Crocombe in goal.

Grimsby with a 1-0 win. Off to Brighton next, where they will be massive underdogs to continue their boys own FA Cup run.

Biggest game of Crocombe's career?
Grimsby (15th in the 4th tier) travel to Brighton (7th in the EPL) for their FA Cup quarter final.

Surely a bridge too far for Grimsby this time. Surely!

Going from not good enough for Melbourne Victory to an FA Cup game against high flying Brighton!

What a feeling.

Still must have been a double take to see Jared Gillet there too!

Another 1-1 draw. This time at Crawley (22nd).
Crocombe in goal.

Grimsby (15th, 48 pts) now in that no mans land, of safe from relegation, but no real chance of making the playoffs (13 points behind 7th). Same basically applies to Tzanev's Dons (16th, 46 pts), 2 points below Grimsby (2 games in hand on the Dons). 2 Kiwi keepers at 2 mid table L2 sides with not much to play for now.

Smith's Colchester (21st, 37 pts) though are still far from safe, only 5 pts & 2 spots above the drop zone. I'm sure CU will welcome a fit Smith back, to grind out the results they need to avoid relegation. 8 rounds left.

Edit - a 1-4 loss. Grimsby struggling for motivation to finish the season after that great FA Cup run?
7 games left and they are still 10 pts clear of the drop zone.

In goal for a 2-1 win.

Crocombe & Tzanev in a battle to be the 3rd AWs keeper for June friendlies? Sweden & one other.

Surely Woud will be overlooked.

Last game of the season & a Kiwi GK derby. Well will be if Tzanev gets a start.

Grimsby Town (12th) host Wimbledon (21st). Sympathies for Grimsby's no 2 keeper. Crocombe has played all 45 League Two games to date!

So Crocombe starts & Tzanev is on the bench for the Dons.
Max maybe with the inside running for no 3 GK spot for the AWs in June.

59 games! That's some season that is. Not a bad campaign for a Grimsby side promoted from the National League the season prior.

I note some in the comments seem to think this is his way of saying goodbye. May be something in that given he's off contract and no word as yet on a possible extension.

Sounds like a well deserved holiday is on the cards for him first up though after a herculean campaign from him this term.

Yes another clean sheet to complete the season, with a 1-0 win over the Dons. Grimsby finish up 11th, 14 pts off the promotion playoffs.

Be interesting to see what happens next for Crocombe. Maybe he has caught the eye of a bigger club in League One, or even The Championship.

Might explain the lack of a contract - he wanted more than they were offering and bigger fish were chatting.

Given his age and the fact he is clearly their number 1, there has to be a bit more to him not having a contract.

Meeiix decides against a contract extension with Grimsby Town.

Was a massive part of their promotion from the National League last season and subsequently played every single game of the Mariners campaign this term. Including that memorable FA Cup run which saw Grimsby make it through to the quarterfinals.

From Flying Kiwis. Might be the no 1 keeper for the AWs the next time they play. Especially if he nabs a starting spot higher up the English/Scottish football pyramid.

Max Crocombe: “I had a good chat with the manager and it’s nice that I’m able to leave on good terms. It’s been a great environment to play my football over the last two seasons and it’s been an absolutely amazing ride. When I signed, I don’t think anyone would have predicted how much success we were going to have as a Club during that time. It was amazing to play my small part in those achievements.

I want to thank everyone for their support during my time with the Club. My teammates, who I created such great bonds with. The staff, who have been brilliant from top to bottom – the gaffer, Doigy, Greg Howard, Steve Croudson, Jason, Andrew and Debbie and everyone else behind the scenes. And finally, the supporters, who have followed us up and down the country to support their team. They are a credit to themselves and the town. I’d like to wish the Club the very best of luck for the future. Grimsby Town will always hold a special place in my heart.”

GTFC manager Paul Hurst: “Max informed me yesterday that he’s decided to turn our offer down. He leaves us on good terms though, as we both have a lot of respect for each other, but we couldn’t quite come to an agreement and unfortunately that’s football sometimes which we both understand. He certainly played his part in the success we had over the last couple of seasons and helped create a lot of memories that we all share. I have nothing but good things to say about Max and I’ll certainly be watching with interest for the rest of his career. We would like to thank Max for his efforts in a Grimsby Town shirt and wish him well for the future.”

Crocombe has done an interview with Grimsby Live since then in which he said that he’d have been happy to stay at the club had it worked out that way, but that he was also feeling like it might be a good time to move on and that with GTFC putting pressure on a quick decision so that they can build for next season one way or the other he chose to step back from negotiations.

Alright then, so where’s he going? Ah now that’s something we’ll have to be patient with. There have been rumours about Scotland. Gotta imagine he has some leads if he’s rejecting a legitimate starting goalkeeping role.

From what I saw he looked way more assured than Sail. A big unit...

Needs to be in a better league though. If so he will be the number 1 for the all whites.

Awesome news, and good to see a continuation of Kiwi players moving to/getting promoted to higher leagues too.

Good age for a keeper - effectively coming in to his prime years now, and based off his 45 minutes against Qatar, he might even displace Sail before too long in the AW's set up. 🤞

BA were mid table 15th in League One last season. I remember a few years back they were in The Championship and had Socceroo Jackson Irvine with them.

Looking at Soccerway seems last season's starting keeper (2nd half of the 22/23 season) Scot Craig MacGillivray has moved on to MK Dons in League Two.
https://us.soccerway.com/teams/england/burton-albion-fc/764/

Seems AWs will play next in October, if he's the starting keeper at BA and the AWs games are in Europe yipe he could well upsurp Sail. But Crocombe might have that conundrum of being at a new club establishing himself in a league that doesn't break for FIFA windows. Potentially tricky situation, and so may have to choose club over country. This new deal is a big one in his career to date.
