Despite finishing 8th (of 8) in the CPL last season, and by virtue of finishing runners up in the Canadian Championship (behind Vancouver Whitecaps, who qualified through the MLS) Vancouver FC have qualified for the CONCACAF Champions Cup which kicks off next month. A tough ask in Round One where they'll take on Liga MX side Cruz Azul.
Might not be every Nix's fan favourite, after emotively sledging a prone Oluwayemi at the ROF last season, but think he was a bit unlucky not to get more chances with AFC in the A League.
Age-group international Luis Toomey has made his club debut for Vancouver FC against seven-time CONCACAF Champions Cup winners Cruz Azul.
Toomey (24) joined the Canadian Premier League side in January after his departure from men’s A-League club Auckland FC in July.
His first match was a baptism of fire for Vancouver, playing in the CONCACAF Champions Cup for the first time, after finishing runners-up in last season’s Canadian Championship.
They were beaten 3-0 by Cruz Azul, who play in Mexico’s top-tier Liga MX.
Toomey started in midfield and played 70 minutes in front of Vancouver’s home fans, who filled Willoughby Stadium to its 6,500 capacity.
The teams play the second leg of the cup tie in Mexico next week.
