I guess this is the right move for him. He is young and will learn a lot from this experience. Hope he is doing well over there.

Goes back as far as last year too, with people like Vinnie Lia saying the same thing. Sad to hear and embarrassing.

Good move for him. Third tier in Germany will be tough and give him opportunities to improve.  As he said in the article, you have a good half season in Europe, and you never know what doors might open for you - so let's hope he does a Boyd (and plays for the All Whites as well!).

yeah, it seems like with no head coach there is no/little communication or direction between the club and players.

At some point someone within the club has made the decision not to renew certain contracts and obviously at that point they have simply done nothing.

It's actually pretty weird.

It's probably worth comparing this to a ridiculous workplace situation that I once witnessed.

I was contracting at a government department. A fellow contractor said to me one day that it was her last day and that no one had spoken to her about finalization or renewal. She had tried to meet with her boss and his boss too but they had been too busy. She bundled up her work, organized it excellently, left notes etc and left the organization. It took her boss 4 days to notice she was gone and it was rather hilarious to watch him going desk to desk asking people if they had seen her around and the panic that followed once he realized what had happened.

Good on Rogerson and McGarry for taking care of themselves and getting themselves well represented and organized for their next contract. I guess they have both learnt that if you want to manage your career effectively, you cannot rely on anyone but yourself.

Considering he played in the Hong Kong 7s for the Phoenix in May something doesn't add up in that statement.

Anyway, good luck to him.  Hope the Rogerson we spotted late last season for the first team is the one who has gone to Germany, if so he'll go well there.

"Obviously I went to Hong Kong [for the Soccer Sevens] and that was my last involvement with the Phoenix. Chris Greenacre was a part of that and I got on real well with Greenie, he gave me my chances towards the end of the season. But even he couldn't really tell me much in Hong Kong because he was in the same position as me, he wasn't sure about his future. It was a weird time not just for the players but for the staff as well."

He also said:

"They obviously had bigger things to worry about, their staff and the head coach, so they probably wanted to sort out contracts for them before they started looking at players."

I think this is a good exit interview. Nix also offered him a trial which sounds a bit like they are not rating him. Logan got a real offer at a club who actual shows interest. Phoenix are the losers in this, they groomed him a few years and got nothing out of him.

So Phoenix are automatically in the wrong. Sorry but if he wasnt deemed to fit what was required so be it. So the professional environment in Europe is all cuddly feely and yet calls from the club. Do wonder sometimes people think the Phoenix should be acting differently from other professional clubs for some reason.

Serious question, is it normal for a club to not inform a player if they are not going to be offered a new deal?

The Phoenix apparently told him in June that he would get the opportunity to trial for Rudan.but they couldn't offer him a contract because they wanted maximum flexibility.

He had to trial there as well though.

Understand how he'd be annoyed at the lack of communication and having to trial with Rudan, but to me that was a positive move by the club as we've seen what happens when you sign (or re-signs) players without the coach's approval.

Communication could have been better though.

Not sure but one example i can give is Arsenal and Jack Wilshere. His contract was running out and he was not offered a new deal, the club and manager held talks with him about this and he was reliably informed that he would be released, this gave him the opportunity to say a proper farewell to supporters and the club, as well as help him promptly find a new club.

We really need to put in place a director of football so these situations stop happening.

Yes. Coaches come and go. Players like Rogerson, Singh are long term projects. They are also young teenagers footballers with their first job, they deserve special treatment and protection.

?? having a director of football doesn't mean we'd sign these guys, but at least a DoF could talk to these guys regularly or be a point of contact for them

Sounds exactly like Rogerson playing in Wellington. Apart from the last minute win.

Rogerson did go 2 mths without even being in match day squad - so may have been injured for awhile?? Unsure

Stefan Marinovic recently gave some interesting views on German lower league football.

He was asked if he had any advice for ex Whitecaps team mate and wunderkid Alphonso Davies. Davies has been signed by Bayern Munich. Video in SM thread.

Basically Marinovic said it's very tough. Local players don't give a fudge about your reputation or what you have done overseas. This is Germany, and they won't think twice to nail you in a brutal tackle, even team mates in practice.

So yes Rogerson could well be having a "period of adjustment". Jena actually play SM's old side Unterhaching next week in Liga 3. The fact that his ex Welnix team mate McGarry, in comparison is getting minutes already in the Eredivisie, may just be more a reflection that Dutch top flight has dropped in quality - as mentioned by others.

I spoke to Nati Hailemariam about Germany once and he said pretty much the same thing, starting spots are a valuable chance to be seen by scouts from bigger clubs so training sessions are every man for himself and if you get hurt in a tackle that's your problem.

Seems to have recovered from his injury troubles and subsequent surgery and is back playing again, albeit for the reserve team who play in the 5th tier Oberliga Nordost-Süd.

Scored in his comeback match, getting 75 minutes against FSV 63 Luckenwalde which finished 2-2

Got 55 minutes on the weekend in a 4-2 loss at home to FC Eilenburg. His replacement scored not long after coming on.

Only five games left in the season, and not a realistic goal to crack the first team as it stands, so probably a good goal just to knuckle down and make the most of these next few games and see what happens. Still got a contract till the end of next season by the looks, so he'll be looking for a strong preseason and hopefully he remains injury free and can kick on from there.

First team are a possibility to be relegated from 3. Liga to Regionaliga (4th tier) so that could mean some players leave, increasing Rogerson’s chances of first team playing time.

Zeiss Jena, are 1 point above the drop zone with 3 rounds left in 3. Liga. Had been mired in bottom two most of the season, but their recent form has actually been pretty good, so may well survive.
