Alfred Johansson (new Motherwell manager): “I haven't caught up with Elijah yet. I think it's fair to him to be able to be in America and focus on the national team now. I've focused more on the guys that are actually here and had good talks with them. He's a good player and he's a Motherwell player. I think there's always going to be rumours and links. I guess that there will be questions about that pretty often, especially when the window is open. It's going to be a big thing, players getting linked right, left and centre. It's a part of the expectation so I don't focus too much about it.”

That was the new Motherwell coach when asked about Eli Just’s situation. Johansson’s been hired to replace Jens Berthel Askou who has taken up the gig at Toulouse in France, the Steelmen going Scandinavian for Scandinavian with their coaching appointments. Johansson seems like a really exciting young manager... but will Eli Just even get to play for him? Frankly, that’s doubtful. He was already looking likely to be prised away before he went and scored three goals at the World Cup where he was New Zealand’s top performer. Now it’s possible that even Celtic and Rangers might get squeezed out of any bidding war. Just has said all along that he wanted to park any questions about his club future until after the World Cup, giving his agent the big Do Not Disturb sign. Now that’s done and we’ll see how quickly things move.

The Celtic and Rangers stuff has been around since January. They were the first two teams on the list – and bear in mind that a Celtic move would come with Champions League possibilities. The other team we’ve gotta automatically consider is Toulouse since he’s already played under Jens Berthel Askou at Horsen and Motherwell plus JBA tried to sign him at Göteborg as well. Toulouse don’t have European footy next season like Motherwell do but they’re a very solid mid-table Ligue 1 club. Like, imagine playing against two-time reigning Champions League title holders Paris Saint-Germain a couple times per year. Southampton, in the English second tier, was specifically linked last week (albeit via a source of sceptical legitimacy).

Internet aggregators have thrown a few other names out, while the NZ Herald have offered a far more credible scoop: “there has already been interest expressed from top clubs in France, while he is being tracked by a number of British teams”.

Similar things are being said about Finn Surman, by the way. This comes from reporters on the ground and around the All Whites camp during the World Cup so it’s info worth paying attention to:

The Herald understands that big clubs from the top five leagues in Europe are tracking Surman, along with outfits in the Championship, the second tier of English football. The top five competitions are the English Premier League, La Liga (Spain), Serie A (Italy), Bundesliga (Germany) and France (Ligue 1). It’s believed that one of the largest teams in France are among the potential suitors, while Premier League teams are also monitoring the Christchurch product.”

Gotta stress that World Cup performances help but both Just and Surman would have already been on the radars of any club willing to bid for them based on what they’d already been doing for their clubs. Those scouting networks are very sophisticated. The World Cup may have helped confirm some suspicions about their abilities to deliver at the top level but no club in the realms that we’re talking about here would have ‘discovered’ them via that tournament. Combining their ages, their club form, their World Cup efforts, and especially their playing profiles... Just and Surman are the two blokes who have the most potential to scoop up the best possible moves in the next few weeks/months.

But they’re not alone. Callum McCowatt, Sarpreet Singh, and maybe even Joe Bell (though he’s pretty settled where he is as a Norwegian champion) are primed for moves. Matt Garbett too, even though he wasn’t able to feature at the World Cup. Tim Payne (Olimpia) and Jesse Randall (Dundee United) have already gotten moves. Marko Stamenić, Liberato Cacace, Ben Old, and Max Crocombe made theirs within the past two years. Alex Paulsen and Tyler Bindon are contracted to Premier League clubs though may be looking at further loan moves before they get a crack at the big time. It’s not wishful thinking to say we should see plenty of exciting movement between now and the closing of the European transfer windows.

Just quickly on McCowatt, Silkeborg rejected offers from overseas (including Minnesota United) back in January, when their sports manager told media that he was too important to their relegation battle... but also that they wanted to wait until after the World Cup to sell him when they could demand a higher fee: “There is also an expectation that he will play for New Zealand at the World Cup this summer, so if his value is going to rise through that then it is also better to wait until the World Cup is played.”

Since then Tonni Adamsen (Rapid Vienna) and Nicolai Larsen (Vejle) have both left the club. Adamsen and McCowatt carried this team with their goals throughout a difficult season while goalkeeper Larsen was equally valuable at times. You’d imagine when they’ve already lost a couple key players they’d want to keep McCowatt but the thing about that is those two both left for frees. McCowatt, in contrast, would command a transfer fee. Silkeborg are a seller club and McCowatt is their top player asset. Club director Kent Madsen was asked about CM’s situation a couple days ago and this is what he said: “I'll be delighted if he's still here when the window closes, but it remains to be seen.”

And a bit on Matt Garbett too, whose Peterborough chairman has a habit of sinking a few brews and responding to fans on social media. A few months ago he revealed that Posh had rejected a £1.7m bid for Garbs from a rival League One club in January. It was expected he’d probably be sold this offseason if the price was right in order for Peterborough to reinvest that money into their squad... but with the injury that Garbett sustained at the World Cup it now doesn’t look like he’ll be able to pass a medical until after the transfer window closes on 1 September. So it’ll be Peterborough for at least another six months then. Most likely. You never know with these things.

Up Next: Lots of busy agents, none more than Eli Just’s

Rumours floating around local media in Wales that Swansea are very interested in Just. Begrudgingly I think Swansea are on the up again if they can keep hold of Vipotnik, who incidentally I think would play really well with Eli.

Edit: largely citing Celtic more than Rangers as the most likely competitor for his signature

‘crashing out’ after performing very creditably as the lowest ranked team in the competition and possibly also the team with the lowest professional player pool too.

Not sure who’s writing that headline, but they’re kinda muppets.

I felt like I was served a lot of rugby videos during the World Cup. While football is small and volatile, perhaps some in Rugby HQ are looking at it as a stone in the shoe, rather than a different crowd.

