17 years old and starting / captaining for the shambolic Gold Coast.

He lived here for five years so would be eligable for NZ if we wanted him / he wanted us... having said that have not actually seen him play, so does any know if he's any good?

I saw him playing for the Australian U17 team. To be the youngest captain in the A league history, you have to be good. At the senior level he could switch allegiance either for NZ or Vanuatu

While he technically captained them that was all for show so read absolutely nothing into it.

KIWI RAIDER

Speaking of the Phoenix, they've spent the week in Sydney and that gave Ricki Herbert the chance to take a close look at the midweek game on the Gold Coast. Herbert, who doubles up as the All Whites coach, was keeping an especially close eye on young gun Mitch Cooper, who has played for Australia at under-17 level, but is also eligible to represent New Zealand. With the All Whites World Cup campaign about to kick-off, don't be surprised if Cooper gets a tap on his shoulder. Which way he turns remains to be seen.

Maybe they are just putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5. We play GCU after Sydney, so Ricki was probably having a look at the team play rather than him.

Speaking of possible All Whites in the youth league, is Storm Roux still on the books at the Glory? I know Rufer Junior is at Sydney, I think GCU has another NZ eligible kid in their youth set up. Did the keeper that was trialing with the Heart pick up a youth contract?

The other kiwi is Nexto Vujevich. GCU had another kiwi last year, GK Luke Muir. But now he is playing for Capalaba bulldogs. Is he the keeper that was trialing with the Heart????

Or how about lets give our 17 year old youngsters in NZ a chance, there are plenty in NZ who are just as good if not better than Mitch but are not being given the opportunities here because the Youth set up in this country is rubbish which is why they need to head off overseas to get their experience, the problem here is if your good enough you have to be old enough, all good training with our so called top players but the real experience comes with playing and not just 2 to 20 mnutes here or there when the team is way up,  how long will it be before you see Ricki give a 17 year old out field game time and on saying that a 17 year old in the starting line up, the answer is NEVER, which is another reason why NZ struggle.

How old was Rojas when he got his first start / game?

There aren't too many 17 year olds playing anywhere... physically they simply struggle against senior men. With Cooper, he's also playing at a club where crazy decisions are made every day... including naming him as captain without him having ever played a game at A League level before.

If you had chosen Lindsey as a nexample of youth not being given a chance on the field, you may have had a point!

THE FUTURE

Victory's crop of kids are reasonable but not of the calibre of Central Coast's, Melbourne Heart's or Newcastle's.
Victory's first two signings for next season have been left backs - Adama Traore from Gold Coast and the Mariners Sam Gallagher. Gold Coast teenager Mitch Cooper has been offered a deal, too. Tom Rogic and Ben Halloran have been chased hard but they're likely to rejects Victory's overtures.

How come it says unemployed?? Has he been released by GCU?

Born in Vanuatu, Mitch and his family moved from the small island nation to New Zealand when he was eight years old. In New Zealand, he began playing the game a bit more seriously when he joined his first club at nine. At 13, his family uprooted again and moved to the Sunshine Coast. Mitchs performances there saw him win a scholarship to the Queensland Academy of Sport, where current United Youth Team Coach Mike Mulvey was coaching. His development since then has been rapid to say the least, culminating in selection for the Qantas Joeys in the 2011 FIFA Under 17 World Cup in Mexico. A fine performance against Brazil saw him receive the praise of his peers, picking up the man-of-the-match award. Expect big things from Mitch this year as his star continues to rise.

That would be a fantastic timing to sign him with the phoenix and encourage him to switch allegiance to NZ as he is a young very promising player

Perfect player to get for this finishing school, if not in a youth spot. Already has A-League experience and is eligible for NZ. Why not?

However former Gold Coast United midfielder Mitch Cooper did train with the Brisbane squad, with Vidosic considering offering the talented teenager a contract for next season and beyond.

The Roar's chances of snaring the services of Cooper have improved following Graham Arnold's decision to remain with Central Coast Mariners.

Ex-Gold Coast coach Mike Mulvey was considered a leading candidate for the Mariners job had Arnold switched to Sydney, with Cooper likely to follow Mulvey to the Mariners.

Because all a 17 yr old kid wants to do is leave home and move to another country so they can spend a season doing nothing but train?

I could be the only on here who has this opinion, but wouldn't it be much better if he pledged allegiance to Vanuatu? Oceania football needs to be stronger, and a guy like Mitch Cooper would do a lot for a country like that.

Wouldn't be a good move for him so early in his career I think. He would rule himself out of any chance of playing youth world cups, and possibly make it harder to get a visa to play overseas. Maybe in his mid twenties, if Aussie hasn't called him up, he might consider playing for someone else.

Five players from the Newcastle Jets have been selected to join the Young Socceroos training squad ahead of this year's under-19 Asian Championship.

Coach Paul Okon on Wednesday named his 23-player squad which includes Jets quintet Josh Brillante, Connor Chapman, Mitch Cooper, Adam Taggart and goalkeeper Jack Duncan.

Let him play for Aussie, and then in another year or two when he's really maturing as a player lets steal him.

Aussie football seems to be on a slide at the moment (recent results in general have been arse and youth teams aren't qualifying for anything) whereas we are on the rise.

Dangle a u20 World Cup spot infront of him... and he'll come running, but before he plays in it, select him for a NZ friendly so he's tied in for good. If he says no, drop him from the world cup squad.

Don't know how many players would give up a chance to play at that tournament - its the biggest shop window a young player can get himself into.

Its a pretty decent carrot, and i think i would be safe to assume he'd be better than most NZ midfielders that are under 20.

Worked with getting Winston Reid over the line... (bigger carrot admittedly) and I'm sure it helped with Smith's and McGlinchey's decision as well.

He would make any NZ age group side stronger, get him involved. Best way to do that is to show him he has a more promising future with NZ because he's more likely to be involved in large international comps in front of scouts than playing in Asia, but not qualifying for beforementioned tournaments.

Win win for him and NZ football.

Hmm, I meant your comment about playing him in a full international friendly to lock him in for NZ. It's been repeatedly pointed out here that friendlies aren't enough for this, the player has to play in a competitive A international fixture (i.e. World Cup qualifier, OFC Championship, etc).
