They got relegated.

Well done to Nate Winkel (A Wellingtonian) who was key to getting the lad a trial there I believe.

US, what were Milne and Linday's Junior clubs prior to a single season at Central for an attempt at Nike cup glory ?

WYNRS of course! The only other place in NZ that ever produced any decent footballers, ever.

They finished bottom of the Liga Sagres (top division) last season and will start life in the Liga da Honra (second division) this season. They should've actually been relegated the previous season but were saved when Estrela Amadora were sent to the Segunda Diviso (third tier) instead for match-fixing.

OS Belenenses is the third biggest club in Lisbon (after Benfica and Sporting) and have tidy stadium and setup. The club had the dubious honour of having Freddy Adu on loan for the first half of the season before they sent him back to Benfica.

I think it'll be a good move for him.

This is great news. There's a lot of young New Zealanders making their way in to professional football now. Keat, Henderson, Gleeson, Rowe. Before this year I hadn't followed too much outside of the Phoenix and All Whites but I am pleasantly surprised by the number of guys getting opportunities. Can't wait for the NZ U20 to start playing some games with a full strength line up. Plenty of potential there.

I think we have to start getting beyond guys just getting signed, what we want is regular performances at first team level, these guys aren't THAT young (3/4 aren't even in U20 age group).  Being signed is only the very beginning.  Let's hope he can earn a pro contract, the fact that he speaks some Portuguese is a definite positive!

But isn't this guy 17, 18? He seems to be one of the younger ones overseas, except maybe Wood.

I found an article in portuguese telling that belenenses officials denied any signing of luis esteves.....

Quem no far parte do grupo Lus Esteves. O jovem neozelands, de 18 anos, prestou declaraes ao Daily Post a revelar que est em Portugal para assinar pelo Belenenses, cenrio desmentido a Record por uma fonte do clube.

Who will not be part of the group is Luis Esteves. The young New Zealander, 18, gave evidence to the "Daily Post" to reveal who is in Portugal to sign for Belenenses, scene belied the Record by a club source.

I hope he signed.
We need more kiwis overseas,I'm very disappointed about these players(like Gebreezgiher,Coombes,Hayne and now Esteves) who go on trial and finally don't sign.
Good luck Luis

And to get a few things into perspective, Luis actually played for Ngongotaha AFC in the Federation league before moving to Auckland - he is one of several talented Ngongotaha kids that have played senior football at 14 or 15 and then been grabbed by bigger teams (Joe Simpkins at Waikato AFC, Tim Schaeffers, Team wellington, also had trials for a few clubs in the UK

After 4 or 5 years of being settled here I don't think it's unreasonable to call him a Wellingtonian is it ?

I just thought it was clutching at straws to try and claim that one had a wellington influence

I suspect it's longer than Estevez has spent at Auckland/Central.

To be fair, the Rotorua Daily Post article mentions only playing for the juniors and "hoping to sign as a pro" one day.
He is listed as part of the Belenenses Juniores (Junior) squad for a game five days ago, though he never took the field (unused sub) understandable after only arriving on a jet a few days before:
Casa Pia v Belenenses Juniors,
Pina Manique Stadium, August 4, 2010, 19:00.
Private game, season 2010/2011.  The teams lined up:
Casa Pia: Crespo; Tiago Pedrosa, Brulio, Joo Coito e Zinho; Amar, Hugo Bral, Gonalo e Artur Loureno; Marco Neves e Rui Augusto.  Unused: Fbio (goal), Joo Costa (Goal), Csar, Marinheiro, Oumar, Canha, Vidal, Rben Guerreiro, Carlos Daniel, Hlder Lemos, Fasca, Pedro Augusto, Pauleta, Cludio, Telmo e Rui Monteiro.  Treinador: Jos Viriato. Coach: Jos Viriato.
Belenenses (juniores): Adolfo; Fbio Carvalho, Michael, Filipe e Frias; Didi, Castanheira, Diogo Freitas e Viegas; Fbio Magalhes e Rodrigo Parreira.
Unused: Hugo, Iuri, Joo Mendes, Joo Nuno, Benny, Diogo Pires, Andr Costa, Tiago Silva, Wilson, Faduley, Tiago Dias, Kevin, Lus Esteves, Alex Costa, Miguel Filipe, Jos Pratas e Murilo.  Treinador: Rui Santos. Coach: Rui Santos.
Golos: 1-0, Amar (3'); 2-0, Artur Loureno (15'); 2-1, Filipe (25'); 3-1, Rben Guerreiro (60'); 3-2, Wilson (65'); 4-2, Pauleta (77'); 5-2, Cludio (80'); 6-2, Cludio (85'); 6-3, Murilo (97'). Goals: 1-0, Amar (3 '), 2-0, Arthur Lawrence (15') 2-1, Filipe (25 ') 3-1, Reuben Warrior (60') 3-2, Wilson ( 65 ') 4-2, Pauleta (77') 5-2, Claudio (80 ') 6-2, Claudio (85') 6-3, Murilo (97 ').
Lol, there's a guy called Kevin. Just Kevin as well. No first or last name. Kinda like Pele or Zico but it's Kevin.

Its no longer a problem.

Almost certainly Brazilian as it's quite common for them to have Anglo-style nicknames. It's definitely not a Portuguese thing.

If Luis Esteves is now a Beleneses player then that's a good move for him.

Does anyone know if Luis is still with Portland Timbers? Always thought it was a real shame it didn't work out at Belenenses for him. Portugal, like the Netherlands, is a fantastic league for young Kiwis to make their way in.
