............they (RS) will have to go through Champions League qualifiers because Serbia’s coefficient has been damaged enough that there’s no more automatic group stage entry... largely because of how much Red Star themselves have underperformed in the continental stuff these past several years.

Stamenic appeared in 27 of those (Serbian) league games (plus eight more in other comps, including four UCL appearances). One goal in the SuperLiga. One goal in the Champions League. Eight combined yellow cards. He had a couple of stints on the outer but overall he played way more than expected in year one –
this being easily his most prominent season as a senior pro. He’s only just getting started.

Up Next: Four more UCL apps and he’ll surpass Wynton Rufer... just sayin’

From a footballing perspective his move to Serbia never seemed to make much sense (though I can see why from a family perspective). So I would love to see this Coventry move materialise. They finished 9th in the Championship last season. If he can hack it in the Championship that would be a huge personal achievement for him, and great for the All Whites too.

Nice find mate.

A €5 million fee is incredible business from Crvena zvezda too, who got him on a free transfer from FC Copenhagen.

Good move all round. Championship is an excellent level for the lad. Love it.

Should be a nice training compensation coming the way of Western Suburbs for a fee like that. A couple of hundred thousand at least?

Transfer Rumour - Marko Stamenic | Sky Blues Talk

Some Serbian fans ruing the deal. One said it's a strange decision to sell him now considering he could easily be worth 15 million next season. Others saying they expected him to sign at a higher level

If I've worked out the figures correctly - $308,000 NZD coming Western Suburbs way.

5% of the transfer fee (as the solidarity payment paid to all clubs between 12-23) from $8,800,000 NZD is $440,000.

$44,000 per year, and he was there from 2014-2020 (roughly - I haven't got exact timelines).

= A very good day for Olé.

Coventry is probs a perfect move for him in the Championship they're gonna be pushing for playoffs next season were a bit unlucky to miss out this year after an awful start to the season and needing to replace Gyokeres. But they've already used a lot of that money to invest in some good younger players and looks like continuing to do that with Stamenic. They should be lined up for more money from Gyokeres as it seems hes gonna get a massive money move to a big club this summer window.

Hilarious looking at the Coventry forum about this guy. They seem amazed that their little club is good enough to get him and are reassuring themselves that it’s not just a rumour by quoting our esteemed football pundits like Piney about the deal, who are just regurgitating the initial rumour 😂😂😂

We have a few more players we wouldn’t mind playing in the championship if you would like them Coventry 😂

That fee, by the way, would make him the second most expensive kiwi footballer ever, surpassing the £3.8m fee that West Ham paid for Winston Reid once upon a time (that works out to around €4.5m based on the current conversion rates). You can have three guesses as to who number one is and if you guess Chris Wood three times then you’re correct - he’s gone for at least triple this fee on three separate occasions. Leeds to Burnley (£15m), Burnley to Newcastle (£25m), and Newcastle to Nottingham Forest (£15m). That Premier League money is wild, mate.

A video going over the transfer and some takes on his performances
Going through the youtuber's video history, very Serbia orientated, so has likely watched a lot of games. Brings up a good point about how few professional games he's played considering his age. Hopefully, this means there's still a lot of room to grow.

A much bigger move than anticipated. Although I'd rather not see him out on loan straight away to Olympiacos to be fair...

Find this rumour a little strange and extremely unlikely.

Forest have a bloated squad and were deducted points under FFP last season.

They are still in the shark this current season and really have to unload one of their guns before 30.6 to have a chance of no further point deductions this season.

Signing a player to loan doesn’t wash with me with what’s going on at that club

Yeah could be a bit of a short sighted move if true, and Coventry was just used as leverage.

Bloated squad, particularly in the midfield, probably not long for the premier league, and financial fair play difficulties. Let alone being signed to be loaned.

If the goal is playing premier league surely Coventry probably was a better bet. Regular game time and end up a season hero being a key figure in getting the club promoted.

Forest did release 13 players 2 weeks ago (7 were from the Academy). And sounds like a £10M defender (who's never played a game for Forest) is going to be off loaded to Olympiacos permanently.

Whilst 21 yr old Brazilian defender Murillo is being courted by several clubs including Athletico Madrid. Forest value him at £70M!  Sounds like if Murillo is gone before June 30th, all Forest's problems will be sorted for now??

https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/28316633/nottingham-forest-release-thirteen-players-arter/

https://www.nottinghamforest.news/2024/06/11/nottingham-forest-set-to-offload-10m-player-whos-never-played-in-two-years-at-the-club/

https://www.nottinghamforest.news/2024/06/17/atletico-madrid-want-70m-rated-nottingham-forest-player-this-summer/

Stamenic might be cheap for them. If the rumour is true, I wonder if Nuno consulted elder statesmen Wood on Marko. Or did the Woodsman even bring Stamenic to Forest's attention, ie the AWs captain rates him as good enough to play in the EPL.

https://www.nottinghamforest.news/2024/06/17/football-finance-expert-shares-exactly-what-nottingham-forest-need-to-do-before-june-30th/

Despite, some concerns regarding the PSR situation, TBR Football’s football finance expert Adam Williams believes there are some positives – but only if Forest can raise £20 million.

He told Nottingham Forest News: “Before Forest can start budgeting for 2024-25, they need to navigate the rest of 2023-24.

“In Profit and Sustainability Rules terms, the season and the three-year rolling assessment window period is not over until 30th June.

“It is believed that Forest need to make up a PSR shortfall of around £20m before that date.

“Crucially, that £20m figure needs to be made up of ‘profit’ on player sales, not just the value of individual player sales themselves.

