Got 30 odd mins off the bench as Falkenberg drew 2-2 with Helsingborg.

Falkenberg were up 1-0 when he come on, scoring their 2nd a minute later through an OG.

Helsingborg came back and equalised in the 90th minute with their keeper scoring.

Edit - club's website gives 2nd goal to Garbett.

With 65 minutes played, the visitors broke through on the right after some poor defending. New Zealander Matthew Garbett came on board. Goalkeeper Edi Sylisufaj is substituted. And the kiwi made an immediate impression! Garbett rounded a HIF: er and got off a finish towards goal. The ball found its way into the goal via a HIF leg. What a start for young Garbett.

In the 81st minute, HIF reduced. Anthony van den Hurk broke free from his guard and rolled in 1-2. Three minutes later, HIF got a dangerous free kick just outside the penalty area. But the ball hit the wall. In the 85th minute, FFF replaced Allsvenskan debutant Mohammad Ahmadi. He replaced Christoffer Carlsson. And in the 90th minute, promoted goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard nodded in the equalizer. Suddenly, HIF had leveled off. There were no more goals. FFF lost their 2-0 lead and the match ended in a draw.

That first goal is a stunning hit. Love seeing it still rising when it hits the back of the net.

Tidy header from Anders and yeah, definitely an OG unfortunately for Garbett.

Nice story and he is obviously a talented prospect BUT this publicity strikes me as a hyperactive agent in overdrive. Good for Matthew that he has someone getting his name out there but a few minutes off the bench for a Div 1 Swedish club does not make you a Man City target. If I was this kid I would avoid the EPL. At his age he needs stability, somewhere where he will be getting lots of minutes on the pitch

There are so many stories of EPL clubs signing talented youngsters who then spend the best part of their best years being shuffled around Europe on loan. Man City can buy the Aguero’s of this world, they buy world class developed players. IMO Matthew should look at a good solid club in a lower league who develop and play young talent......going somewhere like Ajax would be a dream. The French league would be worth a look too, especially as he has a French passport. There are players as young as 17 who regularly start in Ligue1. It’s a good shop window for a bigger move later. Good luck Matthew, look forward to following your career.

I don’t think there is too much wrong with that, although not on the continent, Chris Wood was shopped around a bit before landing at Leeds then Burnley. Generally loan players get first team game time and they are sent away to develop in the hope they get good enough to play for the first team at their home club or attract a decent transfer fee.

Falkenbergs perhaps a little unlucky not to equalise - hit the post 3 times in 4 seconds!

Starting against Elfsborg (2nd on the table).

First league start I think.

Falkenbergs (15th & 2nd last) form hasn't been the worse with only 1 loss to top of the table Malmo in their last 5 games. Just needed to convert some of their 6 draws into wins (only 2).

After mins 19 mins, was looking awful at 4-0 down. Shades of AWs verus Japan a few years back.

However Falkenbergs, came back somewhat with two 2nd half goals to lose 4-2. Same score when Garbett subbed off at 71 mins.

His team do slip to the bottom, but is 3 teams only a point ahead of them.

Starts but is subbed at HT in a 0-3 home loss to IFK Göteborg (12th).

Falkenbergs down 0-2 at HT.

They are in a spot of bother now. 16th & last.

11 games to go to stave off relegation.

IFK Göteborg actually play Stamenic's Copenhagen (senior side not u19s) in a Europa League tie later this week.

Back to cold reality for Falkenbergs (last), with a 3-0 loss at Häcken (2nd).

Garbett subbed on at 83rd minute

Falkenbergs definitely in relegation trouble now. 5 points from safety with only 7 games left.

With that midweek cup result, Garbett scored his goal in 90th min as a starter, after his Nigerian team mate had scored 5!

Unused sub as Falkenbergs (15th of 16) score a critical 2-1 win over Örebro (10th).

Falkenbergs are 2 points from safety (bottom 2 automatically relegated) with 6 games left.

Next up a trip to bottom side Kalmar (equal on points at the moment). FYI Jesse Edge's Berga are also based in the city of Kalmar.

Unused sub in a 0-0 draw at last placed Helsingborg.

Do or die relegation matchup. Falkenbergs (24 pts), and remain 3rd last in the relegation playoff spot.

Helsingborg are 1 point behind (23 pts), Kalmar are 2nd last on GD (24 pts).

One round left.

Falkenbergs host 5th placed Mjällby, in their last game. Mjällby only have pride to play for.

Subbed on at 82nd min with score 2-2, in a 2-3 home loss to Mjallby

Mjallby score their 3rd in 90th min

Unfortunately that loss plus Kalmar managing a 0-0 draw, sees Falkenbergs relegated to Swedish 2nd tier

I guess if Garbett stays with the club, he should get more mins next season a division down

This week's Flying Kiwis. End of Swedish season wrap up.

"They needed to win against Mjallby on the final day and even if they did that they still needed other results to go their way. As it happens they conceded a late goal to lose 3-2 (chasing the game, fair enough, a draw was no use to them) and that didn’t matter anyway because Kalmar FF drew so they couldn’t have caught them no matter what they did. Thus Falkenbergs have been relegated to the second tier in Sweden.

Matt Garbett was subbed on in the 82nd minute with things looking desperate. After a good run of games off the bench (and two cheeky starts) back around August he was used far more sporadically as relegation because a serious threat, only playing three times for 35 combined minutes across the team’s final eight matches, including this one. Exciting game... just not the result that FFF needed.

Garbett played 13 total Allsvenskan matches (2 starts, 9 subs, 264 total mins). He also played four cup games including one start in September in which he scored. A reminder that this dude is only 18 years old and he has another couple of years on his initial contract. Which... makes this relegation a curious situation as obviously it’s a huge blow to the entire club, but also Garbett didn’t play as much down the stretch because of those struggles and the drop down a tier might mean more opportunities. Winston Reid’s breakthrough for West Ham came in the same circumstance. There have also been plenty of cases where the opposite was true but something to pay attention to either way.

What’s weird is that there’s now this magnetic draw for kiwi footy players to the Superettan (the second tier in Sweden). Matt Garbett’s been relegated to that level with Falkenbergs while Francis De Vries and Joel Stevens were just promoted to that level with Värnamo. Meeting in the middle.

However the one dude who was already in that division, Cameron Hogg at Umeå FC, only played three games as the backup goalkeeper (conceded 12 goals in those three games) and saw his team relegated to division one. Jesse Edge and Matt Conroy’s IFK Berga also got relegated from division one. Meanwhile the FC Torslanda x Ole Academy project finished second in their regional conference in division three and after winning their playoff semi-final, the playoff final was then cancelled amidst coronavirus restrictions so the Swedish FA just decided to promote everybody that was left – expanding Div2 by six teams in 2021. Dom Woolridge, Owen Parker-Price & Harry Edge were all playing there this year, along with Declan Edge and Dan Keat amongst the key staff. So... everybody either got promoted or relegated. Huh"