Could it be the difference from us being plucky losers to having plenty of players with genuine ambitions to play at a good level? And access to the wider world in a way rugby desires, but struggles with.

We absolutely crashed out of the World Cup. We got battered 5-1 when we still had a chance to progress. You could maybe say that was unfair if we had only lost 2-0 or something

Just read that Nando Pie-knacker is lined up for a move to Vietnam. That can't be true?

Link?

Has Vietnam just discovered oil or something - both Nando and Rufer are too good for their comp, so the money on offer must be impressive.

Outside his injuries he's been very solid. I thought he might try Europe again personally, so the above would be quite disappointing.

Stefan Mauk went up there from Adelaide last season. Heard him on a podcast that there's a heap of money in that league and that he was earning double what he could in the A-League

would be the end of his development as a player would it not, or a slow down at best. weaker league not stretching himself. least the A league has made him prove himself which he did in first season back

I found a source. Unsure on the credibility, but seems a bit suspect to me (ChatGPT images aren't a great sign).

Plus what I think is another mention on a Vietnam Football page on Facebook from an annonymous user.

Doesn't mean it isn't happening, I'd just keep an eye to see if we get somebody more local to corroborate before getting too carried away

Yipe would be a disappointing move, a sense of unfulfilled potential. It would put him in danger of slipping out of a full strength AWs squad. But maybe he’s happy to have gone to a WC, if not played a minute

Stanger and Hughes to join Bindon plus Surman.

Would also leave AFC short on CBs with Hall and JGR both goneski. Would have to be a very nice fat fee for them to agree to a Nando release before his contract expires in 12 mths

for a short while may not put his AW position under threat. Not against likes of India anyway. but when AWs start the serious campaign to the next WC playing in Vietnam does not out you at front of the queue and if the lads behind him now are developing and taking the next step up, doubt Vietnam is where you stretch yourself and develop as a player. Might even open the door for Tuiloma short-mid term

Absolute bollocks.
We had a draw and a game where we were leading.
France crashed out because they were expected to compete with Spain and got spanked. Brazil crashed out 7-1 to Germany in that fateful match.

Have the island nations been crashing out of qualifying for years?

Crashing out is being subpar against expectations.

That Belgium team went 2-1 against Spain and battered the higher rated (than us) US 4-1.

We were much more competitive than expected, but no, did not fair well against a top ten team. To nobody’s surprise.

What would have been a not crashing out score against Belgium? 2-0 with 7 % possession?

England's loss to Argentina made me feel better... they were the better side, got infront and then choked as their nerves got them... showing just how big a challenge it is to conquer an individual and a teams nerves on the big stage.

NZ struggled been in front, and as much as those lost opportunities sting, we can at least look back and say we had moments, really good moments.

Agreed, We were in a position to get six points and got one.

I wrote that Belgium game off as soon as the WC draw happened.

but when you do a google search a few sites like bbc wales are reporting this. And the Motherwell chats are doom and gloom about the upcoming season.
Kinda hoped he went to Toulouse with Jans, but if it’s true another player in a top half championship team and playing with Stamenic can only be good for the AWs

I mean we crashed out much in the way Cabo Verde were favourites to win the cup.

We were playing sides rated higher than us. Egypt wore us down and blew us off the pitch. Iran came back at us twice, and are certainly a nation with a lot more World Cup experience and football pedigree than us.

We performed slightly ahead of expectations and better than many of us hoped. We gave up 3 at the back and so we scored, but also gave up headed goals our previous approach would have smothered.

At no point could you describe us as humiliated or our game as a disaster, the way crashing out of a race is.

It’s a part of the media trying to put us back in the useless, honest battlers box and to detract from the achievement our style of play, goal scoring and chasing the result against strong teams. We lost trying to go better than unbeaten, but didn’t crash out.

You are just digging your hole deeper using Cape Verde comparisons

The NZ media is extremely soft on critiquing anything wrong with our football. It should be applauded questioning our performance and if it helps lead to a change of coach, that’s a positive.

Your slant makes me wonder even more about your DD blinkers.

Time to concentrate on real good news - like Just’s potential transfer.

Doubt Bell will leave Viking yet. They are a two legged playoff away from playing Champions League.

But otherwise your point makes some sense.

So Belgium was an unexpectedly bad result?
The point being not that there is critiquing- that requires knowledge, but they’re saying the AWs are terrible. And you are agreeing.

For years we were honest bluffers. Sometimes it felt like we played football apologetically- oh I’m sorry I’m from New Zealand, but…

At a party it might be oh you’re in the All Whites, that’s okay I won’t tell my cousin you don’t play rugby.

I remember going to an open mike night in Ponsonby where the the host’s material was New Zealand are really shit at football. It was weird. Couldn’t figure out who it was for. But a lot of rugby people are weird about football. And happy when this former status quo is confirmed. We’re good at rugby and crap at soccer.

New Zealand who are shit at football crashed out of the World Cup because they are crap at football and a token football team in a rugby land.

A change of coach? Nobody else wanted the job. Nobody else applied.

And yes, this relates to David Dome too. FFS.

With ‘fans’ like you helping mate, making sure everyone knows how crap we are, we don’t need any help from people who actually want our sport to fail.

It's almost at the stage where the AWs could have useful run on 11 solely from the top 3 tiers in the UK.

Assumptions -
Surman to Championship, Stanger to Burton & Dibley-Dias loan deal to a League One club. Bindon a shoe horned RB
Fulham still yet to release MDD so they must see a player there, if he can stay injury free.

On that note - we could almost run an 11 on players with a transfer value of more than 1 mil Euros. Yes it's transfermarkt, but this time last year NZ only had 5 players worth north of a mil.
