Where did this form come from?

Garbett on from 66 minutes. Is there one more opponent left between them and promotion?

Yes amazing form turnaround considering Breda (8th in Eerste Divisie) snuck into playoffs on GD

Garbett on at 66 mins (3-0)

2 legged Playoff final is against Excelsior (3rd last in Eredevisie) who crushed ADO Den Haag 7-1 in their 2nd leg (9-2 win on agg). So looks like they will be very tough

Pro/rel playoff final 1st leg. Breda host Excelsior (were 3rd last in the top flight Eredivisie).

Is Breda's 6th game in 18 days, and likely their toughest of the season. But it's been a remarkable few weeks for them, so they can't be ruled out for promotion.

As of the 82nd minute NAC Breda are winning 5-2. Our man has come on in the 67th minute. If they can grind this out it is a massive step towards promotion. Especially considering the opponents have two red cards which will be suspensions for the next game.

You would think if they could score one more then they are basically home and hosed.

And there it is. 6-2 is the final score. Last goal came in the 94th minute and assisted by Matt Garbett. Even though they play the second leg away you’ve got to think they will be promoted.

Surely hard to lose from there.

Will he get a crack at the top division or will he get loaned out? Has not been a starter of late, and one assumes reinforcements will go in the off season putting further pressure on him to keep his place.

Are there any stats on his goal/assist ratio per 90mins. How is that looking?

22/23 - 0.41 G+A per 90 from 1317 minutes played.

23/24 - 0.54 G+A per 90 from 1490 minutes played.

So yeah, he's going alright. 👍
He's missed 14 league games this season through injury as well. His numbers/contributions would have been far higher had that not been the case. But such is football.

Some truly astounding results by Breda the last few weeks. Upshot great news that Garbett should (tempting fate) be in the Dutch top flight next season.

Given last few weeks they shouldn’t need to strengthen their squad much if promoted.

0.54 is excellent... seems a little unfair that he is not starting more based on that.

Breda did hugely benefit from Excelsior going down to ten men at 38 mins (1-1) & then nine men at 72 mins (3-2). Garbett came on at 67 mins.

But surely with a 4 goal buffer, promotion to the Eredivisie is theirs. This again from a team that finished 8th in the 2nd tier, and only snuck into that spot and the playoffs on GD. Believe

From Niche Cache.

Maybe Garbett just doesn't suit the team balance/setup to start at the moment.

.....as we’ve established this has mostly been happening with Matt Garbett as a substitute. They haven’t won a game with him in the starting line-up since January... which coincidentally was a 3-2 win over FC Emmen in which Garbett scored.

Yes more high drama in a playoff series with plenty of that for Breda.

They were 4-0 down as early as 50 mins, with the tie locked up at 6-6 on aggregate!!
All the momentum with Excelsior. Young Irishman Troy Parrott with a hat trick

But Breda score at 58 mins, and somehow hang on for a 7-6 overall playoff win and promotion

Garbett came off the bench in first half with Breda 2-0 down

The 3 bonus late goals Breda got in the first leg when Excelsior went down to 9 men proving vital

Crazy playoff series for Breda and yeah will be very interesting to see how Garbett goes in the Eredevisie

From Flying Kiwis.

Garbett has one more year on his current contract, plus there’s a club option for an additional season.

To date there have been
six New Zealanders to have played in the Eredivisie. Fred de Jong got things going with Fortuna Sittard back in the early 90s, scoring six times in 53 appearances. Ivan Vicelich played for both Roda JC and RKC Waalwijk, making 148 apps overall (14 goals). Ryan Thomas is the main man with his 163 games spread out over two stints with PEC Zwolle and his time with PSV Eindhoven. Would be more but for injuries – he had his latest knee surgery at the start of this year so maybe he’ll be back next season, who knows.

There was also
Marco Rojas’ stint with SC Heerenveen which accounted for three goals from 23 games. And don’t forget Michael Woud (5 games) and James McGarry (6 games) working through those Willem II ranks together a few years back.

From Flying Kiwis. Sounds like Breda are going to setup with an attacking intent when they begin their return to the Eredivisie. Hopefully good news for box to box Garbett.

Matt Garbett: “That is something that suits me and sounds good to my ears. Attacking, applying pressure, and being on the ball a lot, these are things that suit my game. I think that is also what the coach wants and what we train a lot on. I fully agree with that strategy and I hope to play a major role in it. I am really looking forward to the new season and I hope to gain the confidence of the coach. We are going to play against very good teams, but I am excited for that. For me personally it is already very cool to play against teams like Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV.”

NAC Breda are back in the Eredivisie and are looking to bring a bright, attacking style of footy to the top league – which just so happens to suit Matthew Garbett nicely. Whether we actually see that approach or not, only time will tell. Garbs is currently away at the Olympics but he reckons he should be back in town for the first match of the new season, away to Groningen on August 10. That could change if NZ gets out of their group. Plus, if you didn’t already hear, NAC Breda have signed Max Balard from Central Coast Mariners to join Garbs in that midfield.

Edit: And he scores his first Eredivisie goal in the 58th minute!

Finishes 2-1 with Breda grabbing a late winner. Garbett will be absolutely buzzing!

I think Garbett is also the first Kiwi to score against one of the Big Three clubs.

Silly me, I knew Thomas scored twice in that KNVB Beker final in 2014, just couldn’t remember who it was against.

Cool stadium. No better feeling than scoring against Holland's biggest team, in front of your adoring home fans.

Exciting counter goal. Nice long pass from Balard. The Mariners are going to miss him. Looks like Garbett played basically as a left winger.

With Kiwi mates in the stadium to watch him play and the goal coming from his non-dominant left foot, he must be feeling elated with that performance.

As for his substitution, the gaffer could well have wanted a tactical change to a more defensive structure. However, could also be a precaution to his left elbow which took a heavy knock during the Guinea game at the Olympics.

Local French doctors suggested surgery, but the NZ medical team thought this was an over-exaggeration.
