Starting as Minny (5th, 48 pts, -2 GD) travel to LA Galaxy (7th, 47 pts, -4 GD). Last match of regular season.

Huge game re qualifying for the playoffs. Top 7 teams make Western Conference playoffs.

Either team could be overtaken for a playoff spot by Real Salt Lake (8th, 45 pts, 0 GD) or LAFC (9th, 45pts, +5 GD).

That's presuming, if Minny lose, and either RSL or LAFC with wins today could bump them out on GD?? Or maybe it's head to head results that matter??

RSL are away to Sporting KC (2nd).
LAFC are away to Colorado (3rd).

a 3 all draw, so do they stay in play offs?
Yep, they qualify for the play offs

Yes, they finished 5th seed in the Western Conference, and 11th out of all 27 teams in the Supporters’ Shield, so they’ll play Tuiloma’s Portland away in the first round of WC Playoffs, as it’s 2v7, 3v6 and 4v5, with 1st getting a bye. The winner of the 4v5 game then plays away to 1st seed (Anthony Hudson’s former employers, the Colorado Rapids)

Yipe Minny (5th) are in the playoffs. A loss would have seen them out.

Galaxy (8th) miss out with the draw, as RSL (7th) overtake them on GD with a 1-0 win in Kansas.

This weeks' Flying Kiwis.

Decision day. Last round of the regular season. Minnesota United away to Los Angeles Galaxy with both teams right on the edge of the playoffs, knowing that a win and they’d be in but defeat, or even a draw depending on other results, could be fatal to their chances. All the Western Conference games kicked off at the same time so there’d be a lot of screen-glancing on each bench throughout.
You could tell it was a game heavy on the implications because it took a mere two minutes before Boxy’s CB partner Bakaye Dibassy got booked for getting a little exuberant in the challenge.

Not a lot else going on early doors though – Minny scrambling to keep the Galaxy from attacking at pace and otherwise the two sides cancelled each other out. Adrien Hunou did put the ball in the net for the Loons on 22’ with a mint finish running in behind but he was flagged offside. Except he didn’t agree with the call, wagging his finger all over the show, he really didn’t agree... and eventually the VAR suggested it may be worth a look. The ref rushed over and the goal was given. 1-0 to Minnesota United. Exactly what they needed.

As per, when Manny Reynoso was involved (he had a cheeky backheel that opened things up for the goal earlier in the move), the Loons were a danger. Granted Tyler Miller had to be at his best to turn a Kévin Cabral thunder volley wide of his post on 32’. Enormous save there because two minutes later Michael Boxall tried for his own acrobatic volley (mixed with some Steven Adams low post moves) at corner kick time and Robin Lod swooped in to finish in close. 2-0 to the Loons and that’s a Boxy assist.

https://twitter.com/i/status/1457699535594135555

Unfortunately they conceded in stoppage time and only Miller kept it from being 2-2 before they could get back into the sheds and reassess things. Galaxy were playing for their season too, remember. The reassessing chats didn’t work either because LAG came out on top second half and a sharp finish from Chicharito on 51’ had things all even again. Results elsewhere meant that at this stage a draw was enough for Minnesota but all room for comfort was slipping away.

This match was nuts. Minnesota steadied things and retook the lead through an own goal on 62’... but the Galaxy responded in the 75th as Chicharito volleyed his second attempt under Miller’s reach for 3-3. Still scores elsewhere held in both these teams’ favour. LAFC trailled most of the way to Colorado in what ended as a 5-2 defeat, while Sporting KC had held Real Salt Lake scoreless to that point. An RSL goal would change everything but as it stood, counting down into the last ten minutes, Minnesota were where they needed to be and were busy trying to take the steam out of things. In doing so won they a penalty for handball... only Franco Frangapane hit the post so easy come, easy go.

Minny immediately subbed on a defender for a forward in response to the penalty miss, meanwhile Real Salt Lake scored a dramatic late winner in that game which caused some emotional carnage because it meant that the loser of this one was out. Minnesota with six mins of stoppage time to survive knowing an LA Galaxy goal would eliminate them. Cue some utterly nerve-shattering stuff. Miller with a couple more low saves to make, no margin for error. Time ticking down. Minnesota with a flat back five now. Time wasting substitution. Pump it long. And finally they got there, 3-3 the final score. Minnesota United are back in the playoffs.

And who are they playing when they get there? The Portland Timbers of course, the two kiwis in the MLS playoffs obviously were gonna have to play each other first round... at least there’s one guaranteed in the next round now.

Big Kiwi playoff match up in the MLS. Well sort of.

Boxall involved in 2 games from AWs, plus long trip back from UAE and starts against Portland.

Tuiloma with about 3 weeks off, consigned to the bench for Timbers, as Minnesota visit Oregon for knockout football.

Fine but cool 8 degrees C in Portland.