“If a club sells an academy player, his entire fee will count as pure profit. So the £47.5m Forest received for Brenan Johnson was added back in its entirety to Forest’s PSR calculation.

“But a player’s value in the books decreases over the length of their contract, so a player signed on a five-year contract for £5m would be valued at £5m in year one, £4m in year two, £3m in year three and so on.

“Any fee they recouped for him in that time would be offset against his book value, so if they sold him for £5m in year three, it would count as a £2m profit.”

Light at the end of the tunnel for Forest
Clearly, the fact that this situation is still at the forefront of the club’s mind represents a cause for concern.

However, there could be some light at the end of the tunnel for Forest – if they can comply and raise the relevant funds this month.

Williams explains that as Forest are now set to embark on a third season in the Premier League, the amount they’re allowed to lose is set to increase.

He continued: “Assuming they manage to make up their circa £20m deficit before 30th June, their PSR calculation will roll over to the next three-year assessment window, from 2022-23 to 2024-25.

“Their allowable loss limit will rise from £61m because they will have now spent three years in the Premier League, so will be allowed to lose £105m for the three years up to 2024-25.

“I expect they will have some room for manoeuvre after the 30th June deadline, therefore.

“But I equally wouldn’t be surprised if we saw an approach that elected to spread costs, minimise risk, and prevent the Premier League’s regulators from breathing down their necks.”

How Forest can solve PSR issue
There really is only one solution here and it’s to sell at least one of their star players.

Ultimately, it needs to be for profit and that leave Murillo the most vulnerable to a sale.

The Brazilian defender cost just £10 million and given that Forest now value Murillo at £70 million, a sale for him makes more sense.

Morgan Gibbs-White, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Taiwo Awoniyi have also been linked with moves away from the City Ground.

As an aside Olympiacos were 3rd in the Greek Super League last season, and will play in the UEFA Conference League Qualifiers.

Wherever he goes, looks like the Stokes Valley boy is definitely leaving Belgrade. Some exciting transfer stuff happening for young Kiwi footballers.

After finishing up his first season, Stamenic’s exit appears imminent.

Last week he was strongly linked with a move to Championship club Coventry City.

Red Star have even moved to replace Stamenic by signing Portugal-born Guinea-Bissau international midfielder Dálcio from Cyprus club Apoel.

You sure? Olympiacos is a step up from Red Star, and just won a European trophy. He'll be playing Europa League next season, if this goes through. Great move.

if he stayed put he'd be playing Champions League next season like he did this season, wouldn't he? I'd much rather he went to Coventry rather than somewhere to be loaned out. Feels like it is quite rare that a player signed to be immediately loaned ever makes it to the first team of that club.

The loan will consist of a large loan fee and will be to dampen the impact it has on profitability and sustainability rules, or PSR. These punish you with a points deduction if you lose more than 105 million pounds in a three-year cycle. Forest's transfer outlay is absolutely gigantic but they still want to improve the squad, hence a loan to their partner club Olympiakos. Seems likely there's a pathway in place after hearing from Forest fans

Crvena Zvezda aren't guaranteed UCL next season as their coefficient dropped, removing the league's automatic qualification place. They'll start in one of the qualification rounds (European football might still be guaranteed, as they'll likely start in a later round - can't check rn).

Serbia UEFA coefficient has dropped (mainly becaused Red Star) have been performing poorly in the UCL, so Serbia have lost their automatic UCL spot.
Red Star will have to try their luck through the UCL qualifiers.

If the Forest rumour is true, I wouldn't be surprised if Chris Wood has had some involvement. He's seen Stamenic plenty of times now up close in AWs camps/games. Wood's been in the EPL now, for it must be 6-7 seasons. He's knows the level well. If he's told Nuno, Marko has the ability to play in the EPL, then I'd fancy at some point Stamenic will get a chance. He may initially be loaned to Olympiacos, but as the season goes on Forest may have to sell further players including midfielders.

As with Paulsen if an EPL club comes with an offer you take it, back yourself to get a chance, and if not well the Greek Super League is still a good level. Then down the track if getting a look in at Forest seems unlikely, if not peeved Coventry some other Championship clubs will scout him.

From Niche Cache.

Basically what seems to have happened is this: Crvena zvezda received an offer from Coventry which they quickly accepted for a player they’d signed on a free just twelve months earlier. Stamenic was initially hesitant to accept but ended up agreeing to the move in principle. We don’t know the order of these next two events but Stamenic appears to have held back on completing the Coventry move as Nottingham Forest stepped in with a slightly bigger offer. Now it’s Nottingham Forest who’ve usurped the move. Here’s the general director of Crvena zvezda having a yarn about it...

Zvezdan Tercic: “We agreed on everything with Coventry but we didn't sign anything. Stamenic didn't want to go to the Championship, he exclusively wanted a move to the Premier League. A club from there contacted us, we negotiated, and I think that tomorrow we will sign the transfer for compensation of 5.5 million euros.”

There you go. By all accounts, Stamenic won’t be an immediate teammate of Chris Wood there but will be loaned to Olympiakos in Greece – a sister club of Forest due to their shared ownership. There are two reasons why that would happen. One is that they want to develop him within their own wider system for another year before unleashing him in the Premier League. Two is that they’re severely restricted by financial fair play rules right now so registering him could prove tricky (remember they nearly got relegated last season due to a points deduction).

Olympiakos finished third in the Greek division last season but won the Europa Conference League, beating Fiorentina 1-0 after extra time in the final. Stamenic won’t be adding to his Champions League appearances next season but he will have a chance to keep his league title winning streak up in a third consecutive country. That is... assuming this one actually happens. Best not get ahead of ourselves until the official channels start piping up.
