Full game in a 5-0 win. Socceroo Degenek came on at HT, he's barely played of late.

Big news in the Serbian title race. Partizan lost away at lowly
Radnički Niš
(15th). Means the 2 big Belgrade clubs are now equal on points, with Red Star first on GD.

They play each other pre Christmas on 21st Dec, in a huge game obviously. Stamenic's first taste of the biggest match in Serbian club football.

RS's last UCL game (maybe for a few seasons) hosting Man City this week.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/world-game/133389975/all-white-marko-stameni-set-for-fourth-uefa-champions-league-clash-with-manchester-city

City have won all five of their group stage matches so far and are already safely secure in the round of 16, while Red Star have lost four and drawn one – at home against Switzerland’s Young Boys – and will finish fourth in group G no matter what happens this week.

The match comes with City slipping in the Premier League – their win over relegation battlers Luton Town on Sunday (Monday NZ time) was their first in five matches – and with a trip to Saudi Arabia for the FIFA Club World Cup looming next week, their coach Pep Guardiola could be tempted to make wholesale changes in Belgrade.

That would only ever-so-slightly increase the chances of an upset, whether a draw or an upset win for Red Star, but regardless of who takes the field, Stamenić is looking forward to welcoming City to his club’s 52,000-capacity stadium, known as the Marakana.

“They’re very special games to play in. A European game at the Marakana is a crazy experience in itself and to have Manchester City there – and to hopefully get three points against them – will be huge for not only the club, but also the fans and for the country as well.

“It's a huge occasion, and I can't wait for it to come.”

Stamenić’s meetings with City have carried extra meaning for his family, as his dad Niko is a die-hard supporter of the club.

But while they brought him up against some of the biggest names active in football today, he didn’t seek to swap shirts after his two matches last year, wanting to keep his as mementos from his first season playing in the Champions League.

That changed this season. “I swapped shirts with Rodri, mainly because at the time we were playing the same position and he’s an unbelievable player – he's probably the best form of his life right now.

“I took the opportunity to ask him for a shirt and I'm really happy to be able to hold that as a memory of playing against them.”

Unused sub alongside Degenek in a 2-3 loss. Man City rested a number of their big names. Disappointing Stamenic didn't get on in front of big crowd at home, in maybe Red Star's last UCL game in awhile.

So far, the Red Star move has seen his career stagnate (at best).

Really? He's made 18 appearances this season, including 4 in the Champions League (plus scoring once). Those are numbers he would never have gotten if he stayed at Copenhagen.

If anything, his career was stalling in Denmark where he couldn't get meaningful minutes at all.

What? It's done absolute wonders for his profile.

On the contrary, it's one of the best possible moves he could have made, guaranteeing regular gametime as well as footballing recognition in an environment reflecting his heritage

Stamenic did start 8 Superliga games for FCK last Danish season, though only one in 2023. However Copenhagen were openly disappointed he choose to leave (they offered him a new deal). We can only speculate whether he could have been a regular starter at FCK, this season.

But for sure it would be tougher there than at Red Star. FCK had a great pool stage in the UCL, through to the round of 16 after finishing 2nd in their pool behind Bayern, but ahead of Galatasaray and Man U. They are currently 3rd in the Superliga, 3 pts behind Midtjylland (1st). Just been knocked out of the Danish Cup by McCowatt's Silkeborg.

So unlike RS next year, FCK have European football, plus tougher league matches each week. So if Stamenic (if) had cracked their starting lineup there this season, he would be on a bigger stage than in Belgrade. Again a big IF, with lots of depth at Copenhagen.

He's in for some deep shark tonight. He commented that Partizan have been getting preferential treatment from referees this season, and Partizan fans are eating that up. Not what you want to be saying preceding one of the world's most violent derbies

Partizan win 2-1 and go top of the table. Stamenic an unused sub. Seems he’s bit out of favour at the moment not required 3 of Red Star's last 4 games.

Stamenic will be well aware of offers and may have signalled to club officials he's keen on a move. May have played his last game for the club. time will tell. Hopefully a bigger move ahead!

It would be a huge statement but I really hope it doesn’t happen. He has so much to offer in Europe and I hope to see him in New Zealand one day but I hope he’s north of 30 when that day arrives.

As an aside, do we know why he’s been riding the pie lately? He’s definitely good enough for that level. This happened in Copenhagen as well allegedly because he had signalled he wanted to leave. If he has an offer I hope it’s a good club in a better league. It’s been said before, he’s at a good club but the Serbian league is not where he needs to be to keep improving.

I would hope his next move is to a big 5 league. We don’t want any of our 1st choice European AWs coming to the ALM until they are north of 30. And those like Stamenic who have been through Ole, I reckon are the least likely on a move to the A League. It is (was) all about Europe in Porrirua.

Red Star made the big-money signing of South Korean international Hwang In-Beom (who is very good and a nailed-on starter), which coincided with a role change for Stamenic and a subsequent downturn in form for him. They didn't function well together. Barak Bakhar, feeling the pressure, made constant changes to his starting XI every week - it wasn't just Stamenic missing out the odd game thankfully

Injured, according to his dad - haven't seen anything online though.

So far, Crvena Zvezda's new coach has preferred Srjdan Mijailovic ahead of Marko, having coached him for years in the past. Mijailovic is a bit of a pre-2023 Alex Rufer type; very divisive among fans, scapegoated a bit as a boring DM but dependable, and I've seen fans a bit shocked that Marko can't get past him to get back into the starting XI

Some mins for Stamenic at last. On at 43 mins (RS up 1-0), in a 3-1 win. Presumably was an injury sub.

Partizan also won to be atop by one point. Next is the huge derby game. From memory Stamenic hasn't played in one yet.