The winner will travel to Denver to play Colorado Rapids, who of course once had a strong Kiwi flavour. Looks like Neil Emblen (assistant coach & Jase Kim (video analyst) are still with the Rapids, from Huddo's time there.

Timbers do it pretty easily 3-1. BT didn’t get on. They’ll play in Denver in 4 days, Western Conference semi. It’ll be fresh in Colorado

Boxy 2 weeks NZ MIQ with wife and 2 young kids, if they can find a slot in the lottery? Surely even with that, a NZ summer and fitness camp with Niko has got to be more attractive than a snow frozen Minny winter

They could both have some AWs games in January they’ll need to keep a base level fitness for. 2 guys who could be racking up some air miles next few months through to March OFC tourney, with next MLS season to start late Feb 2022.

Minnesota have their first home game of the MLS season, later today hosting Nashville.

Be interesting to see what arrangement Hay has managed to negotiate with their clubs re OFC Tourney for Boxall snr & Tuiloma. Portland being down on CBs (two first choice guys injured) likely reluctant to release Bill T outside FIFA window dates.

MLS is pretty much playing through the March FIFA window (21-30th March). AWs PNG & Fiji games are 18th & 21st.

Minnesota have games 13th & 19th March, plus 2nd April
Portland play 12th, 19th & 26th March, plus 3rd April

Minny (12th in the West) travel to in form New York Red Bulls (3rd in the East).

Boxall is starting! So his 'injured unavailable' status for AWs looks far from legit. Coach Heath playing funny buggers again. Perhaps Hay has just let it slide, as he has plenty of CB depth with Reid, Smith, Tuiloma, Pijnaker & Boxall jnr to get the job done. Plus Payne & De Vries could move across in need.

Hay maybe playing the long game to make sure Boxall snr gets 2-3 weeks off, for training camp/friendly etc in June (mid season MLS) leading into the Intercontinental Playoff. But if he gets a few CB injuries in OFC tourney, he'll pick up the phone to Heath for a 'chat'

I wonder what his thoughts on the matter are. He’s 33, will be 34 during the World Cup, so you’d have to say this is his last shot at one, so missing essentially the entire qualification process must do his chances of being first choice in future a big blow.

Pijnaker very much seems to be the future on the left side, but is only playing LoI atm, so shouldn’t be first choice, so it’s probably between Tuiloma and Boxall, as Reid seems a given despite his injuries and lack of club. Tuiloma had an immense game yesterday for Portland playing as a left-sided CB against an Austin team who had scored 10 goals in their first two games, so he could well set the benchmark for first choice once he comes in to the camp. If he continues that in a successful OFC qualifying tournament, be difficult to throw the starting spot over to Boxall in an intercontinental playoff.

I think for IC playoff and WC if AWs make it, Hay will revert to a back 5. So that will give Boxall snr a lifetime. Maybe he’s happy to be unavailable as helps give younger bro a shot at impressing Hay! Nikko Boxall may not have been picked if his older bro, was good to go.

And yes from match highlights, Tuiloma had a huge game for Portland yesterday, at both ends of the pitch. Ironic thing is that Timbers have their 2 first choice CBs out injured, yet seems they haven't tried to stop Billy T from going to Qatar, unlike Minny with Boxall.

Danny Hay, from last Wednesday

"Yeah, look, you would've seen that Boxy played the first game of the MLS season. He'd really been carrying a groin injury for a long period of time. That's dating back to October, November last year when we brought him in, and he was still struggling in January.

"It feels like he's getting on top of it now, but obviously we had to take into account the thoughts of Minnesota United. Ideally, we wanted to have him here right from the word go. They weren't so keen about that. Then we had to take into account, "Do we bring somebody like Boxy who's obviously not one of our younger squad members, but do we fly him all the way across to potentially be involved in one game?" Potentially two, but most likely one.

"I think that was just a little bit of negotiating and talking with the sporting director there at Minnesota United. They were quite keen to keep hold of him. Look, we've agreed that we'll put him on standby and look, if we need him, we'll have to do the SOS emergency flight and get him over here, but touch wood, hopefully we can get by without having to fly him, which is what is an enormous distance from the States to this part of the world."

Fair enough, and yes it is a very long 20+ hour journey from Minny all the way to the Middle East.

Which makes decision to call him up for Nov friendlies (he played against The Gambia), just prior MU's MLS knockout playoff loss against Portland all the more strange - especially if he had this groin problem then. From memory Tuiloma on the other hand stayed stateside, ie gave AWs Nov games a miss.

So you call Boxall up for international friendlies, at the knockout stages of his club season, seeing him do 40+ hours of travelling. But then you bypass him for effective knockout World Cup qualifiers, when his new club season has only just started. Bit odd.

However Hay is likely right, AWs should be fine without him. And by early June hopefully he's over this niggle, and Heath returns the favour by releasing Boxall for a good 2-3 week stretch as AWs go into camp for IC playoff.

Edit - it's 0-0 at HT in New York.
