (Remember that lot?! McCowatt, Just, De Jong, Kalua, Payne, Pijnaker 🤯) Well his Port Melbourne side got off to a steady start with a 2-2 draw at home to Avondale. This despite playing about an hour with 10 men. Fellow Kiwi Daniel Edwards (formerly of Eastern Suburbs and Hamilton Wanderers) was credited with the assist for Port Melbourne's first goal from a well worked corner move.

To round out the weekend, Former Nix lad, and big unit George Ott would be happy with his turnout for St Albans Saints as he scored his first goal for his new club against last seasons employers Melbourne Knights. Unfortunately they couldn't hold on for the three points as the Knights grabbed a late equaliser, and it finished 1-1.

Quick round up of Kiwi's playing for their respective NPL sides. There's more than you think!

Queensland NPL
Jackson Simpkin (20) - The former NZ U17 Representative got through 53 minutes at LB as his Brisbane City side overcame a 9 man Brisbane Roar II side 1-0 courtesy of a 94th minute penalty at A. J. Kelly Park. Recent U20 call up Ty Cobb (17) started up top for the Roar before being subbed after 71 minutes.

Dylan Tate (27) came on for the final 10 minutes for a club debut after moving to Brisbane from Victorian club Eastern Lions in the off season. He ultimately couldn't help his Redlands United side hold on to the three points against Lions FC though, who themselves featured three pretty familiar Kiwi names of their own Aidan Munford (23), Matthew Ridenton (26) & Louis Fenton (29). Game finished 1-1, and old mate Louis earned himself next week off with a straight red in the 62nd minute.

Oliver Duncan (23) got on the score sheet early for Sunshine Coast Wanderers against Hayden McHenery (26) and his Peninsula Power outfit. Unfortunately Duncan was forced off at 39 minutes (Power red card a minute or so prior) due to injury. Final result 2-1 to South Coast Wanderers. McHenery played the full 90 for the Power.

Dan Champness (21) came on after the hour mark and helped his Moreton Bay side to a dramatic come from behind win against Olympic. With both sides reduced to 10 men, Moreton Bay scored in the 94th to level it 1-1, before Champness scored the winner in the 101st minute to take the points at home.

Shelford Dais (26) who is of Kiwi heritage, but raised on the Gold Coast managed 66 minutes at RB as his Gold Coast Knights were whipped 3-0 by Gold Coast United.

I was going to cover the NSW & Victorian Kiwi's as well, but am buggered from work, so might get onto that over the next few days. Chur.

Alright, needed that couple of days rest. Was posting the rest of the players again last night and the page refreshed so I gave up...

Anyway, here's the rest from NSW & Victoria NPL.

NSW NPL
Zac Zoricich (20) got 49' against Blacktown City FC in what ended up being a 1-0 loss for CCM II. Not the best game for him either after turning over the ball near halfway late in the first half. The Blacktown player sprinted away and struck a powerful shot across the keeper for the winner on the day.

NPL Victoria
Emlyn Wellsmore (22)
played pretty much a full game at RB for his Oakleigh Cannons side as they drew 1-1 with Melbourne Knights. He was subbed off late on in the 93rd minute. Given the rumours surrounding Callan Elliot potentially heading to Scotland/League One, he could be a viable option as a replacement - Kiwi youth player, experienced at NPL level (73 games across Queensland/Vic NPL clubs) and has been involved with Brisbane Roar youth sides previously. Just a thought. 🤔

Taylor Schrijvers (26) got a full 90 for his Green Gully side as they eventually succumbed to South Melbourne 3-1 at home, after playing for about an hour with 10 men. Schrijvers was credited with an assist for Gully's goal though, although it did look a scramble watching it on NPL TV, but we'll give it to him.

Dan Edwards (24) and Andrew Withers (28) logged full 90's in a 2-0 away at North Geelong.

And finally, that game between Dandenong Thunder and St Albans Saints, and what a cracker - 4-4 it finished, after St Albans were 3-1 up at 87 minutes, but then found themselves down 4-3 after 93 minutes. Up stepped George Ott (21) with a late penalty to steal a share of the points, but also complete his hattrick on the day. Still early days in the competition, but he leads the golden boot with four goals in his first two appearances for St Albans. Luke Adams (28) also logged a full 90 for Dandenong, getting a yellow card for his troubles.

Came on in the 83rd minute for his debut! Interesting that a home grown Kiwi gets his break after crossing the ditch. Doubt he was on any radar here, although now gets a call up for his first NZ international squad with the 23's.

Hasn't been in a Matchday squad since opening weekend after coming off as a result of a heavy challenge.

Ty Cobb - Brisbane Roar II (RW/LW)

8 appearances, 720 minutes, 1 goal/0 assists, 3 x 🟨

George Ott - St Albans Saints (ST)

Bright start, but form has dropped off, coinciding with St Albans starting to struggle on the field.

Scott Hilliar - Bentleigh Greens (CB)
7 appearances, 630 minutes, 1 goal/0 assists, 2 x 🟨

I know there are more New Zealanders about the place in Northern NSW, Canberra, South Australia, West Australia, Tasmania etc as well as at lower levels in NSW, Victoria & Queensland. But the coverage and information coming out from clubs and federations within these areas is just so sporadic and incomplete at best that it makes it bloody hard to correlate stats accurately.

In saying that, happy to take requests if anyone's got any leads and reliable information sources.

George Ott transfers from a struggling St Albans side, to top of the table Avondale FC.

Excellent move for him, and a forward thinking move for him at that, with his new club being one of the 26 teams going through the process to be included in the National Second Tier for 2024.

George Ott might have helped his Avondale FC side to a first NPL VIC Premiership. He's certainly helped put them in pole position leading into the final round of the regular season.

Came on at about the hour mark this afternoon in their top of the table clash against South Melbourne in the pissing rain and laid on an assist for his side's second goal as they crucially held on to win 2-1.

Avondale (64 points & +54 GD) with their final regular season match next weekend against relegation threatened Bentleigh Greens. They could still be caught by South Melbourne (59 points & + 32 GD) if they lose next weekend and SMFC win their remaining two matches.
