He's a goalkeeper correct?

A three year contract is nothing to be sneezed at... the club clearly see him as a long term prospect.

Three years is a "wow" contract. Clearly Michael has a big future. Great news for him and NZ football in general

Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

Awesome contract. Do you think we can change formation to have more goalkeepers on the pitch to fit all our best players on?

I've heard he could be a solid not-a-striker.

Currently the starting goalkeeper for the Sunderland U23s, and following the release of Portuguese goalkeeper Mika, Woud is now the third-choice goalkeeper at the club behind Robbin Ruiter and Jason Steele. Considering how shark those two have been, and maybe as Sunderland's relegation is eventually confirmed, he may well get a chance in the first team. Well done!

Last game they played was a 5-0 defeat to Chelsea U23s. Not so well done

19 years old and straight to a first team contract for two years at Willem II (with club option to extend another two).

Started in goal this morning in Willem II's home pre-season friendly against leading Belgian club Gent (fourth in last season's Belgian league). Played the whole match.

James McGarry played the second half.

https://www.willem-ii.nl/artikel/willem-ii-slaagt-...

Line-up: Woud, Dankerlui (60. Kok), Lewis (Van den Bogert), Heerkens (60. Ryan, 77. Lieftink), Abbel (45. McGarry), Lieftink (45. Saddiki), Llonch (45. Akkaynak), Crowley (60. Urbanski), Croux (60. Bogaers), Sol (60. Kristinsson), Abubakar (60. Coulibaly)

As a Kiwi with a Dutch father, it's just awesome having so many Kiwis playing in Holland now !!!

Woud is in a really good situation for a 19 year-old goalkeeper in terms of a chance to establish himself - he's straight onto a senior contract and the club has no experienced, established goalies.

The two goalies already at the club are also young and inexperienced:

Mattijs Branderhorst: 24 years old but only made his first team debut for Willem II on 15 October 2017 after several years at the club. Before that, he had only made five senior first team appearances in his career (on loan to MVV in 2015-16)

Timon Wellenreuther: 22 year-old German goalie who made 15 appearances in Willem's 34 league games last season. He was on the bench for Germany at the FIFA u-20 World Cup in NZ in 2015. Only made eight first team appearances at Schalke in his three seasons in the first team there. 33 appearances for Mallorca in Spain's Segunda Division on loan in 2015-16

Game finished 4-4. Maybe shipping 4 goals helps the Kiwis chances of future selection.

Hope this doesn’t get buried - Woud played the second half against a strong Borussia Dortmund side in a friendly in Spain, and apparently was immense - retweeted a sweet save of his if you want to check it out. McGarry not in the squad.

Lost 3-2 (conceded two goals that he couldn’t do anything about - first was sharkhouse defending and second was an incredible free kick) but played fantastically against the likes of Mario Götze, Jadon Sancho, Shinji Kagawa and Achraf Hakimi. What an opportunity for the lad!

James McGarry has made a couple appearances for Willem II already but Mike Woud has only sat on the bench for the first team so far. However he’s as close as he’s been to cracking it right now, with backup keeper Mattijs Branderhorst out injured at the moment he’s the number two for now. Similar opportunities may arise for James McGarry too, who is dealing with a little injury niggle picked up on training camp recently but with regular left back Diego Palacios away with Ecuador for the South American U20 champs there’s a spot there to play for. Should be a fun couple of weeks at Willem II then.

Willem II Goalkeeping coach Harald Wapenaar: “He had to get used to my way of working, but now he is making enormous strides. He is facing a great future. If you reach such a level at the age of 19, then the premier division is the minimum you can expect.”

Good news everyone! Willem II just sold their second/third goalkeeper to NEC Nijmegen. So it could be that Woud moves up the rank.

Both Woud and McGarry are on the bench in the KNVB cup semi final against AZ. 1-1 FT and currently 10 minutes into extra time with no goals added. Only one sub made by Willem II so far

Good watch tbh. Their left back Palacios got a nasty foot injury and was stretchered off in the 2nd half of ET, though McGarry didn't come on in his place. Wonder whether he's seen as more of a winger or a left back by Willem II

Permalink Permalink

Yeah fairly sure he’s played as a winger mostly, if not always. Going to pens now. Willem II had some close chances in ET including hitting the post.
