Full game in another Red Star canter. This time 4-0.

RS had 4 Serbians starting (in their first league game 2), Napredak had 11! Vojvodina last week had 10 Serbians plus a guy from
Montenegro.

It's all about the UCL.

Another class performance as per. A lenient person would give him two assists - one was a shot that deflected off striker Krasso for a goal, and another was a brilliant bit of skill and a cross which deflected into Mijatović, who put it away

Some online saying he could break Crvena Zvezda’s record departure fee

Transfermarkt will give him the assist for that Krasso goal. 😏

Lets see how he goes in the UCL (hopefully very well). That's where he'll be scouted.

All things going well we could have kiwis in every top 5 league in the next few years:

- Wood/Dibley-Dias: EPL
- Cacace: Serie A
- Singh: BuLi
- Stamenic: ???
- Garbett/Bell: ???

KI Klaksvik - the fairytale Faroese side that have knocked out Ferencvaros and BK Häcken from the Champions League and currently lead Molde 2-1 on aggregate - lost this morning to end their hopes of becoming the first European side since the 1940s to win every league match in a season. They were sitting on 16 wins from 16.

I guess that's the only domestic challenge to aim for for Crvena zvezda, they've done the unbeaten twice in three seasons, done the 100-point season twice in three seasons and have realistically already won the league this season. They almost did it in 20/21 when they only drew three matches and got 108 points.

As you say, all eyes on Champions League, early departure could make for a boring season of regular domestic thrashings.

Realistically it's going to be tough for Red Star to get out of the UCL group. Their first game could be quite a shock after cruising through the Serbian league!

But there is always the Europa League for some interest, post Xmas if they fail to get out of their UCL pool.

Would hope he is out of that league and onto better things before he could say a sentence in Serbian

Me too! That being said, from memory when he was being signed the Red Star fans weren't too enthusiastic and there were question marks as to how much playing time he'd get.
The fact that he's straight into the side is encouraging. Best case scenario is that he cleans up all domestic trophies up for grabs, and helps them out of the group stages of the UCL with some great performances and is sold in the summer for a tidy sum, and ends up playing in one of the top 5 leagues.

Full game in a 3-0 win. Lowest number of goals RS have scored this season. 4W from 4.

Red Star got a tight game indeed. A 3-2 loss. It won't be an unbeaten domestic season after all. They slip to 2nd.

Stamenic off at 84 mins (3-1). Socceroo Degenek hauled off at HT (2-0 Vozdovac).

UCL draw this week?

Flying Kiwis.

Massive shocker in Serbia... Red Star lost. This was the first time that Marko Stamenic has experienced anything other than a victory at the club, including preseason. They went down 3-2 against Voždovac and if you don’t realise what a big deal that is know that last season Crvena zvezda won the Serbian SuperLiga by going undefeated throughout the entire campaign – winning 30 of their 37 games and drawing the rest. Goal difference of +77. They were 22 points clear of the nearest challenger. The last time that Red Star lost a league game was 22 months ago and they’d been on a remarkable 65-game unbeaten streak.

But no longer. They’re just gonna have to start counting up from zero again as they were unable to haul back fellow Belgrade club Voždovac after falling into a 3-0 hole. Zvezda conceded in only the fifth minute when Milos Degenek lost possession and a back-tracking Marko Stamenic wasn’t able to prevent the shot from Borisav Burmaz, who blasted it into the roof of the net. Stamenic lined up a long shot of his own ten mins later, seeking to fix that situation, but it flew just wide of the post. There were plenty more Red Star chances where that came from but everyone kept trying to blast the leather off the ball rather than worrying about placement so the keeper wasn’t really getting tested.

They missed a golden one from just in front of the penalty spot late in the first half. That should’ve been 1-1. Instead Voždovac scored a brilliant second goal from a direct move that began with the resulting goal kick. Pumped it long then Mihajlo Neskovic did the rest. Red Star basically set up siege warfare in the second half but before they could get a goal back, they conceded a third as defender Aleksandar Dragovic misplayed a long ball to allow Danilo Teodorovic to run through and score. Huge trouble for Crvena zvezda.

Should add here that Stamenic was huge for them. Lots of touches in the midfield trying to keep things moving, he completed 61/63 passes before being subbed off with five to play in order to get another attacker out there. By then it was 3-1 because Milan Rodic had guided home a header from a corner kick (amidst copious flare smoke). In the 89th minute they were temporarily denied a second by a goal-line handball. Red card and a penalty. Guelor Kanga buried the spot kick to make it 3-2... but ten minutes of stoppage time didn’t provide them with a third. 3-2 to Voždovac. Somehow you get the idea that Red Star will bounce back from this with a vengeance though.

Drawn in group G of the UCL.
They got:

Man City, Leipzig, and Young Boys.

Funny to see Stamenic up against Man City again. Also gonna be hard to top Leipzig for 2nd place and a spot in the knockouts.

There are tougher groups. His old club FCK have drawn Bayern and Man U. But yes if you were a betting man, you'd go with Red Star playing Europa League in 2024.

Fascinating to see if Stamenic is a better player in the UCL 2nd time around.

Stamenic full game in a 2-1 win.

UCL draw is out. First game Red Star go to the Emirates 20th Sept.
That will be a step up from the Serbian league!

So much for an unbeaten Serbian season. Red Star lose again. This time 2-1. Stamenic off at 78 mins (2-1). Niggly affair with 12 yellows, though no reds.

Socceroo Degenek an unused sub.

Red Star travel to champions Man City to start their UCL campaign midweek, so may have rested a few.

Slept through it, rather unforgivably. Sounds like he had a bit of an underwhelming performance for his standards, especially defensively. Zvezda fans are remaining very positive about the team makeup, even despite three losses in a row

I thought he contained Foden well as he was clearly assigned to defend him, I thought he was a lot more agile and less lethargic than in last Man City meeting.

Honestly, he looked quite good in context, basically against the best of the best. There was a moment where he was practically through on goal but his teammate messed it up by not passing. He looked fit and alert, but Man City were totally dominant for most periods as you'd expect.

The Woodsman & Notts Forest travel to the Etihad in a few days. That will be some Kiwi context.

RB Leipzig beat Young Boys 3-1, in Switzerland in the other game.
Red Star verus Leipzig loom as the crunch ties for Stamenic & his mates, in the battle for 2nd in the pool. But before then 5th Oct in Belgrade at home against Young Boys, already looks must win.

The 171st football Belgrade derby between the country's two biggest clubs, Partizan and Red Star (Crvena Zvezda), known as "the Eternal Derby," that was scheduled for Wednesday will have to wait for a better moment.

Because the government declared Wednesday a day of mourning for Serbs killed in Kosovo and Metohija in clashes with the so-called Kosovo police, a decision was made to postpone this big match.

Due to the delicate situation, it was decided that this is not a time play football while the Serb people are experiencing difficult moments.

In a skirmish near Banjska in northern of Kosovo and Metohija, several Serbs were killed, and among them, a Red Star fan, S.N. (31) from Zvecan, to whom his fellow supporters are saying goodbye on social media.

Full 90 as they return to their winning ways, 1-0 the final score.

Could be an interesting time to be in Serbia. Troops massing at the Kosovo border. The possibility exists they will use the war in Ukraine as their opportunity to go back in. If they do it won’t be good.

I was thinking about whether or not I should write something...yes it sounds like a complext situation. Serbia with strong ties to Moscow and their long standing issues with Kosovo.
My only hope is that any country that has war/invasion/"special military ops" in mind will be deterred by the sanctions taken against Russia.
