Week's Round-Up:
VPL
Bentleigh Greens 2 - 1 Dandenong Thunder
Michael Gwyther
Ryan de Vries (Goals 53', 74')
"It took some magic from Ryan De Vries, who scored two second half goals, to guide the Greens to a crucial win. Bentleighs early pressure paid off in the 52nd minute when Ryan De
Vries scored after a messy piece of football in the 18 yard box. After a lengthy scramble in the area, Dandenong failed to clear a
sequence of missed hits on goal, before De Vries pounced, and smashed
the ball into the back of the net five yards from goal. Bentleighs second half dominance paid off once more when De Vries scored his second for the match in the 74th minute. De Vries made a terrific run past the Thunders last line before putting it past Webster with ease"
Melbourne Knights 4 - 1 St Albans Saints
Leo Shin Luis Fenton (Goal 83')
Kayne Vincent (Goal 60', Off 78')
"Knights found another goal with Kayne Vincent scoring his second goal in
as many games. An easy side-foot finish was enough to find the back of
the net with Pavlovic and the Saints not knowing what hit them."
"To the Saints credit, they kept on fighting and were rewarded in the
closing stages of the match with a consolation goal. Just a minute after
blowing a great chance, Louis Fenton was played in one-on-one with
Martin John, going around the keeper and easily tapping the ball home."

De Vries another two goals in the VPL Sunday.
That's 7 goals in 5 games now.
Good stuff collecting all these reports Wibblebutt.
Was hoping to do QSL too but the website is useless.
So have James and De Vries not had any bites from A-League clubs, us included. Both could be handy.
James has hardly set the NSWPL on fire, and as others have said de Vries is a known quantity for Ricki.

Unfortunately neither has APIA. They started winning again in the last few games curiously since their owner/president has taken a back seat in the stands where the team can't hear his constant screaming, bit of a character/read nutter is our Tony Raciti.
Last game of the season for them tomorrow versus their old rivals Marconi (Wog Derby).
I'm heading along but neither side have anything to play for other than pride, for me it will be more about sinking beers at the local pre-game & smuggling in some alcohol.
James may not have set the PL on fire but he certainly gets mentioned by the amateur pundits that see him play.
An atrocious 0-0 draw at Lambert Park yesterday arvo.
James playing up front & a notable absence at post game drinks, I daren't ask the players what that was all about after their response when asked about Sam Messam. Suffice to say they won't miss him.
If he has given up on the colleges, maybe he could be part of the 'finishing school'?
Haven't seen Andrew Bevin's name mentioned here at all. He impressed at Lambert Park this afternoon I didn't even know he was a Kiwi until I googled his name during his 60"+ match for APIA versus Marconi. (Dago Derby)
He didn't score but he did fire one into the side netting that, if had gone in would have been contender for goal of the season. Proved to be a handful for the Marconi defenders.
Crap game otherwise. Marconi scored from their only opportunity, a marvelous free kick in the late stages. APIA wasted a penalty on the left post in time added on.

Could Perth be an option or are they full up with imports? Andy is quite tight with Gouldy so would think a trial there would be reasonably likely. Tom Biss, another young kiwi is training with the Glory at the moment thanks to Gouldy.
Being a kiwi, he will do well to earn a contract with an A-League team. But saying that CCM have a few visa spots open and haven't used them this season. They have picked up players from the NSWPL in the past.
He should look to transfer to another college then.
Why? If you are really set on being a pro-footballer the us college route isn't the best imo. You come out 1-2 years behind other players in terms of development and a pro-football career isn't that long. It's a good option if you want education as much as a football career. You have to make your own decisions in what's right for you.

Agreed. I've always thought this about the College path.

Mehmet, Miller and Van Den Brink signed up for next season. They were going to have to decide between McGarry & Andrezinho when it was going to be 4 visa spots. Now its staying at 5, they might keep both.
I suggested CCM, as I don't think they have used up all the import slots the last 2-3 seasons. They could take a gamble on him, if he impresses.
Someone else on here has said he's coming back too. Can't remember what thread
Wouldn't be surprised if we see Gould back next season - maybe back at the Nix.

He went over there and had a look and made his own decision. I consider that mature, not "daft". The US college system is not the only place to get an education and it isn't the best place to develop as a footballer. Unless you know the details there is no guarantee just how much of the costs his scholarship was covering.
If your talented student was the type who would actually benefit from an education he could have sought an education rather than (or at the same time) as working in a grocery store.

