I tweeted the club yesterday, asking if he had signed for the club as I couldn't see him on the club's roster on the USL website.

OC Nor'easters @OCNoreasters

@Ryans_Rovers Michael has joined us but he will not be in Ocean City for a couple of weeks. Once he is here we will register him with USL.

Yep, Michael is a Marlborough boy.

The Nor'easters went down to an Philadelphia Union 2-1 in the US Open Cup, with the Union needing an injury time winner to avoid extra time.

He has been added to the roster on the USL website and tweeted he was playing today. But he wasn't the starting keeper, so I guess was on the bench.

Who suggested this guy for the Nix? 4th tier USA is basically central league so thats what ppl are reporting on here!

And who was your suggestion, Spoonley? Marinovic? The latter is at the lowest level I'd say but they're all pretty low. Doesn't mean they're not good. Michael O'Keefe is an All White.

I think the key thing for Michael is retaining his amateur status whilst studying.

From Wiki: The USL Premier Development League (commonly known as the PDL) is the pro development league of the United Soccer Leagues in the United States, Canada, and Bermuda, forming part of the American Soccer Pyramid. It is currently the top-level men's amateur soccer competition in the United States, and has 62 teams competing in four conferences, split into nine regional divisions; unofficially, it is considered to be the fourth tier of competition, behind Major League Soccer, the North American Soccer League and the USL Professional Division, and roughly equal with the National Premier Soccer League.
Forest City London are the reigning PDL champions, having defeated the Carolina Dynamo 2-1 in the 2012 PDL Championship game on August 4, 2012.
While not strictly a "professional" league in the sense that the majority of players do not receive payment, the PDL prides itself on its professionalism in terms of its organization and the way the league is run, and its dedication to developing young soccer players, preparing them for future careers in professional leagues in the United States and elsewhere. As PDL seasons take place during the summer months, the player pool is drawn mainly from elite NCAA college soccer players seeking to continue playing high-level soccer during their summer break, which they can do while still maintaining their college eligibility.

It's harder for young goalkeepers to break into higher teams too. If you want regular game time then you have to play at a club that is looking for a first choice keeper, and are willing to go for one with less experience. Young players in other positions can train hard, impress in reserve games, get chances off the bench and so on. Outfield players tend to get injured and suspended (not to mention fatigued) more than keepers too so there's more possibility to get starts even if you aren't first choice. Would be different if he came to the Nix though because Glenn Moss is made of glass!

People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis. You can't trust people.

Thanks. I will take your opinion under advisement.

o'keefe is probably at that level just below MLS standard and is probably just hanging out in the states waiting for an injury cover call up to an MLS roster.  until that happens, it wouldn't be sensible to ruin any chances of being able to study - stretford is right, you can't take cash and study, so probably not fair to judge him on the 4th tier thing.

There in lies the difference

He's played for the All Whites. He's played for the Oly Whites. He's overseas. More deserving than another certain Kiwi goalie..

no it's the 4th tier in the US

" In the past four seasons, 137 of the 194 players selected in the SuperDraft have played in the PDL, a remarkable 71 percent of selections." http://pdl.uslsoccer.com/home/689162.html

It is a development league and has a lot of eyes on it from the MLS teams. Some divisions include u23 sides from MLS teams. And as 2nd Best has said, he is using it as a chance to get some games under his belt before looking at trialling in Europe.

Wasn't arguing with you, just giving a definitive answer to what happened with him... do you need a cuddle, your very argumentative and quick to jump.

Just give up Trip on been right all the time, you've quickly become the most tiresome person on these forums.

On the bench again, as the Nor'easters continue the unbeaten start to the season with a 3-1 win over Baltimore Bohemians. Sounds like the starting keeper had a blinder.

Ended up with as a 2-0 win.

Ocean City survived some scares with Michael O’Keeffe, New Zealand Olympian from the 2012 London Games, looking confident and allowing Ocean City to use all their allotted substitutions and get the fringe players some good minutes.

Coach Tim Oswald was happy with the result after the game, “We needed a win to keep our momentum going and a clean sheet for O’Keeffe was vital. Hopefully our performance will be better on Sunday but I would take the same result.”
