Interview here with Burnley chatting about the U17s, league, and his time so far at Burnley.

Key point I took is that he's trained with the Burnley first team a couple times so far - awesome benchmark - and he's been moved to a full-time midfielder (had heard he's been playing DM for the Burnley U18s, and NZ tried him out there for the U17s).

Bell/Stamenic/Dibley-Dias/Leuluai is some saucy depth at DM for the 2026 WC.

First thing that got me was the accent. 😆

But he sounds like a lock for New Zealand going forward which is great, and I love the versatility of him playing in midfield now too. In saying that, I was quietly hoping he'd still be playing at CB given the relative dearth of ball playing and technical CB's coming through.

Still very early days of course, but Bindon and Leuluai as a CB pairing for potentially the next three to four WC cycles would provide an excellent foundation, as well as stability for the national side. Add in the likes of Cacace, Bell, Stamenic, Singh, Garbett, Dibley-Dias, Waine etc and we're slowly cooking away nicely for like the next decade +!

I'm also aware of getting too far ahead of myself here with the up and comers and the expectations and all that carry on etc etc, but I will be looking forward to following his progress at Burnley over the next couple of seasons. Big potential in the lad.

Yes it's always a bit odd to hear anyone of Pacific heritage speak with a broad UK accent. In rugby the large Vunipola brothers (Welsh born but play for England) are similar.

Be very interesting to see how he goes in Indonesia, up against some world class youngsters. From memory he wasn't a big a standout in the U17 OFC tourney, considering he'd been a few years in the Man City youth system.

Hopefully the younger brothers might be useful footballers as well.

Big future ahead for this lad. Give it a listen.

Great to see young Kiwi's doing things in the world of football, and he sounds like a lock for New Zealand going forward as well, so I don't think we have to worry about other nations coming and tapping him on the shoulder. Great to see his level of passion and commitment at such a young age.

Intelligent & talented kid.
You love to see it!

As posted elsewhere sat on tbe pine for Burnley as they beat Derby County, 2-1 in the League Cup. McCowatt's ex Silkeborg team mate Oliver Sonne with the winning goal for the Clarets.

Be interesting to see if Greeny picks Leuluai for the U20 WC. Didn't go with the U20s for those 2 games in Chile a couple months ago. Going to be some tough selections for Chris G

He mostly from memory only played for Burnley U18s last season, not so much their U21s.

Quick note here at the end to say that Marley Leuluai has been playing a lot of football for the Burnley U21s lately. Between the Premier League 2, Premier League Cup, and National League Cup, he’s appeared in 21 of their 27 matches this season. Not a lot of starts, except in the cup games, but he’s in the squad pretty much every week having only turned 19yo in November. They’ve got him playing a mixture of centre-back and centre-midfield. Don’t forget he sat on the bench for the senior side in an EFL Cup game a few months ago too.

Leuluai is the third year of a three-year deal with the club (after previously coming up in the Manchester City academy – as well as a short trial stint with Stoke City in between). First year he was predominantly in the U18s and managed to sneak onto the U21s bench a couple of times. Second year he had a lot of injuries though was still able to step it up with four U21s appearances including his first start at that level. Now he’s aged out of the U18s but has proved himself worthy of permanent status in the U21s squad. So if you’ve been wondering what he’s been up to, it’s been steady progress behind the scenes.