St Albans Saints 0 - 2 Oakleigh Cannons
Luis Fenton (Off 86')
Green Gully 4 - 0 VTC Football
Jeff Fleming (c)
Jason Hayne (Goals 28', 68', Off 80')
"Green Gully didn't wait long to double their lead, scoring a goal less than 60 seconds from the restart. Mathew Sanders played a ball through to Jason Hayne in space who slotted the ball past an out-running Mattei.
On the counter-attack Green Gully scored their third when Jason Hayne pressured Sebastian Mattei into a mistake, easily tapping the ball into an empty net to secure his 11th goal of the season."
Green Gully 2 - 0 Springvale White Eagles
Jeff Fleming (c, Goal 69')
Jason Hayne (Pen 36')
"Mathew Sanders was fouled from behind by Daniel Paunov as he was about to shoot, and Paunov was shown a straight red card for his challenge by referee Shaun Evans. Jason Hayne stood up in the absence of Graham Hockless and neatly tucked away the spot-kick for his 12th goal of the season.
Green Gully continued their dominance of the match in the second half but couldn't capitalize on their chances with many gone begging. Mathew Sanders was the culprit for wasting a number of chances for the Cavaliers, missing three good chances in the space of three minutes early in the half. But up stood Jeffrey Fleming on 69 minutes, blasting a rocket of a strike from outside the area right into the top left-hand corner of the goal. It was his first goal in almost three years in the VPL, and one which was well worth the wait.

And it didn't take long for the two to make an impact, just seven minutes to be exact, when Beckett played Vincent in with a ball over the Hume defence, and the No.9 chipped a ball over an on-running Lupce Acevski to bring the Knights level and knock Hume off top spot once again.
Hume were in trouble and needed to get back in front, pushing a lot of men forward. Doing so, it left them often undermanned at the back and prone to counter attacks, and it was just that which saw them concede again with Kayne Vincent latching onto a great ball by Tomislav Uskok before putting a clinical finish past Acevski to give the Knights the lead."

Coey Turipa's Brisbane Wolves are now Brisbane Premier League champions again.
Looking at the Sydney FC forums, a few people have posted that they like the look of Andy Bevan at APIA Leichhardt in the NSWPL.
So they should he is superb. Wonder what happened with US College (assuming it's the same Andy Bevin).
Last night at APIA, they have a young blonde haired striker named Andy Bevin. Don't know much about him but he is 19. Very Impressive. For a small player he holds the ball very well and holds of much bigger defenders. Very fast and scored a brilliant curling goal in the 90'. Would like to think Sydney FC scouts are taking a look at him. Seems to be a similar kind of player to Ben Halloran.
Bevan is a Kiwi though isn't he?
Great goal last night and also impressed against Marconi before he was taken off.

He's a young all white. He looks decent at that level but he's pretty much a sh*t Adam Biddle
Great goal last night and also impressed against Marconi before he was taken off.
Appears he is.
http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/bevin/profil/spieler_131060.html
Quality player still but probably not on a foreign spot. Under 20 international for NZ with 4 goals in 9. Played at Waitakere United.

He was impressive at the Good Friday Derby, showed some good skills & was a real handful. Had a very strong solo run followed by shot on goal that hit the side netting & had us jumping up prematurely then almost straight after got subbed, which was a bit eh?
No way is he good enough for first team. Decent pace but doesn't know what to do with it and the defenders a tually beat him to it and muscled him off the ball plenty of times. Good shot for the goal though and a stand out for APIA. Considering how sh*t they are that's not saying much.

Is he another that was overlooked for a final NZ squad?
Why would Bevin drop out of the States College system?
Was scoring goals and getting quality press and would be getting a top class education for free,
So why leave to take up a non professional contract in Australia??
Boggles the mind... clearly a good player, but maybe not the smartest individual.
Hope i'm worng and he's heading back.
he hasnt really dropped out, will prob go back next semester. came back to try get into nz olympic team. and he is quite intelligent, kinda
Is the NSWPL professional?
Even if he is not getting paid, he would be ruled ineligible if someone on his team is considered professional. It just seems a risk when he could look at playing the same league in the US that Spragg is.

supposodly its all sweet/sorted
The hot oil is that he's not going back to the US. Wants to be a professional footballer and thinks here or Australia is the best place to achieve that in the short term. Is hoping something might come out of the new Phoenix set up. Good grades in the US but the pro dream, girlfriend at home, not happy with the coaching set up at UWV all contributed to coming home and staying down here.

WHY??
Because over 90% of people who try to go professional do not make it. He is giving up a wonderful opportunity which could lead to a pro contract ( Boxall / Henderson / Keat / Boyens / Nelsen all have gone through the system) but at the very least if he does not make it, it ensures he gets a degree and great possible career paths.
Also because, after one game pro or even before he could get an injury which will stop his career before it even starts... then what.
Putting all your eggs in one basket is very dangerous, especially with such an attractive alternative option is there which may still help you to achieve your ultimate goal.
I had a very talented student who was very capable at football and dreamed of being a pro player and put all his energy in to that, as did his parents at the expense of his schooling despite various warnings this was a very dangerous move. He now packs bags at a grocery store!!

Herbert has coached the team by himself after assistants Jonathan Gould and Luciano Trani fled for Perth and Adelaide respectively.
With the Welnix consortium ensuring the club's finances are now in good health, it is understood the highly regarded Gould will return to Wellington to work with goalkeeper Glen Moss and Co next season.
Herbert says he is encouraged by the calibre of the applicants for the vacant assistant job, yet there is a no-frills appeal to the current setup.
